BAYLESS J. W. "BILL"

Memorial services for Bill Bayless, 75, were Tuesday afternoon July 8 at 2 p.m. at the Elliott Mortuary Chapel in Anthony with Pastor John Schnelle officiating. Bill passed away early Sunday morning in Wichita. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and his son, Gregg Bayless of Anthony his daughter Lisa Prouse of Harper sisters Elna Braswell of Duncan, Oklahoma and Bonnie Reed of Harrison, Arkansas, five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

BELL, LESTER

Lester Bell, 90, of Perryton, Texas, died Friday, October 11, 2002. He was born November 30, 1911 in Attica, Kansas.

He married Fern Moore on July 3, 1929 at Newkirk, OK. She passed away in 1995. A Development Foreman for Phillips Petroleum for 33 years, he retired in 1976. He lived in the Amarillo, Texas area since 1965.

Lester was a member of the United Methodist Church of Perryton, Texas area since 1965.

Survivors include, son, Robert E. Bell of Fairhope, AL; daughter, Shirley J., Yancy of Borger, Tx., granddaughters; Beth Wolfe of Tampa, Fl., and Kathie Seleeth of Arlington, Tx and grandson, Chris Yancy of Commerce, Tx.; three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church, Perryton, Tx., with interment in the Attica Cemetery, Attica, KS. Rev. Phil Morris officiating. Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, Inc., of Perryton in charge of arrangements.

BROWN, AGNES LILLIAN

Agnes Lillian Brown, 86, of Hutchinson, KS died Dec. 23, 1999 at Elm Grove Estates, Hutchinson.

She was born Aug 2, 1913, at Canadian, Tx, the daughter of Wiliam and Martha Damerell Berry. She was a 1931 graduate of Attica High school.

Hutchinson resident since 1942, moving from Freedom, Ok, she was a homemaker.

She belonged to the First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, the Christmas Sewing Club and various groups within the church.

On Aug. 16, 1933, she married Gerald C. Brown at Attica. He survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Jerry, Ulysses; a sister, Roberta Jacobs, Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson, with Dr. D. Allen Polen Jr., presiding. Graveside service was held at 4:00 p.m. at Attica Cemetery. (Attica Independent, December 31, 1999, Vol. 113, No. 40)

COLIBERT, ELSIE MARIE

Elsie Marie Colibert age 73 of Fall River, KS passed away March 21, 2000. She was a homemaker.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 24, 2000 at 10 a.m. at the Resthaven Mortuary Chapel, Wichita.

Survivors include husband, Claude H Colibert, of the home, son, Michael Colibert of Peck, Ks., daughter, Teresa "Tish" Sutter of Burlingame, KS., Shannon Colibert of Chanute, Ks., and Tandi Colibert of Wichita, KS., grandchildren, Travis and Tamera Colibert of Peck, Ks. DANIEL, R. OTIS

R. Otis Daniel of Richland Hills, Tx., was born March 17, 1910 in Wickes, Arkansas and passed away July 16, 2000 in North Richland Hills, Texas at the age of 90.

He was a retired minister for the Church of Christ.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 66years, Laveta Daniel of Richland Hills, Tx, daughters, Yvonne Aune and her husband, Marvin, of Nampa, ID, Gloria English and her husband, Rex of North Richland Hills, Tx, ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, numerous other relatives and a host of loving friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 19, 2000 at the Baker Blvd Church of Christ in North Richland Hills. Interment was in the Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, Tx. Shannon Rufe Snow Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements. (Attica Independent, July 21, 2000)

GRANT, MARGARET

Margaret Grant, 96, of Attica, passed away July 23 at the Harper Hospital.

HARPER, LINVILLE LOIS

Linville Lois Harper 52 of Peck, Kansas, daughter of Claude Doop of Harper, passed away December 31st, she was a cosmetologist.

Services were Friday, January 3, 2003 at the Smith Mortuary Chapel in Haysville, KS.

Other survivors were son Lance Harper of Belle Plain Kansas, daughter Shannon Haper of Wellington, KS and a sister, Linda Hasenbank of Tarzana, Ca.

KIRKPATRICK, DONALD N.

Donald Norman Kirkpatrick son of Wayne and Georgetta Ann (Alfstead) Kirkpatrick was born February 28, 1951 in Long Beach, California. He passed away Friday morning, March 10, 2000 at Via Christi Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus in Wichita 11 days after his 49th birthday.

He is survived by his long time friend and companion, Wanda Sherven, and her daughters, Tina Ann Thompson and Kandie T. Sherven and one son, Andrew Scot Kirkpatrick, all of Harper; one brother, Tim Kirkpatrick of Wichita, KS and one sister, Kay Kirkpatrick of Mira Loma, California; other relatives and many friends. LEADER, HARRY HARVEY

Harry Harvey Leader, 63, of Portland, OR, was born May 15, 1936 at Attica, KS and passed away Jan. 15, 2000 at Portland after a battle with leukemia.

