SMITH, Elsie May

Elsie May Smith, daughter of Scott and Nettie Smith, was born at Morland, Kansas, June 23d, 1896, died at the home of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Norton, Pulaski, New York, October 13, 1918 age 22 years, 3 months and 21 days.

Her mother died about 13 years ago and for a number of years she made her home with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Baird. One brother preceded her in death about a year ago. During her four years of student life at the Kansas State Normal School at Hays, she made her home with Mr. and Mrs. George Bellman to whom she became a daughter beloved.

Those who remained to lament her departure are her father, Scott Smith, one brother, James, who is in France with the American army; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Baird, who cared for her through her girlhood days, and other relatives and friends not a few.

The deceased was converted and having confessed her faith in the Lord Jesus was received into the Trinity Lutheran church at Hays, Kansas March 31, 1918. She was also a member of the order Rebeka at hays.

She was a talented young woman, a natural elocutionist, brilliant and vivacious. We quote a sketch from the Ellis County News concerning her departure to New York to teach:

"By this time Miss Elsie May Smith, who for several years has made her home with Mrs. George Bellman, has reached New York state where she will teach school during the ensuing year. Elsie has always lived in the short grass region and New York with its Knickerbocker history and tradition will no doubt have many new things to teach her, but we are sure she will have new and wholesome ideas to hand out to the kids of the empire state. Miss Smith is typical of the many people who come here, work their way through school and go out to help do the big work of the world."

But all plans do not mature to our earthly satisfaction and two months after she left for New York her body was back for burial. God's ways are not always easily understood, but while His eye is on the sparrow not one of his little ones will be forgotten.

The services were conducted by Rev. R. C. Myers of Morland at the Anderson Cemetery where interment was made. No other service was held because of the influenza epidemic which is sweeping the country and was the cause of Miss Smith's death.
