BREWER, A. N.

On last Friday morning, Mr. A. N. Brewer, who had been engaged for some time, assisting J. H. Read, Esq., in his store, came down to open the store and get ready for business as usual. He was boarding with Mr. Read and it had been customary for Brewer to come down town before breakfast of mornings, open out and make a fire in the store while Mr. Read would remain at home till after breakfast when he would come and relieve Brewer, and he would go and get his breakfast. On this morning Mr. Brewer came down about as usual and opened the store, made a fire and started to hang out the usual goods as signs. He placed a small four legged stool in the recess, at the entrance, the floor of which is about a foot higher than the side walk, and mounted it, goods in hand. While reaching up to place the signs in position, one leg of the stool which, it seems, was near the edge of the door sill, slipped and the stool split and gave way letting him fall full length with that part of his breast or side directly over the heart, striking on one part of the stool. He arose quickly and went in the store, looking around as if to see if any one saw him, as he got inside he fell. Some one who saw him fall first, watched him and saw, as he entered the store, his knees give way and went over to see if he was hurt. He found him lying on the floor, near the door complaining of coldness and great pain. Quite a crowd soon collected and he was taken to the Reno House where medical aid was summoned, but it was of no avail. He said he could feel the blood flowing in the inside of his body and that he knew his heart was bursted.” He suffered great pain until nearly noon, when he died. His cousin, living in McPherson county, came after his body and on Saturday took it to that county, where it was buried.

Mr. Brewer was about thirty years of age and, we believe unmarried. He was of a quiet disposition and we are informed was a man of good habits. He purchased Sanders’ harness shop during the summer, and after a short time traded it for a farm a few miles northeast of town, which he owned up to his death. Except the cousin mentioned, we do not know that he has any relatives in this state.

The accident cast a gloom over the entire community. (Hutchinson News (Weekly) Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas February 10, 1876 page – 3 *** column – 2 submitted by Rose Stout)
