Rayond E. Anderson, 87, of Modesto, Calif., died
Saturday, December 2, 2006 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, Calif.
He was born March 1, 1919 at Virgil, the son of
Arthur and Ellen Berthot Anderson.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Griffin, of
Oakdale, Calif., two sons, Bill of Modesto, Calif., and Steve of Ceres; two sisters, Bettie Sauber, of Hutchinson
and Catherine Hammeke, of Ellinwood; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral mass was held on December 7, at Colonial
Chapel, with interment following in Lakewood Memorial Park.

Barbara L. Bailey, 86, of Eureka, died Friday,
January 12, 2007 at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.
She was born on October 12, 1920, in Severy, the
daughter of Harold Ray and Jessie Irene (Laughlin) Lawman.
She is survived by two sons, Tony Bailey of Farmington,
N.M., and Steve Bailey of Eureka; two daughters, Diane Grundy of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jill Bailey of Eureka,
nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and one brother, Rex Lawman of Little Rock, Ark.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday,
January 18 at Koup Family Funeral Home in Eureka, with Pastor Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church
officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in her name to

Omer Eugene "Buck" Chitwood, Jr., resident
of rural Ramona, died at 1:53 a.m. on Friday at his risdence.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 11,
in the First Baptist Church in Ochelata with Reverend Kenton White officiating. Interment was in the Nowata Memorial
Park Cemetery with full military honors by the Fisk-Leffler Post 334 American Legion, Ramona, Okla., directed by
the Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.
A memorial has been established with the Cornerstone
Hospice, 3414 SE Kentucky, Bartlesville, OK 74006, for those who wish to donate in this memory.
He was born on April 27, 1944, to Grace Buttman
Chitwood Givens. He was raised and educated in Ochelata.

Delia V. Clark, 89, of Eureka, died December 14,
2006, at Medicalodge in Eureka.
She was born on July 8, 1917, in Drumright, Okla.,
the daughter of Edward and Lou (Stockwell) Rogers.
She is survived by a son, Ernest Clark of Phoenix,
Ariz., a sister, Helen Rogers of Denver, Colo., sister-in-law, Joanna Bradburry of Eureka and four grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, December
20, at the Koup Family Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Clark officiating. Cremation has been effected. Inurnment
followed at Virgil Cemetery, Virgil.

RAY
Russell Ray Curnutt, 55, of Eureka, died Sunday,
December 17, 2006 losing his battle with cancer.
Ray was born in Eureka on February 6, 1951, the
son of Russell "Tiny" and Harriett (Lewis) Curnutt.
He worked as a mechanic, a truck driver, and an
oil field hand. He found pleasure in hunting and fishing.
Ray is survived by his mother; three brothers,
Charles Curnutt, Robert Curnutt, and Kenneth Curnutt, all of Eureka; one sister, Terri Mitchell of Eureka, four
nephews, four nieces, seven great-nephews and eight great-nieces.
Cremation has been effected. No services will be
held. Ray's family members plan to hold a private remembrance and celebration of his life. (The Eureka Herald,

Bob G. Farrar, 80, of Reading, died Tuesday, January
9, 2007 at Newman Hospital in Emporia.
He was born June 3, 1926, near Shidler, Okla.,
the son of Charles Arthur and Beulah Bell Tennis Farrar.
He is survived by his wife, of the home, two daughters,
Carey Oliver of Osawatomie and Nancy Free of Red Oak, Iowa; a son, Jim Farrar of Westphalia; four grandchildren

Milifred "Red" Lester LeRoy Frazier,
78, of Valley Center, died Sunday, December 10, 2006 at Newton Medical Center, Newton.
He was born December 11, 1927, in Anthony, the
son of Lonnie Frazier and Maude Irene Gaither.
He is survived four sons, Stan Frazier of Eureka,
Roy Frazier and randy Frazier, both of Wichita and Tom Frazier of Newton and a daughter, Vicky Rajewski of Hays;
five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Wednesday, December 13 at
Maize Cemetery with Father Robert Wechter of St. Johns Catholic Church. Burial followed at Maize City cemetery
in Maize.

