MAIER, Alvena E. (Henning)

Alvena E. Maier, 87, died Monday, March 25, at Graham County Hospital, Hill City.

She was born Nov. 23, 1903, in Gaylord, to John and Amelia (Beckman) Henning. She married John A. Maier Oct. 15, 1929, in Lenora. He died May 13, 1975. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Hill City United Methodist Church and the Millbrook Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include two sons, Walter "Gene," Duncan, Okla., and John, Overland Park; two daughters, Betty Lee Ferrante, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Shirley Ann Smith, Salt Lake City; four sisters, Esther Wilson, and Frieda Sanders, both of El Cajon, Calif., Viola Pilger, Boulder, Colo., and Doris Phipps, Wichita; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren

Services are schedulted for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hill City Methodist Church with the Rev. Kelvin Heitmann officiating; burial in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Hill City. Visiting hours are until 9 p.m. today at Spencer Chapel, Hill city. The family suggests memorials to the Graham County Hospital

McDOWALL, S. D.

Died: --At the home of his daughter Mrs. J. W. Merwin on Rock Creek, S. D. McDowall, aged 84 years and 3 months. He was born at Newton Stewart, Wightonshire, Scotland, February 22, 1812, came ot the U. S. when 12 years old, was married in Decall [sic] county, Ill., July 4, 1836, to Miss D. P. Harris. United with the M.E. church in 1841 of which he has ever since been a member. Seven children survive him.

MENDEL, Clyde Lathrop

Clyde Lathrop Mendel, son of Peter and Dolly Lathrop Mendel, was born September 14, 1881 in Graham County on a farm and passed away March 14, 1975 in Hays, Kansas at the age of 93 years and six months.

Clyde grew to manhood on this parents farm in the North Star Community of Graham County and attended North Star Rural Schools.

On May 29, 1911 at Hill City, Kansas he was united in marriage to Gladys Wagoner. Following their marriage they lived on a farm 8 miles Southeast of Lenora, near the family homestead. In 1942, they moved to Lenora and worked in a hardware store and later purchased the home market and operated it for about 10 years.

Mr. Mendel was a member of the Church of God, in Lenora.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys, of the home; two daughters and their husbands, Mrs. Ivan (Carol) Stephen, Lakewood, Colorado; Mrs. James (Helen) Young, Greenlawn, New York; one son and his wife, Forrest and Maxine Mendel, Lakewood, Colorado; one brother, Ralph Mendel, Breckenridge, Mo.; 5 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, Grace Barott, Edith Michael, and Lucy Culver.

MERWIN, James D.

James D. Merwin, Candidate For Governor Two Years Ago, Is Dead.

Attorney James D. Merwin, who was a candidate for governor of Colorado on the Populist ticket in 1904, died from acute pneumonia at his residence, 1324 Washington Avenue, last evening. Mr. Merwin was taken sick Wednesday afternoon while preparing a case in his office, room 620, Kittredge building, that he intended to argue before the Supreme Court today, and he decided to go home. He went to bed at 5 o'clock and a physician was called, who diagnosed his sickness as pneumonia. Twenty-four hours later the patient died.

Mr. Merwin was unmarried, and leaves a mother and two brothers, who reside at Hilltop [sic], Kan. A sister lives at Pagosa Springs, Colo.

Mr. Merwin came to Denver from his Kansas home twenty years ago, and after amassing a small competence by hard work, entered Boulder University law school, from which he graduated in 1894. He immediately began the practice of his profession in Denver, and had built up a lucrative clientage. He was active in politics, and was regarded as one of the mainstays of the Populist party in this state.

Mr. Merwin was also prominent in fraternal circles, being a member of Boulder Lodge No. 112, Odd Fellows, and Harmony encampment No. 45, Woodmen of the World.

The funeral arrangements will not be perfected until relatives are heard from, but it is expected that interment will be at Hilltop, Kan.

MERWIN, Joseph

Joseph, the little son of Sam Merwin and wife died Dec. 20. He was born Sept. 20, 1907. Death was the result of brain fever. All was done that could be done for the little sufferer but without avail. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Harper and interment made in the Rock Creek cemetery.

MICHAEL, Ross D.

