Labette County was organized in 1867, and was named for a creek which runs through the county; the creek had been named for an early trader, Pierre LaBette.
Oswego is the county seat; besides the cities listed at the left, the communities of Angola, Brownstone, Dennis, Fern, Garvin, Grove, Laneville, Montana, Penfield, Stover, Strauss, Valeda and Winway lie within the boundaries of Labette County.