three children, Jeff Seimears of Oak Grove, Jill Bates of Richmond, Mo., and Leslie Hall of Oak Grove, nine grandchildren,

Essie Mills was born July 6, 1876, near Severy,
Kansas, to Thomas and Sally Mills. As Mrs. Essie Ward, she passed away peacefully at her home near Climax, Kansas,
May 18, 1943, after a very short illness,
She was united in marriage to Mr. Elmer A.Ward February 21, 1898. The following children were born to this union;
Mrs. Henry Ott, Lamont, Kansas; Mrs. E.C. Richardson, Toronto, Kansas; and Mr. Harold M. Ward of the home.
She leaves five grandchilren, Paul, Phyllis, Elmer and Janet Ott, and Hugh Richardson. Two sisters survive, Mrs.
Stella Barron, Mrs. Gertrude Anderson of Fredonia, Kansas; two brothers, Will Mills of Fall River, Kansas, and
Thomas Mills of Independence, Kansas.
Mrs. Ward has lived her entire life near Climax, Kansas.
She was converted in her early life and joined the Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Order of Easter
Star.
Mrs. Ward was a devoted wife and mother and was a good neighbor. She will be missed by a host of relatives and
friends.
Funeral service was held from the Bairdd Funeral Friday at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Rev. Phillip D. Novell. Interment

Dora May Knapp was born May 31, 1882, north of
Howard, Kansas and departed this life at 95 years, one month, and 15 days.
She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, 4 sisters and her parents, Alfanzo and Fidelia Jane Templeton.
She was a member of the old Paw Paw Church.
Dora was united in marriage to Vernor E. Knapp Feb. 17, 1902. To this union 5 children were born.
Her husband preceded her in death June 18, 1964. She leaves to mourn her passing one daughter, Mrs. Vera Monical
of Moline; four sons,

Harold Forest "Duckman" Whittaker III,
age 29, a resident of Severy, died Thursday, March 31, 2011 as a result of an automobile accident near Pawhuska,
Okla.
He was born on sept. 18, 1981 at Eureka, Kan.,
the son Gary Lee Whittaker and Marilyne Kay Brooks.
Harold was a very dedicated father to his children.
He loved hanging out with family and friends and cheating at penny poker and gin rummy. Harold was a graduate of
West Elk High School.
During his yourth Harold started wrestling with
the Douglass Wrestling Club. His wrestling continued throughout his high school career and after. Harold wrestled
in tournaments in Australia and he won the Iowa National Open. Harold worked as a roughneck for Gulick Drilling
in Eureka. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and setting off big fireworks.
Harold is survived by his soul mate, Stephanie
Pettyjohn of Severy; one son Christopher Whittaker of Severy; one daughter Alya Whittaker of Valley Center, Kan.;
his father Gary Whittaker of Severy; his mother Marilyne Whittaker of Mount Lake Terrace, Wash.; step-mother Mila
Whittaker of Severy; paternal grandmother Opal Whittaker of Severy, maternal grandmother, Inez Brooks of Aberdeen,

Thomas Frank Miller, ago 66. a resident of Wichita,
Kan., passed away Monday, March 14, 2011 at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital.
He was born on Aug. 9. 1944 in Eureka, Kan., the
son Frank A. and Dorothy M. (Biggs) Miller.
Tom was a graduate of Eureka High School class
of 1962, On Feb. 19, 1977 he was united in marriage to Karen R. Karris. Tom worked as a welder. He was a member
of the First Evangelical Free Church in Wichita.
He is survived by his wife Karen Miller of Wichita
and one sister Beulah Mast of Severy. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister June Hamilton.
Cremation has taken place and graveside memorial
services will be held Friday, March 18, 2011, ai Piedmont Cemetery.

