Services for Ruby M. Harper, 78, Hartford, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Hartford Christian Church
with the Rev. Mike Graham officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery at Neosho Rapids.
Mrs. Harper died Tuesday, July 21, 1992, at the Madonna Nursing Home in Lincoln, Neb.
She was born Oct. 9, 1913, in Gilstrap, Ky., to Lafe and Jesse Benton James. She moved to Hartford from Lawrence
in 1969 and was active in the Hartford Senior Citizens Group.
She married William T. Harper on April 5, 1934, in Lawrence. He died Oct. 1, 1985.
Survivors include two sons, Donald E., Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Robert D., Lincoln, Neb.; a sister, Lena Overbaugh,
Lawrence; and four grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Jones Funeral Home in Lebo. The family suggests memorials

WICHITA --- Thomas Warren Kemp, 81, Wichita, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, in Wichita.
Mr. Kemp was a retired teacher and coach. He taught history, government, economics and drivers education at Wichita
West High School, Alta Vista and Osage City. He also coached baseball at Wichita West and basketball at Alta Vista.
Survivors include two sisters, Esther DeRemer, Emporia, and Frances Rees, Castle Rock, Colo.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Cochran Mortuary in Wichita. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday
at Mount Hope Cemetery at Neosho Rapids.

PHILLIPS, WILLIAM F.
William F. Phillips, 69, a lifetime resident of Neosho Rapids, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Jones Health
Care at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor.
Mr. Phillips farmed in the Lyon County area for most of his life. He also operated a road grader for Lyon County
Road & Bridge Department for 39 years until he retired in the late 1990s. He continued to work for the city
of Neosho Rapids in street and lagoon maintenance.
The son of William N. and Eva Verlin Phillips, he was born July 24, 1935, at Neosho Rapids. He graduated from Neosho
Rapids High School in 1953.
He married Alma Lee Mitchell on March 24, 1971, at Ottawa. She survives.
Mr. Phillips was a member of the Neosho Rapids Memorial United Methodist Church and the Hardee's coffee club in
Emporia.
He is also survived by five stepsons, Steven Merwin and Robert Merwin, both of Emporia, Roy Dale Merwin of Washington
state, Jeff Merwin of Utah and Danny Weymouth of Virginia Beach, Va.; three stepdaughters, Ruth Ann of Cascade
Locks, Ore., Debbie Merwin of Stockton, Calif., and Janie Merwin of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four sisters, Toots
Heckathorn, Leona Boosinger, Rachel LeFord and Mary Besack, all of Neosho Rapids; 16 stepgrandchildren; and eight
stepgreat-grandchildren.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Neosho Rapids United Methodist Church, where the family will meet
friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Mr. Phillips has been cremated.

RHOADS, DORA ELIZABETH
The service for former Neosho Rapids resident Dora Elizabeth Rhoads, 88, of Emporia will be at 1 p.m. Friday
in Mount Hope Cemetery at Neosho Rapids. The Rev. James Scott of the Cornerstone Baptist Church will conduct the
service. Mrs. Rhoads has been cremated.

Mrs. Rhoads died Monday, June 21, 2004, at the Holiday Resort.
She was a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital for many years before she retired.
The daughter of Jacob Edward and Tabitha Elizabeth Newman Gayer, she was born Jan. 16, 1916, in Cottonwood Falls.
She married Curtis Thaine Rhoads on Sept. 2, 1936, at Cottonwood Falls. He died March 27, 1983.
Mrs. Rhoads was a Baptist.
She is survived by a daughter, Bonita M. Albin of Emporia; two sons, Eugene A. Rhoads of Emporia and Joseph "Edward"
Rhoads of Neosho Rapids; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Lilly Elizabeth Rhoads, died earlier, as did one sister, one brother, one half brother, three half
sisters and two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Janice Rhoads.

Mr. Schemm died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at Newman Regional Health. He was 86.
He was a farmer.
The son of George and Frieda Schneck Schemm, he was born July 22, 1921, at Wakeeney. He graduated from Neosho High
School in 1938. After high school, he served in the Air Force as a flight engineer with the 32nd Bomb Squadron,
301st Bomb Group.
He married Dena Fern Juyett. They were divorced. He married Mary Jane Andrews on Jan. 22, 1972, at Emporia. She
survives.
Mr. Schem was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. He also was a member of the American Legion.
He is also survived by one daughter, Pamela Matlock of Lebo; one son, Ronald Schemm of Emporia; one stepdaughter,
Karla Textor of Emporia; three stepsons, Terry Schemm of Neosho Rapids, John Schemm of Philadelphia, Pa., and Michael
Schemm of Evansville, Ind.; two sisters, Dorothy Kramer of Neosho Rapids and Gertrude Ellen Ashcraft of Boulder,
Colo.; many grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. A daughter, Patricia Zirkle; two brothers, Raymond
Carl Schemm and Arnold H. Schemm; and a stepgrandson, Troy Schemm, died earlier.

