MR. FORREST W. "BUCK" BUNYARD

Forrest William "Buck" Bunyard, age 84, a resident of rural Severy, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009 at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in
Eureka. Buck was born on Aug. 4, 1925 in Fall River, the son Harvey Samuel and Viola Bell (Cornett) Bunyard.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. On April 3, 1948 he was united in marriage to Marjorie M. Binns in Fredonia.

Buck worked for Beech Aircraft for 24 years as an Assembly Supervisor. Buck was a member of the Severy Baptist Church. Other memberships included the Odd Fellows and the American Legion. He enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, watching baseball, football and mud runs, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Buck is survived by one son Rick Bunyard and his wife Sherrie of Severy, two daughters Kathy Kraft and her husband David of Severy, Linda Ledford and her husband Marvin of Golden, Mo., one brother Paul Bunyard of Eureka, one sister Ruby Roberts of Severy, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded In death by his parents, his wife Marjorle on April 28, 2001. five brothers George, Bob, Bill Lee and David, and three sisters Virginia Hemry, Mary Burt and Bettle Riggs.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 18, 2009 at the Severy Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Pameticky officiating. Interment followed at South Lawn Cemetery.

SCHOUTEN, SHARON LOUISE

Sharon Louise Schouten of Piedmont, died on Friday, Oct. 17, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita, at the age of 61.

She was born on January 5, 1947 in Winfield, the daughter of Louis Conard and Grace Marie (Griffith) Sharp. She was raised in the Howard area and graduated from local schools. After high school, she attended college in Coffeyville.

On July 9, 1966, Sharon was united in marriage to Lee Schouten in Howard.

After Lee returned from the service, they made their home farming in Piedmont and Sharon worked as a paraprofessional in the Eureka school district. She was an avid seamstress and quilter.

Sharon was a member of the First Baptist church.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Lee of the home; three sons, Ashley Schouten of Piedmont; John Schouten of Fall River, and Ryan Schouten of Piedmont; one daughter, Star Troyer of Norwich; three brothers, Richard Noakes of Wichita; Martin Sharp of Wichita; and Robert Sharp of Severy; and five sisters, Joan Karsting of Smith center; Connie Shipman of Marion; Myrna Leckliter of Herington; Linda Loebeck of Augusta; and Judy Schouten of Leon. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct 21, at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka with Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist church officiating. DOUD, MARION E.

M. E. Doud Dead

Americus Greeting: A letter received by his mother on Friday last conveys the sad news of the death of Marion E Doud, of Promise, Ore., on April 26. His death resulted from a bruise he received while getting out sills for an addition to his residence. Proud flesh formed and when the doctor trimmed it he was getting so much better that it was thought all serious consequences were past, but blood poison set in, causing his death. Mr. Doud was born June 1, 1878, in Greenwood county, Kansas, and moved to Americus with his parents in early boyhood. Most of his life was spent in Americus. He moved to his new home in Oregon in 1905, and was getting along nicely in his new location. He was well known and had many friends in Americus who extend their sympathies to the bereaved relatives. He leaves a wife, three children, a mother, one brother, one sister and relatives at Topeka, Welda, Eureka and other points in Kansas. [Emporia Gazette, 11 May 1906 - Sub. by K.T.]

PHENIS, EMILY GARDNER

A Kansas Pioneer Dead.

Mrs. Emily Gardner Phenis, widow of the late Judge Isaac R. Phenis, was buried at Eureka Monday. Her death occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. B. Draper, in Oswego, Kan. She was 82 years old. Mr. Phenis was a pioneer in Kansas. Mrs. Phenis came with her husband and family to Eureka in 1868. She is survived by two sons and two daughters, and several grandchildren. Mrs. Phenis was known to many Emporia people. Her son Albert Phenis, lived here and learned the newspaper business on the old Emporia News. [Emporia Gazette, 21 Aug 1906 - Sub. by K.T.]

TAYLOR, BUSHROD J.

Bushrod J. Taylor was born in Londoun county, Virginia, on May 19, 1846, and passed from this life at his home a few miles west of Fall River, Kansas, on Thursday, May 3, 1917, at the age of 70 years, 11 months, and 14 days. He has been in failing health for more than a year, and almost helpless for about six months with paralysis.

He was married in 1871 to Sallie Thrasher, and to this union were born ten children, three having died in infancy, and seven --Mrs. Jessie Foster of Sapulpa, Okla., Mrs. Rhoda Marion of Howard, Kansas, Mrs. Mamie Draper of Benkelman, Nebr,; Mrs. Ella Boice of Great Falls, Mont., and Miss Lizzie, Wallace and Luther who are at home, are left with the mother to mourn the loss of a loving father. He also leaves two sisters and two brothers who live in Virginia.

Early in life the subject of this sketch was converted and united with the Methodist church. In 1889 with his family he moved to Kansas and has spent the most of this time living near Fall River.

Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. S.F. Ditto, pastor of the M. E. church of this place, and interment was made in Brown chapel. ----Fall River Star. (Browns Chapel Cemetery) (Howard Courant, May 17, 1917, submitted by Kyle M. Condon)

LOOMIS, LUCILLE

EUREKA SERVICES SET FOR TEACHER, LUCILLE LOOMIS

Eureka, Kan., - Services for Mrs. Lucille Loomis, 57, of Eureka, who died Friday, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Eureka Methodist Church.

Mrs. Loomis a school teacher, had taught elementary school here since 1954, and taught in Greenwood County 27 years.

The widow of Alvin Loomis, she was born Aug. 20, 1907 at Lamar, Mo. She was a member of the Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, Kansas State Teachers Association and the Business and Professional Women's Club.

Survivors include two brothers, Jess I. Millard, Eureka, and Raymond E. Millard, Wichita. (The Wichita Eagle, Sunday, January 17, 1965)

CROSS, JAMES RUFUS

J.R. (Sam) Cross Is Taken In Death

James Rufus (Sam) Cross, 54, succumbed with shocking suddenness at his home, 121 North School street, at 5:30 a.m Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Cross moved to that address only two weeks ago when Mr. Cross was released from St. Francis hospital in Wichita.

Mr. Cross was the successful candidate for the office of county clerk in the November election. Serious illness intervened, however, and he was unable to accept formally the responsibilities of the office.

The funeral service to be conducted by Reverend R.F. Schaechtele, will be held at the Baird Funeral Home on Saturday, February 16, at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be in South Lawn Cemetery at Severy.

James Rufus Cross was born at Climax on September 13, 1908. He was a son of James Page Cross and Grace Snider Cross. He had lived all of his life in Greenwood county, and was a successful farmer and stockman in the Climax community. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Climax.

Surviving are his wife Fern, of the home; two children, Sammie Gene Cross of Climax and Mrs. Tom (Donna) Masterson of Piedmont; five grandchildren; two brothers, Dale Cross of Hamilton and Sidney Cross of Wenatchee, Washington; and one sister, Mrs. Bea Bell of Cherryvale. ROWE, CHARLES GORDON

Charles Gordon Rowe, 93, formerly of Caney, died Tuesday, Juno 29, 2010, at Greenwood County Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 2, 2 p.m. at Koup Family Funeral Home in Eureka. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka. Memorials have been established for Greenwood County Hospital or Meals on Wheels of Eureka and may be sent to the funeral home at P.O. Box, 595, Eureka, KS 67045.
