BAIN, DAUGHTER OF JOHN BAIN

The 10-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bain died Saturday morning. The funeral was held at the Colored Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment was made in Maplewood.

BAKER, ALDEN A.

ALDEN A. BAKER

A. A. Baker, a former Emporian and one of the wealthiest men in Kansas City, died Monday morning of paralysis. Mr. BAker was a member of the Ridenour-Baker Grocery Company, of Kansas City. He was in business her ten years when that company had a house here. In the early days. He leaves a wife and one daughter, Miss Stella, who have often visited here. The funeral was held Wednesday.

FUNERAL OF BERT BENNETT

The funeral of Albert Bennett was held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Bennett home on Neosho street. The body was brought here by his wife and his mother. The services were conducted by Rev. W. C. Madison. The pall bearers were Justin Soden, Jas. Thompson, Jas. Griffith, Marsh Warren and E. W. and W. L. Smelser. Interment was made at Maplewood.

BERNHARDT, GEORGE F. -

George F. Bernhardt, 85, Leavenworth, Kan., died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the home. Mr. Bernhardt was born Jan. 5, 1914, the third child of four born to Frederick and Josie Bernhardt.

Following his graduation from Tonganoxie High School in 1931, he attended Emporia State Teacher's College in Emporia, Kan. He taught school for two years in Reno, Kan. In 1935, he went to work for the Tonganoxie State Bank.

The following year he went to work at the Leavenworth Savings and Trust Company. Mr. Bernhardt then embarked on his life-long career in real estate, insurance and banking which culminated in the opening of The Bernhardt Agency in the mid 1940s.

He served as a radio operator in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. He married Margaret Hampel of Leavenworth on June 29, 1939, a marriage of 48 years which ended with her death in 1987. They were proud parents of two children, Gary and Janice.

Mr. Bernhardt was married on Dec. 29, 1989, to Dorothy Shalkoski.

Mr. Bernhardt served the Leavenworth Community faithfully for many years. He served as first chairman of the Leavenworth County Planning Commission, the first chairman of the Leavenworth County Regional Planning Commission, Chairman of the Federal Building/Post Office Committee, and was a member and Past President of the Present Leavenworth Country Club, which was built in 1960.

Mr. Bernhardt served on the Board of Trustees for Cushing Memorial Hospital for more than 30 years, including time spent as chairman. He also spent 36 years as a member of the Board of Directors at the Leavenworth National Bank, which also included time spent as chairman of the board. He served as president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Hotel Cody Building committee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Josie Bernhardt; his brother Glen; sister Gladys; wife Margaret, and niece Shirley Givens.

He leaves his wife, Dorothy of the home; his daughter, Janice Bernhardt of Tonganoxie; his son, Dr. Gary Bernhardt, and his wife Nancy of Overland Park, Kan.; and step -daughter Sue Ann Shalkoski of Eagan, Minn.
He also leaves his step-son Vic Shalkoski of Overland Park, Kan.; three grandchildren, Kelli, Scott and Gabe; his sister, Mary Katherine Peterson of Seattle, Wash., several nieces and nephews, and countless friends and neighbors. We love and miss you George, take care.

Funeral services were held Oct. 15 at the First Presbyterian Church, Leavenworth, Kan. The Rev. Tim Doty officiated. Burial followed in the Mt. Muncie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Cushing Memorial Hospital or Kansas City Hospice. Davis Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements. (The Toganoxie Mirror, October 27, 1999)

BLANKENSHIP, TYLAR LEA

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated this morning for Tylar Lea Blankenship, 17, who died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Midland Hospice.
Cremation followed the mass, which was held at Mater Dei’s Holy Name Church in Topeka.
Tylar Lea Blankenship was born Sept. 14, 1990, in Topeka. Among her survivors is a grandfather, Dean Judson of Emporia.
Other survivors are her parents, Flint and Rose Mary Blankenship of the home; a grandfather, Bill McMurphy of Sabetha; her biological parents, Mark Harvey of Osage City and Jodi Judson McCubbin of Sabetha; four sisters, TaBetha and TeAira Harvey of Sabetha, Taygon Stinnett of Kincaid, and Tanneil Harvey of Osage City; and a grandmother, Ann Moench of Hurley, Mo.
A sister, Heather Blankenship, died July 30, 2006.

MRS. LURA A. BRADLEY DEAD

Mrs. Lura A. Bradley died yesterday morning at 6 o'clock, after a three days' sickness at her home, 828 Merchant Street. Lura A. Southworth was born in 1837 at Bridgewater, N. Y. She was married to W. H. Bradley and came to Kansas in 1882, settling in Emporia, where she lived until her death. Mr. Bradley died May 4, 1903. Mrs. Bradley is survived by two daughters, Carrie Fay Bradley, of Emporia, and Mrs. Edwin S. Bower, of Lincoln, Kan., and a son, W. H. Bradley, of Loda, Ill. Mrs. Bradley was a member of the First Congregational church.

The funeral will be held at the Bradley home tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. Mrs. Bradley's pastor, The Rev. J. H. Rice, will conduct the service sand interment will be in Maplewood.

