BOGART, HELENE F.

OAKLEY - Helene F. Bogart, 78, Oakley, died Monday, April 27, at Oakley Manor.

Mrs. Bogart was born Aug. 30, 1908, in Hays Center, Neb. She was a homemaker and a licensed practical nurse. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Altar Society, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Homemakers Club.

Survivors include her husband, Roland of Oakley; and a sister, Ruth Strop of Hays Center, Neb.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Oakley, the Rev. Alvin Werth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the church organ fund. A rosary and wake will be 8 p.m. Thursday at Koster Funeral Home, Oakley. Visitation is from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. (Salina Journal, April 29, 1987, submitted by Maurene Miller)

COOK, GERALDINE L. (BROWN)

Graveside service for Geraldine L. Cook, 77, longtime resident of Russell Springs, will be 2 p.m. CDT Wednesday at Russell Springs Cemetery, with the Rev. Bob Phillips officiating.

Mrs. Cook died Monday, April 28, 1997, at the Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.

She was born Dec. 4, 1919, at Glenwood, Iowa, the daughter of Alvie and Mabel Leat Brown.

A retired restaurant waitress, she had been a resident of Russell Springs since 1955 before moving to Syracuse two months ago. She enjoyed quilting and dancing.

She married Otto Horton and later married Orville Cook. Both preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joann Horton, a granddaughter, a great-grandaughter; a brother and three sisters.

Survivors are two sons, Bobby Horton, Goodland, and Randy Cook, Amarillo, Texas; two daughters, Shirley Chrisp, Rogers, Ark., and Edith Majors, Syracuse; four stepchildren; a brother, Jack Brown, Hopewell, Va; two half brothers, Marion Nickols and Harold Nickols, both of Spokane, Wash; eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two nieces.

COX, ROBERT BURDETTE

Robert Burdette Cox was born at Stratton, Colo., Jan. 31, 1924 and departed from this life Jan. 10 1942 at the age of 17 years, 11 months and 10 days.

At the age of 6 he moved to Kansas with his parents and lived in and near Russell Springs where he attended grade and one year high school.

He was attending school in Winona at the time of his death. Robert was well liked by everyone in the community and was a favorite among his classmates.

He received baptism while in the hospital.

Besides his parents he leaves to mourn his departure, seven sisters Burnedette, Lois, Roberta, Jean, Donna, and Vonna Fay, four brothers Darrell, Jerry, John and Jack, also his grandfather and a number of other relatives.

The funeral was conducted in Russell Springs school building Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 13, 1942 conducted by Rev. Walter M. Austin of Oakley.

Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Irl Shelton, Mr. and Mrs. Rollie David, Mrs J. C. Jones and Dale Williams. Pall bearers were Arthur Seeley, Frank Holsapple, Lawrence Deaver, Morrison Karr, Charles and Roland Salmans. Burial was in Russell Springs. GUTTERRIDGE, ANGIE WILMENA MATHENY

Angie Wilmena Matheny Gutterride, daughter of Peter and Hannah Jumper, was born Aug. 26, 1866, at Dinuba, Iowa, and departed this life Aug. 11, 1963, at Long Beach, Calif., at the age of 96 years, 11 months, and 17 days.

On May 5, 1886, whe was united in marriage to Otis F. Matheny at Hebron, Nebr., and they came to Western Kansas in a covered wagon driving an oxen team and homesteaded in the vicinity of Russell Springs, where they endured and survived the hardships of early day pioneering.

To this union were born seven children, Della Rickman, Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Melvin (Tuzy) Lee, Garden City, Earl Matheny, Russell Springs, Mrs. Clatuce (Hattie) Young, South Pasadena, Calif., Shannon Matheny, Corvallis, Ore., Mrs. Ross (Alta) Boyd, Hebron, Nebr., Mrs. Fred (Iva) Trompeter, Oakley.

In 1935 Mr. Matheny died.

On Dec. 30, 1940, she was united in marriage to Clarence U. Gutterridge and made her home at Boone, Iowa.

