ELSIE GOLDA POST - DIED 31 December 2009
Elsie Golda (Rowlands) Post was born April 6, 1908, to Arthur Ward and Sophia Lucy (Gillum) Rowlands of Hartford,
Kansas. She received her education in the Hartford Public Schools and at Emporia State Teachers College. She taught
school in Lyon County until her marriage to Claud Bryan Post on June 3, 1928.
They were employed in oil field work until 1933, when they moved to a farm west of Valeda, Kansas. Later the farm
home east of Edna was purchased, and it was there they raised their family. Due to Mr. Post’s failing health, they
moved to Wichita in 1965, where she was associated with the School of Nursing for both the Winfield Memorial Hospital
and Wesley Medical Center until 1972. At that time she came to Coffeyville as manager of the Dale Apartments, retiring
in 1986. She was a member of First Christian Church, Coffeyville, and teacher of the Queen Esther Class. During
the years on the farm, she worked with the youth in 4-H Clubs, the WTL Extension unit, and Farm Bureau. She is
survived by two daughters, Betty Nettleton of Wichita, Kansas; and Joan Shearhart (Jay) of Coffeyville; 15 grandchildren;
29 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers,
one sister, her husband, a son-in-law, a grandson, and a great-grandson. Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home is handling
the arrangements. Family visitation will be Monday, January 4, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel
Chapel, Coffeyville. A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, January 5, at 2:00 p.m. at the Penwell-Gabel
Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to First Christian Church, Coffeyville; or American Bible
Society. Contributions may be left with the funeral home, or mailed to Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 2405 Woodland

Bill G. Singleton, 78, of Independence died Friday
morning, January 15, 2010 at his home. Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 200 South
Pennsylvania Avenue on Thursday, January 21 at 2:00 PM with the reverends Marilyn and Jack Gregory officiating.
Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Friends may visit at Penwell-Gable Funeral Home from noon until 7:00
PM on Wednesday, January 20. Family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM. The family has suggested memorials
to First United Methodist Church of Independence, Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, or Independence National Education
Association Scholarship Fund. Remembrances will be received at the funeral home. Bill G. Singleton was born November
15, 1931 to Gideon and Ruthe Singleton. He graduated from Westville High School in Westville, OK. He attended Connors
State Junior College in Warner, OK, and attained a bachelor’s degree in history and physical education from Northeastern
State University in Tahlequah, OK. He received a masters degree in education from the University of Oklahoma. He
played football during eight years of high school and college. He was an all-conference center in high school and
at Connors. He was an all-conference linebacker at Northeastern when NSU won its first and second Oklahoma Collegiate
Football Championships in 1951 and 1952. Bill was a lifetime member of the NSU Letterman’s Club and Alumni Association.
He was inducted into the NSU Athletic Hall of Fame in January 2000. Bill served in the United States Marine Corp
from 1953-1955. He came to Independence in 1963 as assistant football coach at Independence Community College.
He had a 25-year football and track coaching career and a 37-year teaching career in Kansas junior colleges and
high schools, retiring in 1993 following 30 years at Independence High School. He also served in various other
capacities with the ICC Pirate and IHS Bulldog sports. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #76 in Erie, KS. He
was a member of the First United Methodist Church. On March 23, 1951 he was united in marriage to De Lois Spears.
She survives at the home. Additional survivors include one son, Joe Singleton of Olathe, KS; two daughters, Jeanie
Ater and her husband Bob of Overland Park, KS, and Jill Jackson and her husband Dennis of Windsor, Ontario. He
is also survived by six grandchildren, Brandon Ater and his wife Abbey, Aaron Singleton and his wife Riki, Jared
Ater, Brett Ater, and twins Audrey and Claire Jackson. There are also two great-grandchildren, Parker and Meyer
Ater. Also surviving are half-sister, Neila Lee Page of Fayetteville, AR and a half-brother, Andy John Akin of
Gentry, AR. His parents preceded him in death. He was deeply loved and will be deeply missed