BURKHART, BARBARA D. "GINA"

Burkhart, Barbara D. "Gina"  Former Emporia resident Barbara D. “Gina” Burkhart died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, at her home in Edgerton. She was 77. Mrs. Burkhart was a service representative for Contel Telephone Company in Gardner for 15 years before she retired in 1989. Earlier, she cleaned houses and provided child care. The daughter of Raymond A. and Marjory McKinney Jones, she was born June 14, 1929, at Topeka. She lived in Topeka before she moved to Emporia where she attended school. She married Marion Torrens in 1949 and they later divorced. She married Daryel D. Burkhart on Nov. 23, 1957, at Miami, Okla. He died in 2002. They moved from Hillsdale to Gardner in 1964. Mrs. Burkhart attended Gardner Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons, Dennis Torrens and Leonard Torrens, both of Emporia, and Walt Burkhart of Gardner; two daughters, Denise Hughes of Olathe and Michelle Reed of Edgerton; eight siblings; and seven grandchildren. Four sisters, Nancy, Leona, Dorothy and Ruth, died earlier. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Bruce Funeral Home at Gardner. Burial will be in Gardner Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions to Olathe Hospice may be sent in care of the funeral home, 106 S. Center, P.O. BERDEN, SOPHIA

Mrs. Sophia Berden, wife of J. B. Berden, died Monday at 1 o'clock at the Berden home six miles southeast of Emporia on the Hartford road. She was 56 years old and leaves besides her husband one son, Roy W. Mrs. Berden has lived twenty-three years in the home in which she died. She was a member of the Baptist church.

BRATT, JAMES (MRS.)

The funeral for Mrs. James Bratt was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Grace Methodist church. Rev. Bamsburg conducted the services and interment was made in Maplewood cemetery.

Mrs. Bratt died last Sunday. She was born in Delaware county, New York, in 1841. Her parents were Orlando and Nancy Hale. She was married to James Bratt in 1859. The following year they moved to Wisconsin and from Wisconsin to Kansas, where they have made their home for the past twenty-seven years. The following children survive her: Edwardeau Bodine, Maude Girth, Bessie Evans, Henry Bratt, Blanche Seno, Richard Bratt, Jessie Evans and James Bratt. She had a great many friends and their kindness to the time of sorrow the family expresses thanks.

BENTHIEN, MRS. GEORGE

MRS. GEORGE BENTHIEN DEAD

Mrs. George Benthien, aged 81 years, died Monday at the Benthien home on the corner of Kansas avenue and East street. The Benthiens came to Emporia from Michigan in the fall of 1879, and have lived here ever since. Mr. Benthien has been a tailor in Emporia for the past twenty-seven years.

Mrs. Benthien leaves a husband, George Benthien, six children, three sons and three daughters. The children are Mrs. Amelia Hoffman, of Albuquerque, N. M., Mrs. Marg Schiller, of Oxford, Mich.; Mrs. Edith North, Wymore, Nebr.; Lewis A. Benthien, Charles Benthien and William Benthien, of Emporia.

Rev. J. H. J. Rice conducted the funeral services at the house Tuesday at 2 o'clock and the interment was made in Maplewood.

MRS. ELIZABETH BALDWIN DEAD

Mrs. Elizabeth Baldwin, who, it is supposed, was the oldest woman in Lyon county, died Saturday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Swink, at Neosho Rapids. Mrs. Baldwin was 99 years of age last April. About a month ago her daughter noticed that she was beginning to fail in health. A few months ago a family reunion was held at the Swink home, at which five generations were present, Mrs. Baldwin being the oldest person who was present. Mrs. Swink, who is 73 years of age, is her only living child. Mrs. Baldwin was born in Dexter, Me., where she was brought up. From Maine her parents went to Pennsylvania where her husband died about thirty-two yearsw ago.

FUNERAL OF R. E. BROWN

The funeral of R. E. Brown will be held tomorrow at 2 o'clock from the Wigwam. The body will be taken from the house at 1 o'clock to the Wigwam, where the services will be conducted by the Emporia order of Red Men. Mr. Brown had been a member of this organization for forty years.

Mr. Brown is survived by four sons. One of the sons, Joh, was with his father when he died. He was about 68 years old. For many years he tilled a small farm near the junction of the Cottonwood and Neosho rivers. Sixteen years ago he moved to town, and since then has lived in a little house belonging to him at 17 Mulberry street.

"Dad" Brown, as he was familiarly called, was a kind, gentle and patient man, loved by all who knew him. Up until his last period of illness he took an active interest in the affairs of his lodge, and was one of its most loyal members.

BRISLEN, MARY

MRS. MARY BRISLEN DEAD

Mrs. Mary Brislen died last evening at her home, eight miles northwest of town, from injuries received from a fall the night before. Accidentally falling she broke a leg, and, being 89 years old, she did not rally from the shock of the accident.

Mrs. Brislen was born in Campbellton, Scotland, May 29, 1820. She came in this country forty years ago, and for thirty-three years had lived in Kansas. Eight children were born to her and her husband, who died before she left Scotland, and of these, four survive. They are Neal, Thomas, Alec, and Annie. The last named three lived with their mother, and Neal has a farm near here. Mrs. Brislen was the grandmother of Robert Austin and Mrs. John Bostwick, of Topeka, and Mrs. Eliphalet Swan, of Beloit, all of whom arrived this afternoon. Mrs. Brislen was a life-long member of the Presbyterian church.

The funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. The interment will be in Maplewood. Rev. S. L. Grigsby will conduct the funeral services.

BOWERS, VIRGIL

Virgil Bowers, the 3-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Bowers, of 323 East Street, died Saturday night. The funeral services were held at the grave at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery.