After the death of Mr. Gutterride on July 28, 1949, she came back to Western Kansas, and later made her home with her daughter, Della Rickman, Long Beach, Calif.

She was a member of the Second Presyterian church.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Alta Wurst, Oroville, Calif., her seven children, nineteen grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren, eight great great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Burial was next to her first husband, Otis Franklin Matheny, in the Russell Springs Cemetery, Russell Springs, Kansas.

JORDAN, FRANCIS EUGENE

PFC, Francis E. Jordan, 20, Russell Springs, was killed in action in Vietnam, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jordan were notified this week.

Details are unknown as yet. The Army has advised the body will be returned home for burial.

Pfc. Jordan becomes the second county and area victim of the war. He was a combat soldier in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade and was sent to Vietnam in February.

His parents were notified by the Army Sunday that their son was missing in action and the Army informed them Monday that he had been killed.

A Francis E. Jordan Memorial fund for rehabilitation and assistance of a Vietnam veteran from Local Selective board 78 will be established, the family said. Contributions may be made at either the Farmers State Bank, Winona, or the Farmers State Bank, Oakley.

Pfc. Jordan, a 1965 graduate of Russell Springs high school, entered the Army in August, 1967.

JORDAN, HAROLD

Harold Jordan, 68, life long resident of the Russell Springs community, died Saturday at the Logan County hospital. Mr. Jordan was an employee of the County Highway department for 35 years, retiring in 1967.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; son, Frank, Russell Springs; daughters Joyce Escudero, Cheyenne Wells, Colo., Marian Suter, Marjory Bailey, Enid Okla., one sister, Leila Teague, Council Bluffs, Iowa, 10 grandchildren, other relatives.

Services were held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Russell Springs school with burial in the Russell Springs cemetery. The Rev. Orvan Keller, Winona, officiated.

JUMPER, PETER M.

Peter M. Jumper was born September 30, 1837 in Ohio, died February 22, 1922 at the home of his daughter Mrs. Frank Matheney of Russell Springs. He was united in marriage to Miss Hanna M. Baker of Iowa March 18, 1860. Eight children were born to this union, three boys died in babyhood and one daughter died at the age of 18 years. His wife departed this life July 4, 1881. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Hubbell, Nebraska.

He was at one time a member of the Masonic Order of Oakley, Kansas, also a member of the G. A. R. Post of Denver, Colorado. He enlisted in the Civil War, Co. K. 3rd. Iowa Cavalry Vol., as a blacksmith in September 1861. Served until the close of the war in 1865.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church of Russell Springs. Rev. Canfield of Winona delivered a very pleasing ceremony from the XC Psalm.

The remains were layed to rest in the Russell Springs cemetery. He was a kind and loving father.

He leaves to mourn his loss, three daughters, one son. Mrs. Angie Matheney and Mrs. Alta E. Wurst of Russell Springs, Kansas, Mrs. Mary C. Malmberg of Denver, Colorado, Mr. Sim Jumper of North Bend, Oregon and a host of relatives and friends.

He said before he departed, "T'is just as easy to live right as to live wrong and best to be prepared."

MAJORS, DEBS W.

Debs W. Majors, 75, Syracuse, KS, died Sunday, July 17 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, KS.

He had lived in Syracuse, KS since Jan. 1, 1988, having moved there from Garden City.

Born May 14, 1913 in Brownsville, NE, Majors married Wilma Fern Brooks on Oct. 4, 1937 in Russell Springs, KS. She died Oct. 26, 1970.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

A retired farmer, Majors was a member of the Episcopal Church in Russell Springs, KS and the Eagles Lodge in Garden City. His hobbies included reading and playing pitch.

Survivors include three sons, Delbert, Oakley; Robert, Syracuse; Raymond, Garden City; one daughter, Jean Cook, Harper, KS; three brothers; 4 sisters; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, at Garnand Chapel in Garden City with the Rev. Ray Raley, First Baptist Church, Lakin, KS. officiating. Burial will be at the Russell Springs Cemetery, Russell Springs, KS. (Unknown paper, July 1988, submitted by Peggy Jean Smith)

MASTIN, WILLIS L.