Eula Barker Hole, 76, R. 4, died Thursday at St.
Francis Hospital, Wichita. She was born Aug. 30, 1906 at Liberty to Alpheos C. and Lottie Rogers Barker. She married
Nathan Hole June 1, 1924 at Chanute and lived in Neosho County her entire married life . Memberships: Shaw Christian

COX, HERBERT VICTOR
Herbert Victor Cox, 90, formerly of 201 S. 9th,
died Sunday at 9:05 p.m. at The Manor nursing home, where he had lived for the past eight years. Graveside services
will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City with Weston Scott, of the Community Christian Church,
officiating. Friends may call at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home until 6 p.m. tonight and from 8 a.m. to 1
p.m. on Wednesday. Herbert Victor Cox was born July 29, 1900, in Elk City, the son of John L. and Laura Little
Cox. He attended Elk City Schools. He was a farmer and a member of the Christian Church of Elk City. Surviving

Coffyville - Elizabeth Davis, 94, of Coffeyville,
died Monday at the Caney Nursing Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Graves Funeral Home, followed
by burial in Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville. Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Wednesday. Elizabeth
Davis was born July 9, 1896, in San Augustine, Texas, to Monroe and Ida (Slaughter) Burleson. She grew up in San
Augustine and Okfuskee County, Okla. She moved to Coffeyville in 1919. On Dec. 16, 1917, she married Frank Davis
in Weleetka, Okla., and he is deceased. She was a member of the Chirst of Christ No. 2. Surviving are one daughter,
Marjorie Horn, of Coffeyville; one brother, Columbus Watts, of Los Angeles, Calif; one sister, Jeanetta Bledsoe,

Caney - Julia V. Lowery, 95, of Pawhuska, Okla.,
formerly of Caney, died Monday at a Pawhuska Hospital. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Graves Funeral
Home, with Raymond C. Holler officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery. Memorials have been suggested to
the American Heart Association and the American Arthritis Foundation and may be left at the funeral home. Julia
V. Lowery was born Feb. 18, 1896, in Smith County, to Archie C. and Bessie I. (Clough) Moore. On March 13, 1915,
she married Samuel "Jock" Lowery in Sedan, and he is deceased. She was a member of the Worldwide Church
of God. Surviving are one daughter, Bessie Garrison, of Pawhuska; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren

Moline - Newell Scott Douglas, 72, rural Grenola,
died Saturday at Mercy Hospital in Independence. Funeral services were conducted today at Watts Funeral Home in
Moline. Burial was in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Grenola. Memorials are suggested to the Grenola Senior Citizens.
Mr. Douglas was born Aug. 20, 1918, in Grenola, to Earl Scott and Nellie (Hunt) Douglas. He was a farmer and rancher
and a member of the Christian church in Grenola. On Jan. 5, 1945, he married Mary Fern Stewart in Sedan. She survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Rita Dixon, Moline; and two sisters, Laverne Mason, Arkansas City, and Lorene

Mrs. Lela B. Lett, 82, of 801 Reveille lane, died
Sunday at Allen Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Fire Baptized
Holiness church in Cherryvale, Kan. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery in Liberty, Kan. Mrs. Lett was born Dec.
2, 1887, in Dade county, Mo. She married Hiram M. Lett who died in 1918. Mrs. Lett was a member of the First Nazarene
church in Nyssa, Ore. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. A. K. Kiddoo of 801 Reveille lane and Mrs. Curtis Allen
of Liberty; three sons, Earl T. Lett of Independence, Vilas L. Lett of Parma, Idaho, and Cleo B. Lett of Coffeyville;
one sister, Mrs. Henry Norris of Cherryvale; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lett was preceded
in death by two brothers. Burns Funeral Home is in charge of the services. Local arrangements were haldled by the

