Marshall County was organized in 1855. It was named for the Gen. Frank J. Marshall, a county resident and member of the first legislature; besides the cities listed at the left, the communities of Alcove Spring, Carden, Cottage Hill, Bremen, Hermansberg, Lillis, Marietta, Nolan, Reedsville, Shroyer, Sullivan, Summit, Vliets and Winifred lie within the boundaries of Marshall County.