Ms. Headley died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, at the Holiday Resort, where she was a resident. She was 96.
She retired from the sanitation staff at Newman Regional Health.
The daughter of Warren V. and Alta May Newman Best, she was born May 24, 1911, at Reading. She was married and
divorced.
Ms. Headley is survived by four daughters, Judy Rice and Mary Jane Blow, both of Emporia, Pat Noble of Osage City
and Shirley Evert of Aurora, Colo.; five sons, Jack Blow of Topeka, Donald Blow of Clare, Mich., Ray Blow and Harry
Blow Jr., both of Nixa, Mo., and James Blow of Ronan, Mont.; 17 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. A
son, Roy Blow; two stepsons, Ernest Robert Blow and Nelson Blow; two brothers, Bud Best and Bill Best; and three
sisters, Charlotte Price, Jane Nelson and Gladys Jones, died earlier.

Services for the Rev. Frank Eugene Schlageter, 56, Topeka, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Parker-Price Mortuary
in Topeka. Graveside services and burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Reading Cemetery, Reading.
The Rev. Schlageter died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1993, at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka.
He was born Sept. 1, 1936, in Lyndon, to Frank Henry and Ruth Hazel Sowell Schlageter.
The Rev. Schlageter helped start many small churches in several cities, including Emporia, Holton, Bend, Ore.,
and Sheridan, Wyo. He also worked at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center, where he retired in 1992 due to his
health. He was a member of East Side Baptist Church.
The Rev. Schlageter married Virginia E. Williams on May 27, 1955, in Emporia. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, David E., Emporia; two daughters, Teresa Lynn Biesiada and Jane E. Schlageter, both
of Wichita; a stepmother, Thelma Schlageter, Emporia; two sisters, Doris Rowlands, Lawrence; Alice St. John, Emporia;
a half-sister, Frances Green, Pine Bluff, Ark.; a stepbrother, Bill VerBrugge, of Colorado; four stepsisters, Linda
Smith, Dorothy Frost and Arlene Leuszler, all of Topeka; Carol Swint, Emporia; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Alan, who died July 27, 1987.
Friends may call after 8 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8
p.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Schlobohm died Monday, June 1, 1992, in an Arkansas hospital. She was born Dec. 13, 1917, in Gage, Okla.,
the daughter of John and Rosa Seeliger.
She received a bachelor's degree in music from Bethany College in Lindsborg in 1940. She later received a specialist's
degree from the University of Colorado.
She had worked as a supervisor for the sheltered workshop at the Kansas Neurological Institute.
She married Nolan Schlobohm Dec. 22, 1946. He died March 28, 1986.
Survivors include two daughters, Marcia Clay, Topeka, and Deborah Sampson, Lawrence; a son, Mark Schlobohm, Topeka;
four grandchildren; and a sister.

Mrs. VanGundy died Monday, Nov. 13, 1995, at Chase County Nursing Center.
She was born May 14, 1891, in Reading, the daughter of James F. and Mahala A. Baysinger Clark.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship and the Forest Hill Extension
Unit, all in Emporia.
She married David VanGundy on March 8, 1911. He died July 5, 1945.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Nurnberg, Emporia, and Mahala True, Americus; a son, Wayne VanGundy, Americus;
a sister, Maude VanSickle, Topeka; 14 grandchildren, including Marlene VanGundy Penny, Lawrence; 35 great-grandchildren;
four great-great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son and daughter.

Mr. Whittington died Friday, April 3, 1998, at his home near Maple Hill.
He was born June 28, 1956, in Emporia, the son of Louis Benjamin and Gladys Wamser Whittington. He graduated from
Reading High School in 1974. He was a truck driver for Reading Grain and Lumber for several years before becoming
a substate rural mail carrier in Reading.
He was a member of the Reading United Methodist Church.
He married Janis L. Stephens in 1993. They divorced in 1998.
Survivors include his mother, Emporia; and three brothers, James Whittington, Emporia, Robert Whittington, Reading,
and Richard Whittington, Lawrence.

