Kearny County was organized in 1873, but was dissolved ten years later. In 1888 it was re-organized as Kearney, and the next year the name was corrected to "Kearny." It was named for Gen. Philip Kearny of Civil War fame.
Kearny is the county seat; besides the cities listed at the left, the communities of Hartland, Passaic and Kearny lie within the boundaries of Kearny County.
