FRANK KINCAID LOSES PROPERTY IN PRAIRIE FIRE
Frank Kincaid, of Gray county, recently lost considerable property as the result of a prairie fire started by a Santa Fe engine. He settled for $225, receipting in full, and was somewhat surprised a few days later to receive an additional $100, the company amount was hardly a fair settlement. (Fair Play, May 13, 1898, page 2)

The farmers are busy planting spring crops.
We were favored with a good rain this week.
Misses Edna and Georgia Walker of Hugoton, visited at the Elliott home this week.
The program given at the school house Saturday evening was well attended.
V. D. People's is rigging up the steam plow in preparation for the spring work.
H. E. Elliott of Garden City, visited with home folks the past few days.
Jethro Peoples is planting an extensive garden this spring. Besides planting twenty bushels of onion sets, he has planted other vegetables in proportion.
Miss Fannie Washington who has been teaching school the past eight months, left for her home near Kenstone, Kansas this week.
Mrs. Hugh Elliott has been on the sick list for the past few days, but is better at this writing.
James Walker and Wm. and Jesse Robinson visited the Elliott home a few days this week enroute to their home in Stevens county. (Plainsdealer, May 8, 1914, page 4)

Crops and gardens are looking fine after the big rain.
Robert Elliott returned home from his claim in Stanton county, Kansas Saturday, May 2.
The surprise party given on Miss Fannie Washington was well attended. All report a fine time.
Miss Edna Walker passed through Montezuma Thursday, on her way to Great Bend.
Jethro Peoples finished setting out onions Friday.
Mr. Wiley Smith passed through the city last week.
It is understood that Miss Georgia Walker will teach the Shaw School the next coming term. (Plainsdealer, May 22, 1914, page 1)

Harvesting will begin Monday the 22nd and reports are that this is going to be the biggest wheat crop ever known in this country.
Mr. and Mrs. Peoples of Arlington visited relatives Sunday.
A. J. Elliott drove to Meade Saturday.
The Children's Day program was well rendered.
King and her little daughter from Meade attended the Children's Day program.
Mr. Lucas of Garden City is down looking after his wheat crop.
Mrs. Givens and Mrs. Williams of Mead visited friends in this vicinity a few days last week.

The weather is fine but rain is needed.
Mrs. J. W. Thomas and son, Clifford of Turon, visited relatives a few days in Geary county, and also attended the picnic.
Mrs. A. J. Elliott and daughter Edith, made a business trip to Meade Friday.
The party given on Miss Jennie and Syble Lucas at V. D. People's was very delightful and all enjoyed a fine time.
Thomas Brown who has been ill is somewhat improved.
Jethro Peoples took a day off and went fishing last week. He thinks fishing beats farming.
Mr. and Mrs. Carter are thinking of moving to Lawrence soon. Their many friends hate to see them leave.
Miss Jessie and Syble Lucas returned to their home in Garden City Wednesday.
Mrs. Hugh Elliott called on Mrs. Williams while in Meade Saturday.

Jethro Peoples has been quilt ill but at this writing is much better.
Mr. U. D. Peoples is heading fetereta this week.
A. J. Elliott is cutting alfalfa weed this week.
It is reported that Mrs. White of Mead is sick with typhoid fever.
Thomas Brown, one of our wealthy bachelors has commenced to erect a fine house.
Chester Elliott and Arthur Seward are thinking of going west to take up claims. (Plainsdealer, October 23, 1914, page 1)
MRS L. WHITMAN VISITING
Mrs. L. Whitman of Springfield, Ohio, stopped off Tuesday and Wednesday with her cousin, Mr. and Mrs. Horace Garvin, 815 Everett avenue, enroute to visit at the home of her daughter at Montezuma, Kansas. Mrs. Whitman is the widow of Rev. Whitman who was pastor some years ago of First A. M. E. church, when it was at Seventh street and Ann avenue. (Advocate, August 13, 1920, page 1)

Great preparations are being made for the grand dinner and program June 14th.
Robert Whitman of Pratt, will spend the summer with friends in Green county.
V. D. Peoples purchased a fine automobile last week.
Hugh E. Elliott was in Cimmarron on business Monday.
A large crowd attended church Sunday.

Elder E. L. Jackson, wife and helpers of Denver, Colo., spent Sunday with us in our Children's and Father's Day Service.
Elder Jackson is enroute to New York City by way of Omaha and Iowa
The basket dinner and program was really enjoyed by all. A large number of visitors and friends were present from Garden City, Dodge City and Hugoton.
A rain and hail hit Montezuma last week, doing considerable damage.
Mr. Harry Thompson says, the hail of last week almost cleaned his wheat but most of it was protected by insurance. (Plaindealer, June 20, 1930, page 4)
