TEBO, Lorene (Depew)

Funeral services for Lorene Tebo, 92, Lyons, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hill City United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Aaron Madondo officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Hill City.

Mrs. Tebo died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at Lyons Good Samaritan Center in Lyons.

She was born March 21, 1916, in Hill City, the daughter of Jerry David and Cora Sanford Depew. She was a former longtime resident of Hill City.

Mrs. Tebo was a homemaker and women's clothier. She was a member of Hill City United Methodist Church.

She married John Tebo on July 23, 1933, in Morland. He died Jan. 26, 1977.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, John David; four brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include three sons, Ronald L. Tebo, Lawrence, Stephen B. Tebo, Boulder, Colo., and Kent W. Tebo, Bennington; a daughter, Linda Sunley, Lyons; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

TEEL, Wilma (Fox)

Wilma Teel. 89, Hays, died Saturday, March 17, 2007, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 23, 1917, at Graham County to Elmer and Barbara (Keith) Fox.

She married Francis A. Teel on June 12, 1943, in Knoxville, Tenn. He preceded her in death January 1982. She was school teacher, a farmer's wife, and owned and operated Wilma's Antiques.

She was a member of the Westview Church and the Sunflower Club.

Survivors include two sons, Glen Teel, and Fred Teel and wife, Beverly, all of Hays; a daughter, Marietta Cummings and husband, Ron, Hays; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Sanger, Charlotte Galloup, Barbara "Okie" Shoemaker, and Laura Kemper.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Westview Church, Hays; graveside services will be at 3 p.m. at Morland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine, Hays, and after 10:30 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Westview Church in care of the funeral home.

THOMAS, Ralph Lavel

Ralph L. Thomas, 91, Bogue, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Dawson Place Nursing Home, Hill City. He was born March 29, 1913, in rural Palco to Herbert L. and Elsie Lulu (Gish) Thomas.

He married Harriett F. Hoyt on June 9, 1934, in Stockton. He was a farmer-stockman.

Survivors include his wife, Bogue; a daughter, Barbara Vanderhoff, Tempe, Ariz.; a brother, Doyle Thomas, Bogue; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Spencer-Stinemetz Chapel, Hill City; burial in Morlan Township Cemetery, rural Bogue.

No visitation is planned. Memorials are suggested to Dawson Place Nursing Home.

THOMPSON, Bertie (Hodge)

Bertie Thompson, Lenora died Feb. 15, 1993 at the Norton County Hospital at the age of 96.

She was born Jan. 16, 1897, in a sod house in northwest Graham county, the daughter of Samuel and Lucy Theodate Bangle Hodge. She grew to womanhood in that community and attended the Happy Home Country School. She was married to Arthur Williard Thompson on May 7, 1924, at Norton,Ks. They farmed in Graham county before moving to Norton county in the early 1930's where theyi made their home in the Lenora area. Although they had no children of their own, she helped her sisters care for their children. For several years they kept and cared for the Day children after the death of their mother. Mr. Thompson died July 3, 1953.

Survivors include one sister, Vera Jones, Lenora; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Martha "Mattie" Edgington, Sara "Sadie" Williams ( Mrs. Grover Williams ) and Nellie Carpenter.

Casket bearers were; Jim Mai, Jim Williams, Bernard Lemon, Allan Carpenter, Norman Albright ( husband of Betty Williams ) Maurice Williams.

The concluding service and interment were held in the Lenora South Cemetery.

TOLL, Elsie Celestia (Edwards)

Elsie Celestia Edwards, daughter of Mary Margaret and Joseph Edwards, was born in a farm near Lenora, Kansas on December 4, 1888. Here this pioneer family, who had come to Kansas from Ohio, lived in a sod house, tilling the soil and contending with the elements of nature.

At an early age, Elsie became a Christian and continued to follow in "The Way."

On December 11, 1905 she was united in marriage to Joseph Toll. This couple established their home on a farm, 8 1/2 miles north of Morland, Kansas in the Graden Community, where they lived out their full life. She was a member of the O.E.S. Chapter 400, morland, Kansas and served as Worthy Matron.