Ross D. Michael, son of Milton Douglas and Edith Mendel Michael, was born near Edmond in Graham County, Kansas, on November 11, 1901, and passed away at the Andbe Home in Norton, Kansas on April 1, 1974, at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 20 days.

Ross was reared on his parents farm in Graham County. He attended the Mt. Vernon rural school. On November 25, 1930 at Norton, Kansas he was united in marriage to Mildred Wilcox. Four children blessed this marriage, all of whom survive.

Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Michael farmed in the area north of Hill City until 1955 when they moved into Hill City. Mr. Michael worked as custodian of the school there until 1968 when they moved to Lenora. On January 11, 1974, he moved to the Andbe Home where he lived until his death. Survivors include his wife Mildred of the home; two sons, LeRoy and his wife, Mary Michael, Denver, Colorado; Larry Michael, Haswell, Colorado; two daughters and their husbands, Shirley and Robert Britt of Norfolk, Virginia; Carol and Raymond Griffey of Norton, Kansas; five grandchildren, Clark Jeffery and Robin Griffey, Michael Ross, and Krista Britt; three brothers, Ivan and Wilbur Michael of Mapleton, Minnesota, and Byron Michael of Alexandria, Nebraska. Other relatives and many friends also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mrs. Elma Ginther and one grandchild, Diane Sue Britt.

MILLER-FRANKLIN, Audra Allen

Audra Allen Miller-Franklin was born at Jennings, Decatur county, Kansas, March 6, 1896; died at the base hospital, Ft. Riley, Kansas October 12th, 1918, age 22 years, 7 months and 6 days.

He was a son of the philanthropist doctor, Henry Miller, and Susan B. Miller, who have both preceded him into the great beyond. His mother died in August, 1897, at Jennings, and his father in 19, at Morland, Kansas. At the age of 18 months Mr. and Mrs. Franklin took him into their home and entwined himself into their hearts, so that they wished him as their own and in 1899 papers of adoption were granted, that welded them together as Father, Mother and son, and that relationship truly existed up to the time that the grim reaper separate record that bound together.

He was married to Miss Pearl Ella Grubb, Feb. 28, 1918 at Lexington, Neb., moved to North Platte the following April. Was called to the colors July 23, 1918, and assigned to Co. 8, 164 Depot Brigade and later was transferred to Co. D., 70th Inf., 10th Div., and was a favorite with the boys in khaki in the companies to which he belonged.

He was stricken with bronchal pneumonia about October 1 and when the symptoms became alarming his people were notified in went to his bedside immediately. The wife and mother remained with him, ministering to his needs, smoothing the pillow of the suffering one, trying his best they could to alleviate the pain and reclaim him back to health. But the preserver of the universe sent his White Winged Messenger and claimed him as his own.

He leaves to mourn his death a stricken wife, father, mother, two brothers, six half-brothers and sisters - Claude Miller, Moorefield Neb; Clifford Miller, hospital 46, Fort Porter, N.Y.; H. L. Miller, Hartford City, Indnext is.; Mrs. Wm. McIntyre, Muncie, Ind.; B. H. Miller, Hartford City; L. N. Hogoboom, Moorefield, Neb.; Mrs. W. Palmer, state of Washington; S. P. Miller, Jennings, Kansas.

The remains arrived from Fort Riley Tuesday night train, accompanied by G. H. Thompson, a member of Audra's company, as escort, and the sad rights were observed Wednesday, October 16, 1918, at 2 p.m., when the remains were laid to rest in Morland cemetery, where live his father and brother. Services were conducted by Rev. Myers of Morland.

The many friends joined the bereaved ones in their power of trial and extend their heartfelt sympathies by a deed and action to show the esteem in which Audra was held, and those who have known him from infancy realize that the bonds of friendship were more closely cemented by the years of constant contact and

MONG, Mary Ann (Fritts)

HILL CITY - Mary Ann Mong, 70, Hill City, died Wednesday, May 3, 2006.

Mrs. Mong was born Mary Ann Fritts on Feb. 16, 1936, in Hill City. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Royce Allen, in 2001.

Survivors include her mother, Grace Fritts, of Hill City; two sons, Bob of Salina and Roger of Loveland, Colo.; a brother, Bob of Hill City; a sister, Betty Clark of Hill City; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stinemetz Funeral Home, 522 N. Pomeroy, Hill City 67642. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Hill City.