Mrs. Aguilar died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at her home in Emporia. She was 88.
She was a homemaker and also worked at the Meadows Nursing Home before she retired 35 years ago.
The daughter of Gil and Marcimiliana Saldana Solis, she was born Feb. 14, 1919, at Guadalajara, Mexico. She married
A.J. "Joe" Aguilar on July 29, 1933, at Topeka. He died Dec. 19, 2004, at Emporia.
Mrs. Aguilar was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church.
She is survived by four sons, Louis Aguilar Sr., Fred Aguilar Sr., and James Sparks, all of Emporia, and Wayne
Sparks of Ottawa; three daughters, Delores Torres of Emporia, Bonnie Hernandez of Hutchinson and Margaret Mendoza
of Rock Island, Ill.; one brother, Frutoso Solis of Emporia; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Esther Sparks; a brother, Aurelio Solis; and two sisters, Ignacia Sanchez and Elisia Gonzales, died
earlier.

BAYLESS, VIRGINIA BAYLESS
Virginia Adeline Bayless died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at Newman Regional Health, Emporia. Mrs. Bayless, a
homemaker, was 79.
The funeral is planned for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Darren Henson will officiate.

The daughter of Ernest Henry Dieker and Elizabeth C. Erpelding, she was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Olpe. She married
Clifford Myers on Jan. 26, 1945, in Emporia; he died July 7, 1967. She married George E. Bayless on May 21, 1970,
in Emporia; he died Feb. 29, 1984.
Mrs. Bayless is survived by a son, Larry Myers of Americus, and six daughters, Linda Collins and Tamie Vahsholtz,
both of Emporia; Sue Henry of Eureka Springs, Ark.; Mary Palmer of Topeka; Nancy Myers-Rhoads of Halstead; and
Gina Easley of Eagle Rock, Mo. A brother, Gilbert Dieker of Maize, also survives, as do three sisters, Arlene Shepard
of Emporia; Rita O'Conner of Bernice, Okla.; and Laverne Yocum of Wichita; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren;
and two great-great-grandchildren.
Two daughters, Shari and Carolyn Myers, died in infancy. A brother, Andrew Dieker, also died earlier, as did three
grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Mr. Becker died Tuesday at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He was born on July 3, 1907, in Brilon, Germany.
He was the founder of the Becker Corp. in Emporia. Mr. Becker was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and
the Knights of Columbus.
He married Hattie Nathe on Nov. 25, 1929, in St. Louis. She survives at the home.
Other survivors include two sons, Frank J., El Dorado, and Robert H., Wichita; two daughters, Betty L. Timmerman,
Albuquerque, N.M., and Margaret A. Jehle, Lawrence; two brothers, Al, Daytona Beach, Fla., and Robert, Brilon;

Mrs. Becker died Saturday, August 20, 1994, at her home.
She was born May 20, 1908, in Munster, Germany, the daughter of Joseph and Gertrude Bussman Ernstnathe.
She married Frank X. Becker on Nov. 25, 1929, at St. Louis. He died April 23, 1991.
Mrs. Becker was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its Altar Society, and was a former member of the
Sacred Heart School PTA, all in Emporia.
Survivors include two daughters, Marge A. Jehle, Lawrence, and Betty L. Timmerman, Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons,
Frank J. Becker, El Dorado, and Robert H. Becker, Wichita; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

COLUNGA, JAVIER "JAPO"
Javier "Japo" Colunga of Emporia died Friday, July 15, 2005, at the Holiday Resort. He was 32.
Mr. Colunga worked in the kitchen at Carlos O'Kelly's until he became disabled because of a stroke. He previously
was a meat processor for IBP (Tyson).
The son of Pedro and Rosario Bautista Colunga, he was born June 10, 1973, in Emporia.
Mr. Colunga was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He is survived by his father, who lives in Mexico; three brothers, Edwardo C. Bautista and Pedro Colunga Jr., both
of Emporia, and Alberto Colunga of Germany; and three sisters, Yvonne Colunga, Maria Landeros and Maria E. Saenz,
all of Emporia.
His mother and a sister, Carmella Colunga, died earlier.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Darren
Henson will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 7
p.m. Wednesday in Charter Funerals-Emporia Chapel.
The family suggests that, instead of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the church and sent in care of
the funeral home, 501 W. Sixth Ave., Emporia, KS 66801.

