PAOLA, MIAMI COUNTY

Is the county seat of Miami County, situated on the Fort Scott and Gulf Railroad, forty-three miles southwest of Kansas City. The leading features of the place are the natural gas well adjacent to it; we quote the following to give the public a more definite idea of their importance. There are a number of companies drilling here and sinking new wells, the most prominent of which is the Paola Gas Company, an incorporated institution, which is now supplying the city with light and the inhabitants with fuel, there being at the present time over 200 stoves supplied with this fuel; and in order to exhibit the small volume of gas required as a motive power, it may be well to state as an incontrovertible fact that under the ingenious system devised by Mr. McKinney, of the McLachlin Mill, the amount of gas required to operate a mill with a capacity of 100 barrels would be equal to the amount of gas required to run four ordinary heating stoves. The McLachlin Mill has a ninety horse-power engine, and requires in its operations six pounds' pressure.

The business portion of the city is compactly built and surrounds a park of unusual attraction. The S G Biglow Manufacturing establishment for the manufacturing of handles is doing a flourishing business under his energetic management. There are three weekly papers: The Western Spirit, edited by J C Sheridan; also The Miami Republican and Paola Times. There are several hotels, amongst which is the Hotel Weaver, presided over by the genial Will Weaver, who knows well how to care for his guests. The city has about 4,000 inhabitants.