ROBERT, ELWIN S.
Elwin Scott Robert of rural Severy died at his
home on Friday, April 1, 2011. Elwin was born on Aug. 23, 1932 to Henry Robert and Nellie (Smith) Robert. He was
born, raised, and died on his beloved farm which was part of the original Robert family homestead.
Elwin was a graduate of Severy High School. He married Ramona Jean Hicks on Nov. 25, 1960 at the St Paul's Church
of the Nazarene in Kansas City, Mo. Elwin and Ramona were married for 50 years and raised three children.
Elwin lived by three principles, servitude to God, dedication to his family, and passionate farming of the land.
With the untimely death of his father
Henry in 1952 Elwin provided for his mother Nellie
and eight brothers and sisters. He was a charter member of the Severy Church of the Nazarene organized in the early
1950s. Elwin supervised the building of the Nazarene Church in Severy which was dedicated in July of 1969. When
not with family or attending church. Elwin could most likely be found on the tractor farming the land. Wheat, soybeans
and sorghum were his favorite crops. Elwin was employed as a Machinist for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita for 33 years.
Survivors include his wife Ramona and three children, Jim Robert of Dallas Texas; Cindy Robert of Asheville N.C.;
and Rhonda Couchenour along with her husband Bill and two children Jonathan and Will of Grand Rapids, Mich. Siblings
include Eldon Robert and his wife Teresa of Wichita, Wesley Robert and his wife Ruby of Severy, Melba Weyrauch
and her husband Pat of Emporia, Morris Robert and his wife Janie of Fredonia, Larry Robert and his wife Kathy of
Emporia, Francis Robert and his wife Colleen of Fredonia, Floyd Robert and his wife Bernice of Severy, Joyce Sayers
and her husband Chuck of Douglasville, Ga. Elwin was an uncle to 27 nieces and nephews of the Robert side of the
family and 17 on the Hicks side of the family.
Elwin was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Severy Church of the Nazarene in Severy,
with Pastor Dave Warren officiating. Burial to follow at he South Lawn Cemetery in Severy.

Christopher Jacob Austin, age 22, a resident of
Eureka, Kan., died Thursday, March 31, 2011 at St. John's Hospital in Tulsa, Okla.
He was born on Sept. 22, 1988 in Wichita, the son of Eldon Leroy Austin and Mary Leigh Doane.
Chris was a graduate of Eureka High School and attended one year at Kansas State University. In high school he
was a member of Eureka High School FFA Chapter, the Eureka High Band playing saxophone and baritone and a member
of the Harmony Sunflowers 4-H Club. Chris enjoyed hunting deer, trapping, Nascar and NHRA .
Chris is survived by his parents Eldon and Mary Austin both of Eureka, two sisters Leigha Kimberlin of Eureka and
Lacie Shirley of Wamego, Kan., maternal grandparents Melvin and Joyce Doane of Severy, paternal grandmother Betty
Austin of Fredonia, one nephew Kellen Kimberlin, and three nieces Zoic Scott, IraLynn Kimberlin and AereAna Shirley.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather Neil Austin.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 8, 2011 at the Severy United
Methodist Church in Severy, with Pastor Charles Cryderman.

Virginia Lois King, age 90, a resident of El Dorado,
and formerly of Severy, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2011 at her home.
She was born on Nov. 20, 1920 in Walnut, Kan., the daughter of John Manning and Iva Barbara (McCaslin) Simmons.
Virginia was a graduate of McCune Rural High School.
On Oct. 20, 1940 she married Emmett Fred King at Labette, Kan., and to this union was born two sons, Richard and.
Kenneth and two daughters, Phyllis and Maltha.
Virginia was a homemaker. She was a member of the Severy United Methodist Church where she played organ for many
years. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #171, Virginia enjoyed crocheting,
quilting and gardening.
Virginia is survived by her sons, Richard King of El Dorado and Kenneth King of Rose Hill, Kan.: her daughters,
Phyllis Crowe of West, Texas and Martha Wolfe of Augusta; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Emmett on May 15, 2000, two brothers Gerald and Verle, one
sister Opal Stewart and her faithful border collie Addie.
Graveside services were held Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the Lake Creek Union Cemetery in Bartlett, Kan,, with Pastor
Ron Garrison officiating.

