Nevitt, George A., 86, retired J.B. Ehrsam Company, Enterprise, welder, died Saturday, May 17, 1997. Service 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Cottonwood Cemetery, Emporia.

NORTON, LEWIS "LOUIE"

Lewis "Louie" C. Norton
, 81, of Emporia died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka.

Mr. Norton worked in sales at Bluestem Farm & Ranch Supply before he retired. He was a veteran of World War II.

The son of Archie J. and Joanna Hooper Norton, he was born Feb. 14, 1923, in Hartford. He married Betty J. Jeanneret on May 15, 1948, at Grace United Methodist Church. She survives.

Mr. Norton was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was a Mason and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is also survived by two sons, Norman Norton of Emporia and James of Upland; one brother, William Norton of Madison; a sister, Hartsel Storrer of Madison; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Jeane, and a grandson, Levi Norton, died earlier.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Charter Funerals-Emporia Chapel. The Rev. Mic McGuire will conduct the service. Burial, with Masonic services and services conducted by American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5 and Veterans of Foreign Affairs Lowry-Funston Post 1980, will be in Cottonwood Cemetery, west of Emporia.

The family suggests that, instead of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Emporia Friends of the Zoo or American Legion Post 5 and sent in care of the funeral home, 501 W. Sixth Ave., Emporia, KS 66801.

PHILLIPS, TRACY RENEE

The funeral for
Tracy Renee Phillips, 25, who died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, in a traffic accident in Geary County, has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyle Williams of the First Baptist Church in Reading will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery, west of Emporia.

The family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ms. Phillips, the daughter of Randy Winn and Vicky V. Estabrooks Phillips, was born Dec. 4, 1978, in Emporia. She was a nursing student and worked as a certified nurses' aide.

She is survived by a son, Darion Winn Phillips, and her mother, both at home; her stepfather, Steve Eckman of Emporia; two brothers, Rick Estabrooks of Americus and Ryan Phillips of Osage City; and a grandmother, Velda Parker of Howard.

Her father died earlier.

SMITH, RICHARD "RICKY" WARD

EMPORIA --- Richard "Ricky" Ward Smith, 33, Emporia, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Smith had work at the east Hardee's in Emporia since high school.

He was born Aug. 18, 1968, at Emporia, the son of Harold Edward and Florence Margaret Donovan Smith. He graduated from Emporia High School in 1987 and had lived at Emporia his entire life.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Emporia Model Railroad Club. He attended activities at the Baptist Student Union.

Survivors include his step-father, David Bryan, Emporia; two sisters, Tammy Davisson, Emporia, and Brenda Heine, Austin, Minn.; and maternal grandmother, Margaret Donovan, Emporia.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Cottonwood Cemetery, west of Emporia. Friends may visit from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Carlson Chapel, Emporia.

VANSICKLE, RALPH EDWARD

The family of Ralph Edward VanSickle will meet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. VanSickle of rural Emporia died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007 at Newman Regional Health. He was 82.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Charity Sandstrom and Galen Hinshaw will conduct the service, assisted by Mr. VanSickle's grandson the Rev. Brent VanSickle and the Revs. Tomas Martinez and Richard Buck. Burial will be in the Cottonwood Friends Cemetery .

An entrepreneur, Mr. VanSickle was a realtor and auctioneer for almost 40 years and a dairyman and rancher in his early years.Ê He pioneered the auction method of selling real estate in Lyon County and mentored several young people to help them learn the auction business.Ê

The son of Leroy and Bertha Smith VanSickle, he was born Feb. 18, 1925, in rural Emporia. He married Grace Eileen Schwindt on May 5, 1946, at Ebenezer Evangelical Church west of Olpe.

Mr. VanSickle was a lifelong member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) Church and a member and elder of Emporia Friends Church. While living in the communities, he was a member of Cottonwood Friends Church and Twin Mound Friends Church, where he served as treasurer for many years along with serving on other committees in the church, Cottonwood Quarterly Meeting, Area Meeting and Yearly Meeting. He was a longtime member of the Emporia chapter of Gideons International.

He was president of the Emporia Realtors Association and named Realtor of the Year and was president of the Lyon County Historical Museum when the museum raised funds to move into the old Carnegie Library on Sixth Avenue.

