OBITUARIES

ARTMAN, ABRAHAM

Abraham Artman, a retired carpenter, 74 years of age, died at his home in Olathe, Tuesday, December 30. The funeral was held at the home, January 1, 1914 at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. J. O. Harvey and burial made in the Olathe cemetery.

The family has the sympathy of the community. (Olathe Register, January 8, 1914)

BARBER, SARAH (MRS. M. S.)

Spring Hill New Era: Word was received last Saturday afternoon by Mrs. G. D. Weir, of the death of her daughter, Mrs. M. S. Barber at St. Johns, Kas., G. G. Weir and Sam Weir left here immediately for St. Johns. Mrs. Weir was so prostratel by the telegram that she was unable to go. The funeral was held Monday at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Barber, as Sarah Weir, was well known in this community, having been born and raised here and was for many years a Maimi County school teacher. She was 37 years of age and the cause of death was uraemic poisoning, following the birth of a son. She leaves a devoted husband and a little daughter, Bernice, 10 years old. The little boy baby who died a short time after she did was laid away to rest in its mother's arms. It was a sad affair and the friends of both Mr. Barber and the Weir families will sorrow with them. Mr. Barber was at one time principal of the Spring Hill school but is now in the undertaking and furniture business in St. Johns. (Olathe Register, March 19, 1914)

BINNS, JOSEPH

Joseph Binns, one year of age, died at the home of his parents at Santa Fe, Mo., December 28, at 2 p.m. of diphtheria. Burial was made in the Santa Fe cemetery December 29. (Olathe Register, January 8, 1914)

BRADLEY, MRS. HENRY

Mrs. Henry Bradley, one of the pioneers of the county died at her home near Wilder, Monday, January 5, at the age of 82. She lived with her sons, John and Dan and daughter, Katie. Another daughter, Mrs. William Glynn, three sons, William in Oklahoma, Dan and Joe in Wyoming survive. The funeral was held Wednesday at the Shawnee Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Fr. Schwan. Burial was made in the Shawnee Cemetery. (Olathe Register, January 8, 1914)

HADLEY, MILTON

Milton Hadley, who formerly lived in the Fairview addition to Olathe, died at Shawnee Saturday. The funeral was held at the Shawnee Methodist church at 2 o'clock, Sunday afternoon and burial was made in the Shawnee cemetery. (Olathe Register, March 19, 1914)

HAMMOND, MARY JANE (HINMAN)

Mary Jane (Hinman) Hammond was born on Hinman Prairie, Pike County, Illinois, September 16, 1833. She was the next to the youngest of nine children. Her father's home was the meeting place for the early Methodist and later he gave the ground on which was built Hinman Chapel. At a very early age she united with the Methodist Church and continued a faithful member until death. She was the last of the family.

In 1851, she was married to Lucius Foote. Mrs. Clara B. Smith is a child by this union. On October 24, 1855, Mrs. Foote was married to J. A. Hammond. To this marriage three children were born, Edward C., Charles E., and Arthur B., all of Olathe.

She came to Johnson County, 1859 and lived near Grand View schoolhouse. She has been a resident of Olathe for thirty-three years. Mr. Hammond died December 20, 1905. They are gone but not forgotten for they lived to bless every good cause. Their works do follow them.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Zook, her pastor, from the home on North Kansas Avenue, Sunday at 4 o'clock. Her body was graciously laid in the tomb, but the Spirit went to God who gave it. (Olathe Register, April 2, 1914)

HOLLIS, W. J. JUDGE

Judge W. J. Hollis, formerly a respected citizen of Johnson county, died at his Florida home at Tampa, Friday, January 2, at 6:35 p.m. at the age of 72 years, 11 months and 10 days. The funeral service was held at the chapel of Julien Furniture Co., Tuesday, January 6, at 2 o'clock p.m. conducted by Mrs. Sibley of the Spiritualist church in Kansas City, Mo.

Burial was made in the Olathe cemetery by the side of his wife who died nearly three years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Hollis formerly lived at Springfield and Moberly, Mo. It was while he lived at the former place that he served in the Missouri legislature. Later he removed to Kansas City where he amassed quite a fortune. They lived in Olathe for 10 years. His wife did here. Two years ago he went to Tampa, Fla., where he lived until the time of his death. Mr. Cook and a grandson were with him at the time of his death.

Two children, George M. Hollis of Welda, Kas., and Mrs. John A. Cook of Olathe survive, both were at the funeral. For some time Mr. Hollis was engaged in the livery business here with his son-in-law, Mr. Cook. A grandson, Frank Holtsinger of Moberly was present at the funeral.

Mr. Hollis was a great friend of Judge Lucas in Kansas City. He was a fine man and well liked. He was of quiet likeable disposition. (Olathe Register, January 8, 1914)

MALONEY, J. C. F. DR.