To this union were born: 5 daughters and 1 son--Lottie O., Zelda L., Carol L., Nina Fern, Richard D., and Betty Jo, all of whom survive. Besides the six children, she leaves to mourn her passing 6 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband "Joe" who passed away on June 24, 1952. She was the last of the Edwards family.

Mrs. Toll continued to live on the farm with her daughter, Carol and husband, Bill Dugan; where they shared intersts. Becoming ill in May 1969, she only partially regained her health.

TOLL, Lee Elmer

Lee Elmer Toll died suddenly Tuesday morning, November 5th, 1968 at the age of 47 years, 7 months and 28 days.

He was born to Harry E. and Mattie (Crowder) Toll on March 9th, 1921, near Morland, Kansas. He was baptised and joined the Church of God at an early age.

He spent his entire life in and around Morland, except the time he spent for his Country in the Armed Forces as an Automotive mechanic. He served from July 20th, 1942 to October 6th, 1945. Most of this time was spent in the European Theater of World War II. He attended Graham County schools and graduated from Morland Rural High School in 1939.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Ellen Keith on January 22nd, 1949. To this union were born three children, Sandra, Judy and Karl.

He was a kind and loving husband and father.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Marjorie; children, Sandra, Judy and Karl of the home; his parents, Harry and Mattie Toll; four brothers, Jack, Alan and Glenn of Morland and Wilbur of Saline, and a host of other relatives and friends. He will be sadly missed by all.

TOLL, Marjorie Ellen (Keith)

Marjorie Ellen Toll, 79, WaKeeney, formerly of Morland, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at Lutheran Home, Wakeeney.

She was born March 2, 1926, near Penokee to Charles Lester and Lenna Elizabeth (Green) Keith.

She married Lee Elmer Toll Jan. 22, 1949, in Hill City. He preceded her in death Nov. 5, 1968. She had been a bookkeeper.

Survivors include two daughters, two brothers, three sisters, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Morland United Methodist Church; burial in Morland City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Stinemetz Funeral Home, Hill City.

Memorials are suggested to Lutheran Home, WaKeeney.

TOLL, Mattie May (Crowder)

"Mattie Toll Passes Away" Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 12, for Mrs. Mattie May Toll, 84, who passed away Saturday at the Trego-Lemke Hospital in WaKeeney.

Mrs. Toll is a member of the Methodist Church, and was born May 1, 1889, in Sumner County, Kansas.

Officiating at the services at the Methodist Church in Morland at 2:00 p.m. was Rev. Allen Musbach of the Morland Assembly of God Church. Music was furnished by a duet of Misses Virginia Toll and Relda Anderson with Mrs. Fred Keith at the organ.

Casket bearers were: Ray, Alan W., Lloyd, Dale, Otis, Todd, Carl and Nathan Toll. Interment was in the Morland Cemetery and arrangements were by the Spencer Chapel.

Survivors include: her husband, Harry, of the home; four sons, Jack, Alan and Glenn, all of Morland; and Wilbur of Salina. Also surviving are: 21 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

TREMBLAY, Dorothy D. (Harris)

Dorothy D. Tremblay, 81, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006, at Dawson Place Nusing Home, Hill City.

She was born Aug. 29, 1925, in rural Graham County, to Osborne M. and Cora Ellen (Swisher) Harris.

She married Adrian A. Tremblay on Nov. 17, 1945, in Los Angeles. He preceded her in death June 2, 2002. She was a homemaker and clerk.

Survivors include a son, Leland Tremblay, Hill City; two daughters, Adrenne Bell and Carol Nickelson, both of Hill City, and Marcella Brin, Great Bend; two brothers, Sylvan Harris, Courtland, and Eldon Harris, Florida; 12 grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hill City; burial in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Hill City.

There will be a Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m. today at the church.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Stinemetz Funeral Home, Hill City, and from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested for Masses or to Dawson Place Nursing Home, Hill City.

TURNER, Ruby Elizabeth (Carson)

Ruby Elizabeth Turner, daughter of Thomas and Kathryn Mallory Carson was born January 8, 1905 at Pattonsburg, Missouri and passed away at the Graham County Hospital in Hill City, Kansas on March 8, 1983 at the age of 78 years and 2 months.