BOWEN, WILLIAM GUY
: Pvt. William Guy "Bill" Bowen, former
West Plains high school student, was killed in action on Leyte Island on December 7, last, , having been shot down
by a Japanese sniper, after he had cleaned out two enemy machine gun nests with his pistol. He was a son of Mrs.
Etta Bowen, who lives in the Rudville community, six miles northeast of West Plains, and also was a brother of
Mrs. Bill McMillin, of the Rudville community. Young Bowen was a paratrooper with General MacArthur's forces. He
was with the 11th Airborne division and had been in New Quinea before going to the Philippines for the invasion
of Leyte. The Bowen family moved to Howell county some ten or twelve years ago from Coffeyville, Kans., and the
father, Guy Bowen, died a few years ago. Two of paratrooper Bowen's brothers also are in the armed forces, Sgs.,
Maurice Bowen being with the medical corps at Stark General Hospital, Charleston, S. C., while Pvt. Robert Bowen
is with the army in Germany. Also his brother-in-law, Bill McMillin, of West Plains, is now in training with the
U. S. Infantry at Camp Wolters, Tex. He formerly was employed in the mechanical department of the Quill. (The West

Margie Belle Fox Bailey age 72, died Friday, May
14, 2004 at her home in Caney, Kansas.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of the United Methodist Church in Caney,
Kansas with Chaplin Dois Nix of Hynes Memorial Hospice of Coffeyville, Kansas officiating. Services are under the
direction of Walker-Brown Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bailey was born on October 31, 1931 in West Plains, Missouri to Lehman W. and Alice Mae (Nelson) Fox. She
was raised in West Plains until the family moved to the Independence area in 1945. She attended school at Maple
Grove and Independence High School graduating in 1949. She married Kenneth Knisley on January 29, 1949 in Salem,
Arkansas. They were divorced in 1965. In 1967, she married Robert Bailey and they divorced in 1974. Margie resided
in West Plains, Missouri in the early 70's then moved to Tulsa and was employed with Tulsa Screw Products as a
machinist until 1989. She then was associated with St. Francis Hospital in the surgery department as a dispatcher.
She then moved to Bartlesville in 1989 and then moved to Caney, Kansas in 2001 where she remained until her death.
Margie was preceded in death by her parents, her oldest brother Donnie Fox (1932-1952) and youngest brother Delbert
Dale Fox (1938-2004).
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Vickie Lynne (Knisley) and Fred Hinkle of Caney, Kansas one grandson
Fred Hinkle, II of Caney, Kansas, two brothers Robert "Bob" Nelson Fox of Caney, Kansas and Jerry Fox
of Marion, Indiana, three nephews Bob Fox II of Pratt, Kansas, Jerry Dale Fox of Copan, Del Rat Fox of Dewey and

Delbert Dale Fox, 65, retired C & L Supply
employee, died February 21, 2004, at 12:03 A.M. in Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
Private family funeral services and final rites will be directed by the Arnold Moore Funeral Service.
A native of Missouri, Delbert Dale Fox was born July 23, 1938 at West Plains. He was reared and began his elementary
education there prior to the family moving to Caney, Kansas. He completed his education at Caney and was a graduate
of the 1956 Caney High School. He and the former Beverly Ann Woodard were married in 1961 at Miami, Oklahoma and
established their home at Caney.
Surviving Mr. Fox are many friends along with his son, Del Ray Fox, Dewey; his daughter, Janet Hobson, Bartlesville;
two grandchildren, Jenna Harris, Henrietta, Okla. and Trey Hobson, Bartlesville; a great grandson, Keaton Harris,
Henrietta, Oklahoma; his brothers, Robert N. Fox, Caney, Kansas, Jerry Fox, Marion, Indiana; his sister, Ms. Margie
Bailey, Caney, Kansas; his nieces, Vickie Hinkle of Caney, Kansas & Kristy Fox of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and a nephew
Jerry Dale Fox of Copan, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and a brother, Donald David Fox.