Willis L. Mastin was born March 25, 1918 to Vern and Laura Mastin at Russell Springs, Kansas. Willis died February 15, 1988 at Larned, Kansas.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, leaving Russell Springs 47 years ago, Feb. 22, 1941 to enter military service in World War II. He served in Iceland and Europe. Willis was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

He married Shirley Howard in 1949.

He is survived by one son, Rick, and wife Mary Lou of Colby, KS; two grandsons, Steve and wife Kathy, Colby; Chris of Hays, KS; one brother C.R. (Blue) Mastin of Russell Springs; four sisters, Hazel Skilling, Garden City, KS; Evelyn Ady, Montrose, CO; Laura Belle Shelton, Quanah, TX; and Virginia Miller, Pawnee Rock, KS.

MATHENY, OTIS FRANK

Otis Frank Matheny was born October 30, 1859, in Adams County, Ohio, and died at his home in Logan County, west of Russell Springs, Kansas, Monday, August 12, 1935, at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 13 days.

When he was eight years of age he moved to Pontiac, Illinois, and lived there until manhood. Then he moved to Hubbell, Nebraska, in 1881, where he was united in marriage to Angie W. Jumper on May 5, 1886. He then moved to Logan County, Kansas and settled on a pre-emption six miles southwest of Winona, living there three years. Then he homesteaded his present home. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife and seven children: Mrs. Frank Richman, Long Beach, California; Mrs. Melvin Lee, Lakin, Kansas; Earl Matheny, Russell Springs, Kansas; Mrs. Clatuce Young, South Pasadena, California; Shannon Matheny, Hollywood, California; Mrs. Ross Boyd, Reynolds, Nebraska; Mrs. Archie Dagroo, Tribune, Kansas. He leaves also three sisters and one brother, Mrs. Ella Weaver, Oakland, California; Mrs. S. D. Brown, Mrs. Frank Worman, and Mr. J.L. Matheny, of Hubbell, Nebraska, also twenty grandchildren and a host of friends.

Burial was in the Russell Springs Cemetery, Russell Springs, KS.

MATHENY, WILLIAM EARL

William Earl Matheny was born west of Russell Springs Nov. 26, 1893, to Frank and Angie Matheny. He died April 30, 1982 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City at the age of 88.

Matheny was a life-long resident of the Russell Springs community except for the few years he spent in Wallace county, Colorado and Nebraska.

At an early age, he moved with his parents to Nebraska but returned to the Matheny homestead at the age of nine. There he grew to manhood. He and his foather operated a blacksmith shop in Russell Springs.

He was married to Flora Bell Haddock on Oct. 8, 1916. To this union were born four children - Mildred, Guy, Delmonte and Alberta.

Matheny became the postmaster of Russell Springs in 1942 and served in that capacity until he retired in 1963. He served a number of years as mayor of Russell springs and was also on the school board.

"Slim," as many of his friends called him, enjoyed a variety of games and sports. As a young man, he played on the russell Springs baseball team and later managed it. He was an avid fisherman until failing health prevented him from pursuing this hobby.

Matheny is survived by one son, Dr. William Guy Matheny, Fort Worth, Texas; three daughters, Mildred Tucker and Alberta Radnor, both of Scott City, and Avis Matheny of California; one brother, Shannon Matheny, Sun City, Ariz.; two sisters, Alta Boyd, Hebron, Neb., and Iva Trompeter, Oakley; 10 grandchildren and 16 greatgrandchildren. SEE, BASIL HOWARD

OAKLEY, KS – Basil Howard See, 87, died April 30, 1999, at Oakley.

He was born Nov. 4, 1911, in Scott County, the son of Irvin Henry and Lottie Ryan See. A resident of Oakley since 1980, he grew up in Manning, and had formerly lived in Scott County as a farmer. He was 30-year resident of Grandview, Mo., where he was a school custodian.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Oakley and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels at the Senior Citizens Center.