She moved with her family to Graham County when she was 2 years old. She attended the South Star and graduated from the Union Rural Grade Schools and also from the Lenora High School in 1924. She enrolled in teaching correspondence course in 1939 to up date her teaching certificate so she could continue teaching. She taught rural grade school in Graham County for 16 years. On May 4, 1940 she married Kanie R. Turner at Atwood, Kansas. Following their marriage they lived for 9 years in Graham County and in 1949 they moved to their farm home two miles west of Lenora where they had resided since.

She was baptized in the Lenora Church of God and was a member of the Ladies Missionary Society. Her family and the church were always her love and interest.

Survivors include her husband, Kanie, of the home; two sons and their wives Don and Helen Paden, Oakesdale, Washington and Paul and Pat Turner, Quinter, Kansas; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six nieces; five nephews; other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Edgar and Bruce.

TURNER, S. G.

Died Saturday January 27th at his home in Solomon township, S. G. Turner in his 75th year. The funeral services were conducted from the residence by Elder J. H. Conner of this city and the remains were laid to rest in the family graveyard [Brush Creek Cemetery]. He had been afflicted with dropsy for several years and suffered intensely before the end came. The relatives of the deceased have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.

Mr. Turner was one of the oldest settlers in the ocunty and leaves a large circle of acquaintances.

TURNER, Willie

Died, on Monday, April 12, a little son of Harrison Turner, of Brush creek, aged about three years. The little fellow was well in the morning but was attacked with membranous croup and died before night.

Willie, son of Harrison and Mary Turner of Brush creek, died on the night of the twelfth inst. of spasmo-ic croup. Little Willie was two years and eight months old at the time of his death and was a child of rare promise whose bright and interesting ways shed a ray of sunshine wherever he went and made him a general favorite with all who knew him. His bereaved parents have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad affliction.

URQUHART, Alexander Duncan

A. D. Urquhart died at Lenora Kansas August 29, 1895 of a complication of diseases. Aged 66 years, 4 months, and 4 days. Mr. Urquhart was born in Scioto Co., Ohio April 25, 1830. When the war broke out, he joined Co., B 173rd Ohio Infantry and remained in the service until the close of the war. After the close of the war, Mr. Urquhart along with his family moved to and settled in Sheridan County in 1878 since which time he has resided here until a few months ago when he went to live with his daughter, Mrs. Geo. Tatum, in Graham County. During his dresidence in this county, Mr. Urquhart was considered one of our best citizens and was honored by all. He was at one time postmaster at Kenneth and afterwards elected county attorney. He was also a member of McDowell Post No. 290 G.A.R. of Hoxie. He was buried in the Anderson Cemetery August 30, 1895.

VESPER, Harold Arthur

Harold Arthur Vesper, a lifelong Graham County farmer and stockman, passed away Saturday, October 27, 1973, at his home in Hill City, Kansas.

Born October 13, 1897 on a farm nine miles southeast of Hill City, Harold was the oldest of five children born to Alfred and Minnie (Bundy) Vesper.

On March 1, 1921, he was married to Gertrude Price and one son, Donald Robert, was born to this union. Harold later married Oda Gray Moore.

Active in community and county affairs, Mr. Vesper served as a member of the Kansas Legislature during the years of 1949 and 1950. He also served as Clerk of his local school board and as a member of the high school board from 1941-1945, and had also been president of the Graham County Farm Bureau and was chairman of the ASC County Committee during 1947 and 1948. Harold also served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Land Bank.

A 32nd degree Mason, Harold was a member of Millbrook Lodge #281 at Hill City, the South Solomon Shrine Club, the Isis Temple at Salina and the Wichita Consistory.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Oda, of Dawson Place in Hill City, include his son, Don; his daughter-in-law, Ethel; and two grandchildren, Tina Marie and Patrick Layton Vesper, all of Columbia, Missouri. Other survivors include a brother, Claude, of Hill City; and two sisters, Blanche Strunk of Abilene and Evelyn Denny of Wichita.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, October 30, at 2:00 p.m. at Spencer Chapel in Hill City. Officiating was Reverend Delbert Honn of the Hill City United Methodist Church.

Interment was in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery with Warren Boss, E. P. Fabricius, Leon Fink, R. A. Lindley, Willis Brandyberry and Leon Super serving as casket bearers.