Dr. J. C. F. Maloney, a pioneer of Kansas city, died at his home at Shawnee, Johnson county, Kansas, Tuesday evening, February 17. He was 84 years old, Doctor Maloney was born in Maryland in 1830, and came to Kansas city in 1865. He conducted a drug store at Fourteenth and Main streets until 1878 when he moved his business to Shawnee, Kas. As a resident of Shawnee he was known as an ardent worker for the good roads movement, and was one of the organizers of the first good roads club. His life was above reproach. A wife and three children, Mrs. D. R. Abbot and Mrs. Charles Earnshaw, Shawnee and Dr. H. W. Maloney of Thayer, survive. Funeral services were from the home at 10 o'clock Thursday morning, conducted by the Rev. Madden. Burial at Shawnee Cemetery. (Olathe Register, February 26, 1914)

McCOY, MARY

Little Mary McCoy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McCoy of Pomona in Franklin County, died Monday evening. She was 17 months old. The body was brought to Olathe Tuesday and the funeral was held Wednesday at the S. T. McCoy home. Burial was made in the Olathe Cemetery. (Olathe Register, Thursday, February 19, 1914)

McKELVEY, SAMUEL WOODS

Samuel Woods McKelvey, 76 years of age, and a former Olathe citizen, died at his home in Columbus, Kas., December 23. The body was shipped to Olathe for burial which took place December 27. (Olathe Register, January 8, 1914)

MEAD, MARY TERESA

Mrs. Mary Teresa Mead, 79 years of age, widow of John Mead, early residents of Olathe, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mamie Craigen at Sedalia, Mo., Wednesday, February 18. Mr. and Mrs. Mead came to Olathe in the early days and for years was associated with A. E. Moll in the blacksmithing business. Some 18 months ago Mr. Mead died here and Mrs. Mead went to live with her daughter. The funeral was held in Olathe Thursday at the Catholic Church, services being conducted by Father James Ording and interment made in the Olathe cemetery. The children who survive were present at the funeral. Thomas lives in Texas, Sister Mary Olive at Leavenworth, Mrs. Ella Campbell lives in Montana and Mrs. Mamie Craigen at Sedalia, Mo. MEYER, CATHERINE

Catherine Meyer, widow of John G. Meyer, who died August 9, 1911, died at her home near Shawnee February 21, of apoplexy at the age of 81 years. The Meyer family is one of the oldest and most respected in the county. The funeral was held Tuesday at the Shawnee Lutheran church, conducted by the Rev. W. T. H Kerl, pastor of the Lutheran Church of which the family have been life long members. Interment was made in the Shawnee cemetery. (Olathe Register, February 26, 1914)

MICHEAU, FRANK

Frank Micheau, five days old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Micheau, died at Lenexa, Tuesday. The funeral was held Wednesday. (Olathe Register, February 12, 1914)

PRATT, HENRY

Henry Pratt, colored, 77 years of age, father of John and Sam Pratt of Olathe, died at Emporia, Tuesday, February 17. The body was brought to Olathe where the funeral was held Sunday and interment made in the Olathe cemetery. (Olathe Register, February 26, 1914)

RHINEHART, NANCY IRWIN

Mrs. Nancy Irwin Rhinehart, died at her home Thursday, March 5, 1914, near Spring Hill, aged 79 years, 4 months and 25 days. Nancy Irwin Smith was born in Preston County, Virginia, October 10, 1834, and was married to Capt. Iret Rhinehart in Monroe County, Ohio, August 11, 1850. To them 11 children were born, 10 sons and one daughter of which five sons survive, who are L. N. Rhinehart of Spring Hill, John P. Rhinehart of Zanesville, Ohio, O. W. Rhinehart of Spring Hill, Frank S. Rhinehart of Seattle, Wash., and Sherman S. Rhinehart of Vancouver, B. C. September 30, 1969, Capt. And Mrs. Rhinehart came to Kansas and settled on the farm 2-1/2 miles southwest of town, where they lived until they moved to Spring Hill several years ago. Capt. Rhinehart died July 18, 1906. Funeral services were held from the M. E. church Saturday afternoon, March 7 at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. W. Kowalsky, the pastor, and the body was laid to rest in the Spring Hill cemetery beside that of her husband. (Olathe Register, March 19, 1914)

RIDLEY, WILLIAM

William Ridley, colored 57 years, of age, died at Shawnee, Monday. The funeral was held Wednesday and burial made in the Shawnee Cemetery. (Olathe Register, February 26, 1914)

SECHLER, WILL

Will Sechler, former clothing merchant at Olathe died at the home of his brother, C. D. Sechler at Stanley Tuesday morning. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon, February 26, at 2 o'clock from the Stanley Christian Church and burial will be made in the Pleasant Valley cemetery. Mr. Sechler leaves a widow and two small children. Mr. Sechler started the clothing store which E. W. Miller operates. (Olathe Register, February 26, 1914)

TAYLOR, MRS. W. H.

Mrs. W. H. Taylor, mother of six children, one son two weeks old, died near Hillsdale, March 20, the cause being whooping cough and measles. She was a sister of Mrs. W. H. Gall of Spring Hill. (Olathe Register, April 2, 1914)

WOOLARD, SARAH

Mrs. Sarah Woolard, 74 years of age, wife of I. J. Woolard, died at her home in Olathe, December 31, 1913. She was born near Richmond, Ky., May 12, 1839. She was the mother of 11 children, five of whom survive her; two daughters, Mrs. Cora Nelson and Mrs. Lou Unversaw, three sons, Joseph and Albert Freeman and James Fore. Her husband and seven grandchildren also survive. The funeral was held at the residence Friday, January 2, at 2:30 p.m. conducted by the Rev. W. A. Nance, pastor of the Christian Church of which the deceased has been a member since childhood. (Olathe Register, January 8, 1914)