Memorials may be made to Dawson Place Nursing Home.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

MORFORD, Tottie Mae (Wilson)

Tottie Mae Morford, daughter of Guy and Frances (Berryman) Wilson, was born April 8, 1906 in Zenda, Kansas and passed Away at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas, at the age of 88 years, 10 months and 15 days.

She grew to womanhood in the Lenora area and attended the North Star Rural Grade School, graduating from the eighth grade. Following graduation she worked at the Lenora Telephone office and at the grocery store. On Sept. 16, 1928 Tottie and Melvin Morford were united in marriage in Norton. They made their home on her parent's farm for 14 years before moving to the farm in Norton County in 1942. In 1955 they moved into Lenora and then to Norton on July 17, 1993.

She was a member of the Lenora United Parish church and Lenora Rebekah Lodge. She was a Past Noble Grand and Past deputy President as well as holding many other offices. She was also a past member of the Lenora EHU and the Ladies Encampment Auxiliary 135 of Phillipsburg.

Survivors include; her husband, Melvin, of the home in Norton; three sons, Francis and his wife, Dorothy Morford, Almena,Kansas; Lloyd and his wife, Charlotte Morford, Hill City, KS; and Edwin Guy Morford, Hutchinson, KS; three sisters-in-law, Loriane Morford, Wichita, KS; Ester Wilson, Elfon, CA; and Ruth Morford, Sharon Springs, KS; 20 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Melva Mae Wilcox; one granddaughter, Faye Lynn Morford; two brothers, William and Wallace Wilson; one sister, Etta Marie Wilcox; one sister-in-law, Thelma Wilson; three brothers-in-law, Harold Morford, W.W."Jiggs" Morford and Jesse Wilcox and one son-in-law, Albert Wilcox.

MOYE, Rosetta "Zettie" Elizabeth (Born)

Rosetta Elizabeth Moye, daughter of Frank and Josie Stanfill Born was born December 2, 1894 on a farm in Graham County, Kansas and passed away at her home in Lenora, Kansas on September 15, 1984 at the age of 89 years, 9 months, and 13 days.

She attended rural grade school in Graham County. She moved to Lenora to attend high school and after high school she taught at Union School. On April 5, 1919, Rosetta and Duey Moye were married at Lenora. They lived all of their married life in the Lenora community. Mr. Moye passed away in 1956.

She was an active member of the Lenora United Parish Church and the Lenora O.E.S. Chapter No. 296.

Survivors include one daughter and her husband, Nelda and Ray Shoemaker, truth or Consequences, New Mexico; one granddaughter and her husband Rose Mary and James Scartaccini, Cliff, New Mexico; one great-granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth Scartaccini; one brother and his wife, Francis and Marie Born, Hill City, Kansas; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters.

MURPHY, Lena B.

Lena Murphy Passes Away

Lena B. Murphy, 84, passed away Wednesday, January 23, at the Dawson place in Hill City. She was a former resident of Morland, and was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, who died in 1950.

Funeral services were held at the Spencer Chapel in Hill city, Friday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Delbert L. Honn of the Hill City United Methodist Church officiating.

Music was furnished by: Robert L. Rath, soloist; and Mrs. James Taber, pianist.

Casket bearers were: Harry Minium, Charley Minium, John Born, R. J. McCauley, John Pratt and Clair Summers. Interment was in the Morland Cemetery, Morland, Kansas.

OBITUARY

Lena B. Murphy, daughter of Dice and Delia Seltzer, was born in Norton County south of Lenora, Kansas, on October 25, 1889; and passed away at Dawson Place in Hill City at the age of 84 years, 2 months, and 23 days. As a child, Lena moved with her parents 3 miles north of Morland on a farm.

On April 1, 1917 she was united in marriage to Ben Murphy. They lived all of their married life in Morland. Mr. Murphy died in May 1950.

She was a member of the Methodist Church and was Past Matron of the Eastern Star. She was honored by receiving her 50 year pin at the Dawson Place.

She was a home loving person, always glad to greet people into her home.

Survivors include her sister: Edith Born and husband, Earl, Lenora; one brother, Charles Seltzer and wife, Zelpha, Lenora; and one nephew, Duane Born and wife, Beulah of Lenora. May God bless her.