In 1940 he married Madge Hall. She died in 1978. On Sept. 27, 1980, he married Lidwina Marie Rome at Kansas City, Kan. She survives.

Other survivors include: two brothers, Russell, Mt. Vernon, Mo., and Walter, Scott City; four sisters, Hazel Eikermann, Flagler, Colo., Dorothy Patton and Pearl Strickert, both of Scott City, and Lorena Turley, Modoc; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; Leslie; a brother, Earnest; and two sisters, May Fick and Fern Kiser.

Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, Oakley. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic church, Oakley, with Frs. Roger K. Meitl and August Moeder presiding. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Scott City Cemetery at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

SMITH, CHARLES NICHOLAS

Charles N. Smith, 85, of Russell Springs, died Sunday, May 21, 2006, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Dec. 3, 1920, in Longmont, Colo., to John L. and Caroline D. Kohl Smith.

A farmer and rancher, Mr. Smith had been a lifetime resident of Russell Springs. He had served as mayor of Russell Springs, was director of the Butterfield Trail Association, was a former member of the Russell Springs Township Board and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

On Aug. 10, 1943, he married Gladys Bush in Dighton. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Robert E. Smith of Garden City; two daughters, Sandra Haile of Las Vegas, and Deborah Case of Leoti; two sisters, Alma Johnson of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Mae Shackelton of Beloit; nine grandchildren; and 17 greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, James L., Bobby and Nephi Smith; and a sister, Vera Thompson.

Funeral will be 2 p.. Thursday at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, 217 Freeman in Oakley, with the Rev. Don Martin officiating. Burial will be in Russell Springs Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the U.S. Army Post from Fort Riley and the Oakley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2961.

SMITH, GLADYS ALVINA (BUSH)

Gladys A. Smith, 85, died Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at her home in Russell Springs.

She was born Sept. 9, 1923, in Leoti, to Carl A. and Alta (McKinstry) Bush.

A lifetime resident Russell Springs, Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a farmer. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Butterfield Trail Association.

On Aug. 10, 1943, she married Charles N. Smith in Dighton. He died in 2006. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Eugene Bush; and three sisters, Bertha Snyder, Irene Blau and Anna Volkman.

Survivors include a son, Robert Smith of Garden City; two daughters, Sandra Haile of Las Vegas, and Deborah Case of Leoti; a nephew, Bob Cook of Cornville, Ariz., whom she and her husband raised; three sisters, Gertrude Shelton of Russell Springs, Eva Jean Berges of Ovid, Colo., and Billy McWilliams of Monks' Corner, S.C.; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, 217 Freeman in Oakley, with the Rev. Don Martin officiating. Burial will be in Russell Springs Cemetery.

SMITH, URIAH (TUX)

Uriah (Tux) Smith was born in Norton County, Kans., Oct. 2, 1900, and died at the Good Samaritan Center in Colby, Kans., April 29, 1977.

He was the sixth child of Charles and Rmelda Smith. He moved with his parents from Norton County to Logan County in 1905 where his parents homesteaded southeast of Russell Springs. Tux bought the home place from his mother in 1947 where he and his wife Pearl resided until 1967, when they moved to Oakley. Mr. Smith was united in marriage to Pearl Overholt Jan. 30, 1945.

He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, John and Frank and one sister, Emaline Davis. Three sisters died in infancy.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl of the home, a brother, Edwin, Pueblo, Colo., and three sisters, Lottie Seley, LaJunta, Colo., June Headley, Colby, Kans., and Betty Davis, Woodland Park, Colo. Also, nieces, nephews and stepchildren.

Services were held May 2 at 2 p.m. at the Koster Funeral Home, Oakley, with the Rev. O.M. Allen officiating. Burial was in the Winona cemetery. (Oakley Graphic, April 1977, submitted by Peggy Jean Smith)
