Harper County was organized in 1873. It was named for 1st Sgt. Marion Harper, 2nd Reg., Kansas Cavalry, who was killed in the Civil War. Anthony is the county seat; besides the cities listed at the left, the communities of Bluff City, Corwin, Crisfield, Crystal Springs, Duquoin, Hawk, Midway and Ruella lie within the boundaries of Harper County.
