COUNTY HISTORY

Originally named Lykins County, it was named for David Lykins, missionary to the Miami Indians and member of the territorial council, it was organized in 1855. In 1861 the name was changed to Miami, after the Native American tribe.

Paola is the county seat; only a small portion of the town of Spring Hill is in Miami County; most of it lies in Johnson County.