Somewhere back of the sunset,
Where loveliness never dies,
She lives in a land of Glory,
'Mid the blue and gold of the skies,
And we, who have known and loved her
Whose passing has brought sad tears,
We'll cherish her memory always,
To brighten the passing years.

NICHOLS, Anna Jane (Stewart)

Anna Jane Nichols, daughter of Thomas and Anna Stewart, was born January 10, 1897 at Donnellson, Iowa; and departed this life at the Graham County Hospital, April 15, 1973, at the age of 75 years.

At the age of three years, she came with her parents to Sheridan county, Kansas, where she attended elementary and secondary schools. She taught four years in the elementary schools in Sheridan county. While a young woman, she became a member of the Presbyterian church of Hoxie, Kansas.

On August 28, 1921 she was united in marriage To Joseph M. Nichols of Hoxie, Kansas; and to this union two children were born: Peggy Gregory of Salina, Kansas and William Jak Nichols of Areata, Calif.

She and her husband moved to Morland in 1922, where they owned and operated a hardware and furniture store until their retirement in 1964. She was a very devoted wife and mother, and the welfare of her home was of the greatest importance.

1973 marks her fiftieth year as a member of Chapter 400 of the Order of Eastern Star of Morland, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband on February 28, 1973.

She is survived by her daughter, Peggy, and her husband Vane Gregory; and son Jack and his wife, Nadyne; one sister, Mabel Guffey of Twin Falls, Idaho; one brother, William Stewart of Hoxie; one grandson, on granddaughter and two great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist church, Morland, Kansas on Wednesday afternoon, April 18, 1973 with Rev. Delbert Honn and Rev. Allen Musbach officiating.

Music was furnished by Catherine Taber and Robert Rath, accompanied by Bernadine Huepel, organist. Casket bearers were: Ben Birney, Cecil King, Albert Richmeier, Chester Goodrow, Pete Minium and Jerrold Cochran.

Honorary casket bearers were: Albert Kobler, Dr. Carl Kobler, John Sullivan, John Born, Carl Goodrow, A. T. Sanger, Robert Rawson and Hessel Moore.

Graveside services were conducted by Order of Eastern Star, Morland Chapter NO. 400. Burial was at Hoxie, Kansas. Mickey Chapel in charge.

NICHOLS, Joseph Marion

Joseph Marion Nichols, son of Martha and William was born August 4, 1896 at Kansas City, Missouri, and passed away at the Graham County Hospital in Hill City, Wednesday morning, February 28, 1973 at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 24 days. The family moved to Hoxie, Kansas in the year of 1899.

On August 28, 1921 he was united in marriage to Anna Jane Stewart, and to this union one son and one daughter were born.

In 1912 he and his wife Jane moved to Morland where they opened a furniture store and later a hardware store. After serving their community in this capacity for 42 years, they retired from business in 1964.

He was a good husband and father, and a man with many friends. He liked to hunt and fish during his earlier years, but always remained an avid baseball fan. He was a veteran of World War I, and a member of the Morland Masonic Lodge.

His parents and 3 brothers preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Jane; one daughter, Mrs. Vane (Peggy) Gregory of Salina, Kansas; one son, Jack and his wife Nadyne of Areata, California; one sister, Mina Waite of St. Helena, California; one brother, Bill of Morland; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Orville Guffey of Twin Falls, Idaho; one brother-in-law, William Stewart of Hoxie; 2 grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

The funeral service was held in Morland at the United Methodist Church on Saturday afternoon, March 3, with Rev. Allen Musbach of the Assembly of God Church officiating. Burial was in Hoxie, Kansas, with the Masonic lodge in charge. Music for the service was provded by Mrs. James Taber and Bob Rath, with Mrs. Grenadine Keith as accompanist.

Casket bearers were: Leonard Paxson, Lawrence Bell, Gerald Bell, Frank Bretz, Jr., Ivan Parker and Charles Minium. Honorary bearers were: Albert Kobler, Carl Kobler, Harry Minium, Bob White, Sr., Oscar Brown, Newell Boss, Clayton Hedge, Henry ALbetson, Albert Richmeier, and Ivan Miles.