Mr. VanSickle was a former member of the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Kansas and National Realtors and Auctioneers Associations. He served as community leader and tractor leader for the Sunnyside 4-H and was a member of the 4-H Alumni Association, Emporia Masonic Lodge and volunteered as a greeter at Newman Regional Health.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, one son, Ray D. VanSickle of Newton; two daughters, Carol Schaefer of Emporia and Joan VanSickle Sloan of Maryville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, David Sloan of Maryville, Tenn., Nathan Sloan of Seymour, Tenn., Melodi Wood of Ringgold, La., Lisa Smallwood of Tulsa, Okla., Brent VanSickle of Alton, Ill., and Andrea Bazan of Red Oak, Texas; and one great grandson, Schaefer McKee Smallwood of Tulsa; one brother, Raymond L. VanSickle of Emporia; two sisters, Evelyn Frazier of Emporia and Elsie Adams of Olathe.

A sister, Esther Rich, died earlier.

VERMILLION, HELEN

Services for Helen Vermillion, 70, Emporia, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery west of Emporia.

Mrs. Vermillion died Sunday at a Topeka hospital.

She was born Dec. 31, 1920, in Emporia. She was a former nurses' aide at nursing homes in Emporia, Lawrence and California.

She married Wayne M. Vermillion on Dec. 31, 1937, in Council Grove. He died Nov. 2, 1969.

Survivors include five daughters, Donna Roubison and Waynet Brower, both of Lawrence, Anita Stevens, Emporia, Helen Ray Grafmyre, Lynden, Wash., and Sue Ann Vermillion, Coolidge, Ariz.; a sister, Dorothy Lane, Avon Park, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the Meals-On-Wheels program in Emporia.

WHITE, ZELMA HELEN

Zelma Helen White died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, at the Flint Hills Care Center, where she was a resident. She was 91.

Mrs. White, a homemaker, worked for three years as a nurses aide at Newman Memorial Hospital until 1950. She moved to Emporia in 1938.

The daughter of Loyd and Lora Bell Anderson Pitts, she was born Dec. 12, 1915, in Centerville, Iowa. She married Thomas V. Rees on June 3, 1964, in Emporia. He died Aug. 8, 1969, in Emporia. She married Commodore C. White in November 1972 in Emporia. He died Nov. 25, 2000, in Burlingame.

Mrs. White is survived by a cousin, LoraDell "Dixie" Thomas of Emporia.

A brother, Claude Pitts, died earlier.

The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Cottonwood Cemetery, west of Emporia. The Rev. Claudia Bakely of the First United Methodist Church will conduct the service.

Robert A. "Bob" Wiley, 62, of Wichita died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004.

Mr. Wiley worked at Didde Web Press in Emporia and later was project manager at Raytheon Facilities before he retired.

He was the son of the late H.H. "Bus" and Laura Wiley.

Mr. Riley is survived by his wife of 43 years, Karen A. Pennebaker Wiley; a daughter, Dana DeVries of Allen; a son, Scott Wiley of Eudora; and five grandchildren.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in College Hill United Methodist Church. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m in Cottonwood Cemetery, west of Emporia.

BRYAN, DAVID L.

David L. Bryan, formerly of 10 S. Neosho St., died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at the Flint Hills Care Center.

Mr. Bryan worked for the City of Emporia Transfer Department from April 1981 to April 2001.

The son of Vera Robinson, he was born Oct. 10, 1938. He married Florence Smith on Nov. 9, 2000. She died Jan. 1, 2001, at Emporia.

Mr. Bryan was a member of the West Side Baptist Church.

He is survived by two sisters, names and addresses unavailable. A stepson, Richard W. "Ricky" Smith died Nov. 6, 2001.

The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the West Side Baptist Church. Ken Armstrong will conduct the service. Mr. Bryan was cremated. Burial will be at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery.

BURDEN, WILLIAM GLEN

William Glen Burden
died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, at his home in rural Emporia. He was 60.

Mr. Burden was taught industrial arts at De Soto High School for 13 years before he retired in 2004.

The son of William C. and Geraldine Glenn Burden, he was born Dec. 27, 1944, in Emporia. Two marriages, to Karen Welch and to Sondra Center, ended in divorce.

Mr. Burden was a member of the National Education Association and several other professional groups and organizations.

He is survived by three daughters, Caroly Jo Burden of Overland Park, Glenna Armbrust of Hutchinson and Jerrie Kroeker of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; one son, Brent Burden of Emporia; his parents of Emporia; two brothers, Virgil Burden of Olathe and Leonard Burden of Kansas City, Kan.; two grandchildren; and his former wives, Karen Wingfield of Hutchinson and Sondra Burden of Emporia.

The funeral was Tuesday in the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home chapel. Lee Hoskins of the First United Methodist Church conducted the service. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, south of Emporia.

