Bowen, Frederick Orville, 81, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001. Service 3 p.m. Friday,

Mr. Bowen was born in Piedmont, Kan. on Jan. 21, 1920. During his high school years, he was a track and field athlete,
receiving numerous awards and an offer of a scholarship. His specialty was the board jump and he broke a Kansas
state record in the event.
He served four years with the Army during World War II in the Aleutian Islands. He was a mess sergeant and took
pride in providing food to the troops.
Mr. Bowen was a resident of the Bellevue Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for 16 years.
Preceded in death by his biological parents, William and Maud Brown; adopted parents, Fred and May Hutton and wife,
Samantha Bowen.

Mary Neoma Hutton Burke, 94, Topeka, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at a Topeka
nursing home.
Mrs. Burke taught in rural schools in the Flint Hills near Eureka, Rolling Ridge, Star, Piedmont and Halvorson
near Thrall. She traveled horseback to her first three jobs. She later was a substitute teacher in Topeka.
She was born March 14, 1908, in Greenwood County, the daughter of Charlotte May Moore and Frederick Montgomery
Hutton. Her parents participated in the Cherokee Strip Run in 1893. She earned a teaching certificate at Emporia
State Teachers College. She lived in Mayetta, Lyons, Ottawa and Hutchinson before moving to Topeka in 1945. She
attended Washburn University.
Mrs. Burke was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer for the Womens Society
of Christian Service, and the YOMAC Sunday school class. She also was a member of the American Association of University
Women, the YWCA, Toastmistress Club and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She married Loren Joseph "Joe" Burke on Dec. 23, 1934, in Wichita. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include two children, Mary Jo Kenny, Highland, N.J., and Robert H. Burke, Topeka; five grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Piedmont. Mrs. Burke will lie in state from 4 to 9 p.m. today and
9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.

CONYERS, ROSABELLE BERNICE SHAW
Conyers, Rosabelle Bernice Shaw, 86, went to be with her Lord Sept. 7, 2003. Service
10 a.m. Thursday, Broadway Mortuary; burial will take place at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Piedmont (KS) Cemetery, where
she will be buried next to her husband of 41 years, Harvey Conyers and infant children, Carolyn and Mark. Bernice
attended Emporia State Teachers College and McPherson Central College, earning a teaching certificate in 1936.
She taught for three years in a one-room country school. She met Harvey Conyers, a school principal at Sallyards,
Piedmont and Haverhill, KS, shortly thereafter and they married on Oct. 6, 1939 at Eureka, KS. Bernice and Harvey
raised four sons and relocated the family to Wichita in 1952, moving from Leon, KS. In her lifetime, her love of
music and the ability to play the piano provided her the opportunity to play for worship services at a small rural
Lutheran church outside of Eureka, KS, assist with music productions at several of the schools where her husband
was principal. For many years she taught young children to play the piano. She had an excellent singing voice and
was able to provide entertainment and enjoyment for family and others throughout the years of her life. She taught
herself to play the organ and was church organist for 16 years and adult Sunday school teacher for 25 years both
at Mt. Olivet and West Side United Methodist churches. She was an avid reader and used her love of reading to stay
abreast of world and local events. She was a fruitful provider of Wichita Eagles "letters to the editor,"
when moved. She provided service to others by volunteering in the late 1950's to be a National Defense Block Mother,
ready to provide evacuation route information to those if Wichita had become a target for nuclear attack. She wrote
poetry for special occasions, cooked school lunches, taught music and was also a substitute teacher in many of
the communities where she lived. Finally she was a grandmother and great-gr andmother. Survivors include: sons,
Glen of Joplin, MO, John of Palatine, IL, Gregg of Wichita, Chris of Kechi; sisters, Genevieve Martinie of Shawnee,
Mary Kearn of Miltonvale, Martha Francis of Eureka, Anita Haesemeyer of Mesa, AZ; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren.