Mickey Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

NOLAND, Edith May (Beezley)

Obituary - Edith May Noland was barn [sic] in Harlan county, Nebraska, March 21, 1887, died November 29, 1918, age 31 years, 8 months and 7 days.

She was married to Malcolm Dayton Noland and to this union were born three children: Beryl and Ruby and their first born who was buried in Wallace county, Kansas.

She was converted several years ago and was always active in Christian work.

She leaves to mourn her loss a father, James Beezley, of Lenora; five sisters, Mrs. Herman Niehaus, Rosa and Daisy Beezley of Yuma, Colorado; Mrs.Orien Lewis, of McAllaster, Kansas; Mrs. John McClannahan, of Sylvan Grove, and one brother, Leslie Beezley who is now in France decides a host of friends.

Her mother and one sister having gone on before.

NOLAND, Malcolm David

Molcolm [sic] Dayton Noland was born in Graham county, Kansas, May 3, 1887, and died December 1, 1918, aged 31 years, 6 months and 28 days.

He was married to Edith May Beezley and to this union was born three children.

He leaves to mourn his loss, too small girls, Beryl and Ruby, a father and mother of Hayes, Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Cain, of Morland, and Gladys Noland of Hayes, besides a host of friends.

Rev. Dull conducted the funeral services of the above and the remains of the husband and wife were laid to rest in the South star cemetery.

PERKINS, Elsie Mae

Elsie Mae Perkins, 86, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, [1991] at Graham County Hospital.

She was born Jan. 5, 1905, in Mitchell County, to Peter and Florence Martin Wright. She married Thomas E. Perkins Dec. 24, 1923 in Stockton, Kansas. He died Feb. 12, 1973. She was a homemaker and farmer. She was a member of the Pollyann Club and a longtime area resident.

Survivors include three sons, Sheridan H. and Alvin G. both of Augusta, and Sherral C. Lenora; a daughter, Bonnie Teter, Augusta; a sister, Elzadia Crider, Horton; 23 grandchildren, 34 great- grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carmond Edgington. Services were 1 p.m. Friday at Spencer Chapel with the Rev. Kelvin Heitmann officiating; burial in South Star Cemetery, rural Graham County.

PERKINS, Thomas E.

Thomas E. Perkins, 75, Penokee, passed away Monday morning, February 12, [1973] at his farm home north of Penokee, of an apparent heart attack. He had lived on the same farm all of his married life. He was born September 28, 1897 in Kirwin, Kansas.

Funeral services will be today, Thursday, February 15, at 1 p.m. at the Spencer Chapel in Hill City with the Rev. Delbert L. Honn of the Graham County United Methodist Parish officiating.

Casketbearers will be: Sherdian H., Sherral C., Alvin G., and Sherdian E. Perkins, and Clifford E., Dennis L. and Marvin B. Edgington. Interment will be in the South Star Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Mae, of the home; three sons, Sherdian H. of Wichita; Sherral C., of Penokee; and Alvin G., Augusta; 2 daughters: Mrs. Carmond Edgington, Wichita; and Mrs. Bonnie Teter, Billings, Montana; 22 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are 3 sisters; Oletha Cary, Ft. Lipton, Colorado: Myrtle Bennett, Kirwin; and Alice Johnson,Phillipsburg. and one sister-in-law Mrs. Maude Perkins, Beverly.

PERSONETT, Orville

Orville Personett son of John and Jane Craig Personett was born February 24, 1884 at Republic County, Kansas and passed away at the Norton County Hospital November 3, 1976 at the age of 92 years, 8 months and 9 days. Orville grew to manhood in Graham and Norton counties and attended Graham County schools. On May 1, 1906, Orville and Ida M. Larson were united in marriage in Hill City, Kansas. They made their home in Graham county until 1930 when they moved to Lenora. Orville greatly enjoyed fishing and was a good carpenter. Survivors include: one brother, John E. Personett, Belfair, Washington; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Cleland, Glendora, Calif., Mrs. Millie Delp, Tuscon, Arizona; one nephew, Earl and his wife Winnie Personett, Lenora, Kansas; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers, Charles, James, Grover, three sisters, Lena, Addie and May.

Note: Burial was in Lenora South Cemetery.