EDWARDS, LAURA RUFENA

Laura Rufena Edwards
will be buried in Evergreen Cemetery of Emporia, where a funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday; the Rev. Norbert Tegtmeier of Messiah Lutheran Church will officiate.

Mrs. Edwards, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Emporia Rehabilitation Center. She was a homemaker.

She was born to John and Nettie Rathke on Sept. 10, 1915, in Olpe. She married Charles Edwards in 1943 at Messiah Lutheran Church; they were later divorced.

Her survivors include a daughter, Carrie Jean Heinbaugh of McConnellsburg, Pa., and a brother, Leo Rathke of Emporia.

Three brothers, Edward Rathke, John Rathke and Oscar "Al" Rathke, and one sister, Ruth Borkth, died earlier.

She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church.

Lorene Mae Holcomb, 83, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at her home in Manhattan.

The daughter of John and Linnie Hunter Heckathorn, she was born Feb. 3, 1920, in Emporia. She married Roy Holcomb on June 26, 1938, in Cottonwood Falls. He died April 5, 1989.

Mrs. Holcomb, a homemaker, was a clerk for the Dollar General Store and for a children's clothing store in Emporia. Five years ago, she moved to Manhattan to live with her daughter.

Mrs. Holcomb is survived by a son, Gary Holcomb of Neosho Rapids; a daughter, Cheryl Countryman of Manhattan; six grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 14 stepgreat-grandchildren.

A son, Phillip Holcomb; five brothers, Clark Heckathorn, Elmer Heckathorn, Russell Heckathorn, Milton Heckathorn and Clyde Heckathorn; and two sisters, Opal Whaley and Ogal Scheck, died earlier.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall at Manhattan. Robert Bliven will officiate. The burial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Evergreen Cemetery, south of Emporia.

EMPORIA --- Services will be at 11 a.m., Jan. 28, at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia for David Lee Jones, 79, Emporia, who died Jan. 2, 2002, at a Topeka hospital.

He was born Sept. 12, 1922, in Emporia, to Chester L. and Floy Virginia Shirky Jones. He was a farmer.

He served in the Army during World War II.

He was a former member of Twin Mounds Friends Church south of Emporia and attended First Friends Church in Emporia. He was a member of Ball-McColm Post No. 5 of the American Legion in Emporia for 48 years and a member of Lowry-Funston Post No. 1980 of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Emporia.

He married Lorraine Davis in November 1978 in Severy. She survives.

Other survivors include a stepson, Robert Nevil, South Bend, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Judy Michaels, Rose Hill; and a brother, John H. Jones, Arlington, Texas.

Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion will conduct graveside services at Evergreen Cemetery south of Emporia.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association of South Central Kansas and sent in care of the funeral home.

NICHOLAS, HULDA MARIE


Hulda Marie Nicholas
, formerly of Emporia, died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005, at her home in Wichita. She was 101.

Mrs. Nicholas was a homemaker.

She was born on Jan. 14, 1904, in Elmdale, the daughter of Fredrick William and Hulda (Pockrant) Imm.

She married Clarence A. Nicholas on March 21, 1925, in Emporia. He preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 1977. She also was preceded in death by a son, the Rev. William "Bill" L. Nicholas; a grandson, Benjamin Nicholas; one brother; and four sisters.

Surivors include a daughter, Alberta Kroeker of Wichita; a sister, Elsie Austrup, of Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Nicholas was a member of First Congregational Church, First Congregational Women's Circle and many card parties.

The service and burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery. The Rev. Chad Poland will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.

SAN ROMANI, EGIDEO PERRY "BUD"

Egideo Perry "Bud" San Romani will be buried at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery, south of Emporia. Mr. San Romani, who died Friday, Oct. 28, 2005, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, will be cremated. He was 86.

Harvey Foyle of Emporia will preside at the service.

The son of Egideo Germano and Coltilda Turigliatto San Romani, he was born Nov. 2, 1918, in Frontenac. He graduated from Frontenac High School in 1936 and from Emporia State University in 1941. He taught and coached basketball at Bushong High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1942.

He married Laura Elizabeth McColl on May 22, 1943, in Jacksonville, Fla. They were married 61 years at her death, on Nov. 17, 2004.

At the end of World War II, the San Romanis returned to Emporia, where they lived for the next 60 years. Mr. San Romani worked at Alspaw Jewelry, which he eventually owned, in partnership with Stuart Watson.