WILLIAM ESCH SR.
William "Bill" Esch sr., 56, of Bartlesville, died Thursday noon at the Jane Phillips Memorial Medical
Center. He was born Nov 20, 1923 at Cherryvale, to William and Polly Esch. He married Alice K. Schwartz on Jan
24, 1944, at Ottawa. He was a charter member of the Falcon Airplane Club.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son,
William Esch Jr. of Pryor; one daughter, Karen Dixon of Kansas city, Mo.; three brothers, Robert and Karl Esch
both of Coffeyville and Keith Esch of Wichita; and one sister Norma Wade of Big Springs, Texas.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Memory

KATHRYN TEMPLET
Kathryn A. Templet of Cherryvale, died at 7:25
a.m. Monday, (May 19, 1986) in Mercy Hospital in Independence. she had been admitted there on May 10. Mrs. Templet
was born Feb 7, 1924 in Parsons, to Earl and Viola (Vandergrift) Jones. she grew up in Cherryvale, attending local
schools and graduated from Cherryvale High School in 1942.
On June 22, 1945 in Parsons, she married Joseph
Templet. He died Jan 9, 1979. Survivors include three sons, Joe of Wheaton, Ill., and Randy and Cory, both of Pryor,
Okla and five grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in the Darling
and Burns Chapel, Cherryvale. The casket will be closed at the time of the service. burial will be in Fairview
Cemetery, Cherryvale. A Memorial has been established with the American Heart Association and donations may be

GENE AUSTIN
Delbert Gene Austin died Saturday, 17 September 1988, at his Aurora home. He was 64. Services for Austin were Tuesday
at Aurora-Chase Chapel. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery.
Austin was born July 12, 1924 in Cherryvale, Kansas.
He married Jeanette L. Baumgardner. He spent most of his life in Colorado and worked in the Colorado Spings and
Denver areas. Austin was a member of the Local Union #145 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters, Grand Junction.
Immediate survivors include his wife; two daughters,
Rita K. Tirone, Denver, and Janice Davis, Aurora; a son, Tom s. Austin, Aurora; and six grandchildren. Contributions

HELEN TAGGART
Mrs. Helen Taggart, age 61, wife of Virgil Taggart,
died 10;10 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 1986 at the family residence in rural Dewey following an extended illness.
Graveside committal rites and prayer services will be accorded Mrs. Taggart 2 p.m. Tuesday on the family plot of
the Dewey Cemetery under the direction of the Neekamp Funeral Home. Rev., Ralph Dershem, pastor of the Wann Baptist
Church, and Rev. David Flick, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Dewey, will serve as the officiants.
Mrs. Taggart was born in Bartlesville, January
12, 1925 and was the daughter of Lawrence and Eliza (Daniels) Brown. She attended elementary school in Pawhuska,
completing her education in Cherryvale, Kansas. She married Virgil Taggart on Sept 18, 1942 in Bartlesville. Following
her marriage, Mrs. Taggart attended Bartlesville Business College and began her 38 year career with Phillips Petroleum
Co., in 1944. Mrs. Taggart took longterm disability in 1982 and had been in failing health since that time.
In addition to her husband, Virgil; of the home
in Dewey; Mrs. Taggart is survived by two sons, Joe Lee Taggart of Bartlesville and Lynn Lee Taggart of Dewey;
three brothers, Robert E. Brown of Calif., Pat Ford of Altoona, Kan and Rex Brown of Fredonia, Kan., one sister
Dorothy Andres of Fredonia, Kan, and three grandchildren. Mrs. Taggart was preceded in death by four brothers.