He retired in 1998 as house manager for Rainbow Adult Living Center in Portland. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include sisters, Mary Frechette and Helen Niemann of Attica, KS., Velma Anthony and Arlene Leader of Pratt, Ks.; and brother, Carl Leader of Sandy, Ok.

Memorial services were scheduled for Saturday. January 22, 2000 from 2 to 4 p.m. at 11336 SE Alder in Portland, Or. (Attica Independent, January 21, 2000)

LOEWENSTEIN, KATHRYN M.

Kathryn M. Loewenstein, 82, of Sharon and mother of Mrs. Delmar (Beverly) Ricke of Harper passed away last Friday. Vigil was at 6:30 Sunday with funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. Monday, both at ST. Boniface Catholic Church, Sharon.

Survivors, sons, Robert of Burlington, Oklahoma, Roger of Wichita, daughters Beverly Ricke of Harper, Jean Clark of Sharon, Donna Shinliver of Medicine Lodge, Joan Shepler of Wichita, brothers Francis Hommertzheim of Wiley, Colorado, Jack Hommertzheim of Valley Center; sisters, Elizabeth Loux of Salina, Pauline Lee of Wichita, Irene Bitsche of Chickasha, Oklahoma, 21 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren.

McDANIEL, ELLIS D.

Ellis D. McDaniel, 7y2, died on September 27, 2002 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital.. Born on August 23, 1930 in Sharon he was the son of Wilbur J. McDaniel and Rachel Harris McDaniel. He had been a resident of Barber County the majority of his life. He had worked in the lab at the National Gypsum Co and was also a farmer, Ellis was a member of Frist Christian Church and American Legion. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

On November 21, 1954, he married Ethel Schnelle in Medicine Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel, two daughters, Lisa McDaniel, Cheney and Dena Marten, Rosalia; one brother, Bob McDaniel, Attica and one granddaughter Katie Maren of Rosalia.
Services were held on September 30 at First Christian Church with Pastor Tom Walters presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

McKEE, DONALD C.

Donald C McKee, 64, passed away November 10, 2002 in the Harper Hospital at Harper, KS.

He was born September 11, 1938 in Wichita, Kansas and he and his sister Gall made their home in Plainview Kansas when they were young.

While in high school, Don worked for the Wichita Eagle on the press.

When Don was 18 years old he was involved in an accident and lived in nursing homes since that time. He was currently a resident at the Attica Long Term Care Facility.

He is survived by one sister and brother in law Gail L and Marvin Smith of Wichita, Kansas.

A private family service is planned.

McKEEVER, DIMPLE ORETA

Dimple Oreta McKeever, was born June 3, 1918 in Cookeville, Tennessee. She was one of eleven children born to George Washington and Margaret Eliza Hickey Howell.

She moved with her family to a farm north of Harper in 1920. She later married Byard McKeever in Wichita and they made their home in Attica. Byard passed away February 23, 1980 and on Saturday evening June 1, 2002, Oren passed away, two days before her 84th birthday.

Oreta was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five brothers Ernest, Victor, Mansfield Clement and Hooper Howell and three sisters; Etta Parish, Margie Holliday and Clara Barker.

She is survived by two sisters, Beatrice Kelly of Oxford, Kansas and Rosalee Lawrence of Denver, Colorado, several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday June 4, 2002 with Pastor Bob Franklin officiating. The Elliott Mortuary in Anthony was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Attica Long Term Care Facility in care of Oreta. (Attica Independent, June 6, 2002)

MOLZEN, HAARY EARL

Harry Earl Molzen age 86 of Newton Kansas died Wednesday September 11, 2002 at the Schowalter Villa in Hesston. He was born in Newton on May 21, 1916 to Harry O and Myrtle V (McQuown) Molzen.

He was raised in Harvey County and attended District #3 grade school and graduated from Newton High School with the class of 1934. He attended Bethel College for two years then went to Kansas State University where he graduated with the class of 1939. He was a vocational agriculture teacher at Attica High School until 1942 when he was drafted. He served with the U. S. Air Force until being medically discharged.

Earl returned to the Newton area and farmed with his family southeast of town. He farmed until 2000 when he moved to the Schowalter Villa. (Attica Independent, September 12, 2002)

MULLENDORE, THELMA R

Thelma Ruth Mullendore, the daughter of O. G. and Lula (Gleason) Holiday, was born July 11, 1914 at Harper, Kansas and passed away Saturday morning, August 26, 2000 at Wichita, Kansas at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 12 days.

Thelma was a member of the Calvary Bible Baptist Church in Harper and worked for the hospital and nursing home as a housekeeper.

On March 28, 1931 she was united in marriage with Franklin J. Mullendore in Anthony. He passed away on December 31, 1980.