He is survived by three sons, David San Romani of Rose Hill, Danny San Romani of Topeka and Dennis San Romani of Kingman; a daughter, Debra San Romani of Bonner Springs; and a sister, Delida Price of Independence. Four grandchildren also survive.

In addition to his wife, his brother, Archie San Romani Sr., died earlier, as did two infant sisters, Barbara San Romani and Doris San Romani, and a stepgrandson, Justin Kent San Romani.

SHAW, EDWARD EVERETT

Edward Everett Shaw, formerly of 9 S. Mechanic St., died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at Alterra Sterling House, where he was a resident. He was 93.

Mr. Shaw was a welder at Didde-Glaser for 11 years before he retired 28 years ago. During World War II, he was a member of the State Guard.

The son of Edward and Emma Baber Shaw, he was born Feb. 8, 1912, in Olathe. He graduated from Lawrence High School.

He married Marjorie Emma Cummings on Oct. 30, 1938, in Moran. She died March 1, 2005, in Emporia.

Mr. Shaw was a member of the Flint Hills Beekeeper Association.

He is survived by two sons, James Edward Shaw of Olpe and John A. Shaw of Fort Scott; two brothers, Willard Shaw of Topeka and Clifford L. Shaw of Lawrence; a sister, Luella Strong of Bakersfield, Calif.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Three sisters, Mabel McNees, Helen Stanley and Opal Goodlove, died earlier.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Evergreen Cemetery, south of Emporia. Mr. Shaw has been cremated. The Rev. Don Barb of the Olpe United Methodist Church will conduct the service.

The daughter of Arthur and Grace Austin Cummings, she was born Oct. 7, 1914, at Clinton. She married Edward Everett Shaw on Oct. 30, 1939, at Moran. He survives.

Mrs. Shaw was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of the Cottonwood extension home unit and the auxiliary at Newman Regional Health.

She is also survived by two sons, James Edward Shaw of Olpe and John A. Shaw of Fort Scott; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A sister, Dorothy Day, died earlier.

STINER, LAURA L. SHIRLEY

Laura L. Shirley Stiner of Watertown, S.D., died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, in a Sioux Falls, S.D., hospital.

She was born Laura Lee Shirley to Vernon D. and Peggy L. Palmer Shirley on June 21, 1953, in Emporia. She married Robert Stiner on Aug. 1, 1970, in Emporia. In 1971, she graduated from Emporia High School. They moved to Watertown in 1983.

She was a member of A.B.A.T.E. motorcycle group.

She is survived by her husband and by three daughters, Nicki Halling and Christi Chaney, both of Watertown, and Shelly Randazzo of Seattle, Wash. Her father lives at Lake of the Ozarks, Mo. Also surviving are two brothers, Dean Shirley of Blaine, Minn., and Terry Shirley of Washington; two sisters, Johnnie Rae Lay and Jade Tucker of Sioux Falls; and eight grandchildren.

Her mother died earlier.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Christian Life Assembly of God Church in Watertown.

STINER, ROBERT RAYMOND

Former Emporian
Robert Raymond Stiner, 53, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, in St. Paul, Minn., of injuries from a house fire in Watertown, S.D.

The funeral, at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, will be conducted by the Rev. Joe Tuttle. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was born July 21, 1952, in Abilene, the son of Bob R. and Earldene Harrington Stiner. He was raised in Emporia and married Laura Lee Shirley on Aug. 1, 1970, in Emporia. She died Sept. 23, 2003.

Mr. Stiner served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 to 1981. He had worked as a hydraulic engineer since 1971.

In Emporia, he was a member of the Free Methodist Church. In Watertown, he was a member of the Church of God.

He is survived by three daughters, Francine Eppard of Fargo, N.D.; Michele Randazzo of Federal Way, Wash.; and Christina Chaney of South Shore, S.D. His parents survive, as do two brothers, Wesley Paul Stiner of Topeka and Edwin Earl Stiner of Overland Park, and a sister, JoAn Stiner Lucy of Port Orchard, Wash. Ten grandchildren also survive.

A sister, Beverly Stiner Vanley, died earlier.

The daughter of Albin and Edna P. Nevitt Grandeen, she was born Feb. 4, 1909, in Allen. She married Justus A. Williams on Nov. 14, 1928, in Cottonwood Falls. He died April 16, 1964.

Mrs. Williams is survived a daughter, Virginia Schlageter of Wichita; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Paula Williams of Americus is a daughter-in-law.

A son, Robert J. Williams; a brother, Arthur Grandeen; and two grandchildren, Jane Schlageter and Jeffrey Schlageter, died earlier.