Dorothy Jackie Eastman of Emporia, formerly of Lawrence, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at Newman Regional
health. She was 91.
She was born May 16, 1916 in Lawrence, the daughter of Lothe and Marie Watts Sanders. She married Jack Eastman
on Nov. 3, 1933 in Lawrence. He died there on July 21, 1980.
Mrs. Eastman was a dental nurse in Lawrence for 30 years before her retirement 20 years ago. She moved to Emporia
in 1987.
In Emporia, she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Cox of Emporia; one sister, Millie Bowen of Prairie Village; two grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Loncar.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Darren Henson
of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

MYERS, RAYMOND S.
The burial service for Raymond S. Myers, 77, of Eureka will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Chicago Mound Cemetery.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Emporia.
Mr. Myers died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, in Angels Camp, Calif.
He was a bus driver for the Stockton Transit Authority in Stockton, Calif. He also worked for a bank and the American
Can Co., both in California. He moved to Eureka in 1990.
The son of Otis T. and Dolly Mae Dix Myers, he was born June 18, 1926, in Boise, Idaho. He lived in Topeka until
1931, then moved to Stockton, Calif., where he graduated from Stockton High School in 1944.
He married Marie Teasley on Aug. 8, 1953, in Stockton. She died earlier.
Mr. Myers was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses.
He is survived by two daughters, Kathy Ray of Emporia and Carol "Janie" Collins of Jackson, Tenn.; three
sons, Raymond "Gene" Myers of Jackson, Tenn., Michael Myers of Angels Camp, and Jonathan Myers of Stockton,
Calif.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Two brothers and one grandson died earlier.

TORRENS, MARION FRANCIS
Marion Francis Torrens, 1835 Road R, died Friday, Nov. 4, 2005, at the Holiday Resort. He was 77.
Mr. Torrens was a conductor with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, where he worked 42 years before
he retired in 1990. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 22, 1946 and served until Jan. 27, 1948.
The son of Leonard E. and Effie E. White Torrens, he was born Jan. 14, 1928, in Emporia. He graduated from Emporia
High School in 1945.
His first marriage, to Barbara Jones, ended in divorce. He married Shirley L. Schmidt on June 7, 1960, at St. Mark's
Lutheran Church. She died May 17, 1990. He married Carol Livingston. They also divorced.
Mr. Torrens was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2587 and the United Transport Union, both for 45 years;
a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Lowry-Funston Post 1980; and American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5 for 47
years.
He is survived by three sons, Leonard R. Torrens, Dennis L. Torrens and Marlan M. Torrens, all of Emporia; one
daughter, Sheila Palmer of Cashion, Okla; one brother, Floyd Torrens of Emporia; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter;
and his first wife, Barbara Jones Burkhart.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church. The Rev. Don Conrade of the church will
officiate. Burial, with military services conducted by a Fort Riley honor detail, will be in Chicago Mound Cemetery
near Emporia. The family will meet friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.

BRACK, FRED L.
Fred L. Brack, 72, died Monday, May 3, 2004, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Mr. Brack owned and operated Brack's Pest Control in Hartford. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, having
served from 1951 to 1953.
The son of Henry and Mary Brack, he was born Aug. 23, 1931, at Otis.
He married Virginia Surface on Dec. 4, 1954, at Great Bend. They were divorced.
Mr. Brack is survived by a son, Terry Brack of Lebo; two daughters, Pamela Landis of Hartford and Debra Jones of
Branson, Mo.; six grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Nine brothers and four sisters died earlier.
There will be a private family service.
All Faiths Funeral Services in Wichita has the arrangements.

EMPORIA --- Richard Dwayne Burden, 66, Emporia, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at an Emporia hospital.
Mr. Burden was a welder for Sauder Tank in Emporia for more than 30 years. He retired in 1997. He was an air force
veteran.
He was born July 30, 1935, at Emporia, the son of Howard and Doris Marie Varelman Burden.
He married Alva J. Schaefer on Aug. 8, 1957, in Emporia. She survives.
Survivors include a daughter, Becky Peres, Emporia; three sisters, Jeanetta Alvarado, Wichita, and Vera Mason and
Bary Besack, both of Allen; and a grandson.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. Interment will be at
Chicago Mound Cemetery in Emporia. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Military graveside
services will be done by Lowry-Funston post No. 1980, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ball-McColm Post No. 5, American
Legion, both of Emporia.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mound Ridge Community Center, sent in care of the funeral home.
