Mitchell County was organized in 1870. It was named for Capt. William D. Mitchell, of the Second Kansas Cavalry and Second Kentucky Cavalry, killed in the Civil War; besides the cities listed at the left, the communities of Asherville, Blue Hill, Gilbert, Solomon Rapids and Victor lie within the boundaries of Mitchell County.