Thelma was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Lloyd Holiday.

She is survived by her sons Eddy of Sacramento, California, Bill of Harper, and Larry of Coppers Cove, Texas, her daughter, Joyce Phye of Haper, her sisters, Leona Burke of Oologah, Oklahoma and Mildred Malt of Newton; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren other relatives and many friends.

Graveside services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 28, 2000 at the Harper Cemetery with Mike Friend officiating. The Elliott Funeral Home in Harper was in charge of arrangements. (Attica Independent, September 8, 2000)

NICHOLAS, EDITH M.

Edith M. Nicholas, 79, passed away Monday, November 15, 1999 at the Wheatland Health Care Center in Kingman, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Wednesday, November 17, 1999 in the Elliott Funeral Home at Harper with Rev. Bobby Franklin officiating.

Burial will be in the Duquoin Cemetery.

SCHAEFER, DAVE A.

Dave A. Schaefer, 36, died Nov. 28, 2002 at his home in Pratt.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 1, 2002 at Larrison Mortuary, with Pastor Don Mutton presiding. Burial was in Attica Cemetery, Attica.

He was born Oct. 3, 1966, at Glendale, Calif., the son of Clarence H and Betty J. Picker Schaefer. A Pratt resident for 32 years, coming from California, he was a diesel mechanic for Southwest Truck Parts, Pratt. He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Pratt Friends Church and the National Hot Rod Association.

On September 11, 1998 he married Cheryl J. Dixon at Pratt. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Devon James and Jacob Alan and a daughter, Skylar Nicole all of the home; his father, Braman, Okla.; his mother, Betty Schaefer, Pratt, a brother, Terry, Pratt, two sisters, Karen Lukens Pratt and Carla Horyna, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and grandparents, Stanley Margaret Picker, Bakersfield, Calif.

He was preceded in death by grandparents Charles Schaefer and Virginia Boyce.

SHEPHERD, PAULINE M.

Pauline M. Shepherd, 92, of Taylor Road in Columbus Indiana formerly of Harper, Kansas, passed away Thursday morning, February 17, 2000 at Four Seasons Health Car Center in Columbus, Indiana.

She was born August 23, 1907 in Wichita, Kansas the daughter of Robert and Dorothy Schwae Mallonee. She married Chester J. Shepherd on July 14, 1934 in Wichita, Kansas. He died November 4, 1987.

Mrs. Shepherd was a high school math teacher at Chaparral High School. She was honored with the Delta Kappa Gamma State Achievement Award.

She was a member of the Harper United Methodist Church and Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Sorority for Women in Education. She was also a 65 year old volunteer for the American Red Cross and was inducted into the Red Cross Volunteer Hall of Fame.

Pauline is survived by her daughter, Jeanette Hostetler of Columbus, Indiana; two grandsons, Mark Hostetler of Dahlonega, Georgia and Craig Hostetler of Kensington, Maryland, one great-grandson, Bryce Jammrekk Hostetler of Dahlonega, Georgia; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 10 AM Saturday February 26, 2000 in the United Methodist Church at Harper with Rev. Phil Morris officiating.

Interment will be in the Harper Cemetery.

The Elliott Funeral Home in Harper is in charge of local arrangements.

Memorials may be given to either the American Red Cross, the United Methodist Church of Harper or the Chester & Pauline Memorial Scholarship Fund at Chaparral in memory of Pauline M. Shepherd. (Attica Independent, February 25, 2000)

SWONGER, LARRY

Larry Swonger of Sharon, Kansas, was born February 4, 1944 at Anthony, KS, the son of William (Buck) Swonger and Darlene Spurling Swonger. He passed away April 7, 2000 at the Pratt Regional Medical Center, Pratt, Ks at the age of 56 years, 2 months and three days.

Larry graduated from Sharon High School in 1962. He married Judith Diane Pulliam in 1963. He was a salesman for John Deere and Ford Motor Co. and was a long time resident of Kiowa and Sharon, Ks.

Survivors include sons, Doug of Kiowa, KS, Chris of Anthony, KS., and Troy of Pratt, KS, daughter Jodi Swonger of Cunningham, Ks; mother, Darlene Swonger, Sharon, KS; brother Ronald L Swonger of Sharon, KS, seven grandchildren, Emilie Cae Swonger, Corisa Michele Swonger, Michael Douglas Swonger, Matthew Austin Swonger, Kaityln Nichole Swonger, Alyssa Leigh Swonger and Kalie Ann Swonger. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Jack and Bucky.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 11, 2000 at the Kiowa Community Building, Kiowa, Ks., with Rev. Jack Pilgrim officiating. Interment was in the Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge, Ks. Arrangements were made by Fisher Funeral Home, Kiowa, Ks. Memorials suggested to the American Heart Association and/or The American Diabetes Association. (Attica Independent, April 14, 2000)