Edgar O. Gilbert, a ten year resident of the Eagle
River Northwoods, died Tuesday at the home of his son, Dr. E.E. Gilbert of Rhinelander, Wisconsin. He was seventy-three.
He_was born in Severy, Kansas in 1906 and married Irene Krause in Eagle River in 1972. His first wife Esther, preceded
him in death. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Eagle River, where he was a trustee. He was
a member of the Eagle River Masonic Lodge, a past patron of Eagle River Order of Eastern Star and a 32nd degree
Mason of a Green Bay Scottish Rite Lodge. He was a retired employee of the Kansas State Highway Commission.
Mr. Gilbert also was active in the International Order of Odd Fellows. He was a past Grand Master of Kansas I.O.O.F.
Services were held at the First Congregational Church in Eagle River, with the Rev. John Morrison officiating,
on Thursday morning. Masonic services were conducted at 7:30 P.M. and services by the Order of the Eastern Star
were at 8:00 P.M. on Thursday.
He is survived by his wife, Irene, of the home, on son, Dr. E.E. Gilbert of Rhinelander, Wis.; two brothers, Roy

Severy, Kansas.
Graveside services were held in South Lawn Cemetery, on Saturday, Dec. 19, 19JO. Rev. H. J. Sterling officiated.
I.O.O.F. services were conducted by the Grand Lodge of Kansas. Services were conducted by Forsberg Funeral Home

BOSS, LESTER
Lester Boss son of Clem and Anna Burt Boss, was
born on a farm near Coyville, Kansas, on Dec. 19, 1896.
He was united in marriage to Grace Suits on Feb. 18, 1920. To this union 6 children were born, two of whom preceeded
him in death, Clarence, who died at the age of 2 years, and Betty, who died at the age of 19 years.
They were engaged in farming in and around Fall River and Severy communities until retirement in 1966, at which
time Lester and Grace moved back to Severy in Dec. of the same year that Grace departed this life.
On July 25, 1974, he was united in marriage to Lona Rogers, and they made their home in Severy, Kansas until he
departed this life on Sept. 9, 1979.
He was preceeded in death by one son, one daughter, one grandson, and one half-brother.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Lona of the home, one son, Floyd of Osage City, Kansas; three daughters,
Bernita Kight of Severy,; Kansas, Verna MacDonaid of Lake Villa, Illinios and Anna May Adcock of Overland, Park,
Kansas one daughter-in-law, 2 sons-in-law, 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one brother, Gilbert Boss
of Cherryvale, Kansas, 2 Sisters: Mrs. Mable Booth, Eureka, Kansas and Mrs. Etta Herb, Iola, Kansas.
Funeral services were held, Wednesday, September 12,1979, at the Forsberg Funeral Home in Severy, Kansas. Rev.
Don Harper officiated and burial was in South Lawn Cemetery, Severy, Kansas.The services were directed by the Zimmerman

DARIEN W. “ARKIE” OWEN
Mr. Owen, 79 years old, died June 25, 2011, in Hobbs. He was born March 11, 1932, in Eureka, KS. A memorial service
will be held at a later date.
On October 17, 1950, Arkie joined The Army National Guard in Eureka, Kansas. He moved to Clovis, NM, and was in
the NM Army National Guard. He was promoted through grades up to E-7 and held duties which included First Sergeant,
State Civil Service Administration, Supply Technician and Federal Civil Service. In 1975, he went to Roswell, NM,
as Battalion Property Book Officer and was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer. He retired in June 1989. After retirement
he stayed with the NM Army National Guard until August 4, 1991, for a total of 41 years and 7 months in the military.
Arkie retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean Owen, of Hobbs; two sons, Arlie Owen and wife, Sharon, of San Antonio, TX,
and Leonard Rice and wife, Mary Denise, of Hobbs; three daughters, Joey Limon and husband Francisco, Lena Harper
and husband David, and Donna Springer and husband Alan, all of Hobbs; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren;
two brothers, Carl V. Owen, Jr. and wife Eloise, and Lloyd D. Owen, both of Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews
from Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie (Buffington) Owen; his father, Carl V. Owen, Sr.; four sisters,
Joyce (Owen) Matlock, Bernice L. (Owen) Kelley, Georgia Owen and Lennie (Owen) Elliott; and one brother, Royce
Owen.