Caney -- Marian Maxine Burns, 75, Caney, formerly
of Cheryvale, died Saturday morning, July 29, 2000 at St. John's Medical Center, Tulsa, Okla. The rosary will be
said at 7:30 p.m. this evening (Wednesday Aug 2) at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Caney, with the family receiving
frinds following the rosary in the Sacred Heart Parish Hall.
The funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday,
Aug 3, at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Cherryvale, with burial at the Fairview Cemetery at Cherryvale.
Casketbearers will be Shawn M. Foster, Matthew C. Burns, Ted a Foster, Ken D. Foster, Clint D. Finney and Terry
L. Wood. The family has suggested memorials to the Marian Burns Christmas Candy Fund or the Meals on Wheels. The
remembrances may be left at Graves Funeral Home in Caney. Marian Maxine Dack was born Oct 6, 1924, in cherryvale,
Kan to Samuel F. and Naomi R. (Kriebel) Dack. she was raised in the Cherryvale area and graduated from Cherryvale
High School in 1942. During World War II she built airplanes for North American Mfg. Co. On May 27, 1946, she married
John M. Burns at Cherryvale, and he survives his wife at the home in Caney. They have lived in Parsons, Cherryvale,
Manhattan, Sydney, Ohio. They have lived in Caney since 1956. Mrs. Burns worked at Kopco Inc. in various capacities
and retired in 1987. She was a memeber of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Altar Society, the American Legion
Auxiliary and the P.T.A. She also worked with the Girl Scouts of America as a troop leader for many years. For
many years, Mrs. Burns served as "Mrs Claus," assisting her husband in the portrayal of Santa Claus and
Mrs. Claus during Christmastime. Mrs. Burns is survived by her husband, John M. Burns Sr., of the home in Caney,
five children, Rebecca Foster, Midwest city, Okla., John M. Burns Jr., Park City, Kan., Margaret "Peg"
King, Tulsa, Okla. Judith Finney, Wichita and Carol George, Augusta; one brother, Glenn s. Dack, Coffeyville, one
sister Emma Jean (Dack) Wood, Cherryvale; 16 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rose Hill, Kan - Cherryvale native and longtime
Caney resident John Morey Burns Sr., 78, died Friday evening June 28, 2002 at the Carriage House Assisted Living
Center in Rose Hill, Kan. The viewing will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Wednesday evening from 6 p.m.
to 8 p.m. There will be no visitation held on July 4, 2002 in order to honor Independence Day.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, July 3, at the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Caney with Father Edward Stenberger presiding. Funeral
mass will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 5, at the St. Xavier Catholic Church in Cherryvale, with Fr. Edward Stenberger,
Fr.Sam Pinkerton, serving as officiants. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Cherryvale. a military honor
guard from Fort Riley will provide military burial honors. John Morey Burns, Sr., was born April 17, 1924, in Cherryvale
to Robert Burns and Matilda (Morey) Burns. He was born and raised in the Cherryvale area. He attended the St
Xavier Catholic School. He was a 1942 graduate of Cherryvale High School.
He served in the U.S. Army Special Services in
the European Theatre during World War II. He attended Independence Junior college, where he received his associate
arts degree in 1947. He also attended Kansas State University in the engineering program.
He married Marian Maxine Dack on May 27, 1946,
in Cherryvale. she preceded him in deaath on July 29, 2000. They lived in Parsons, cherryvale and Manhattan, KJan.
Sydney, Ohio and made their home in Caney since 1956. He was employed at the Ammunition Plant in Parsons, Kan.,
He later worked for Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville as a mechanical engineer, retiring in 1982 after
26 years of service.
Memberships include Sacred Heart Catholice church,
where he served as a board Member, CCD Instructor, CYO Group Leader; Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion.
He was a member of the Caney Recreation Commission and was a coach and umpire for youth sports for many years.
He also served as an announcer and statistician for Caney Bullpup football teams for many years. He announced many
civic and sporting events and instigated the "Pep Rally Tonight: in downtown Caney during the football season.
John and Marian both were know for playing Bingo with residents at the Caney Nursing Center each week before ill
health kept them from enjoying their camraderie with the nursing center residents. He was perhaps most know for
donning a red Santa Claus suit each Christmas and traveling throughout the area, spreading holiday cheer in churches,
homes, businesses, schools and the Caney Christmas Parade. He also served as a Democratic Precinct Committeeman.
Survivors include five children, Rebecca Foster
of Midwest city, Okla., John M. Burns Jr. of Park city, Kan., Margaret "Peg" King of Tulsa, Okla., Judith
Finney of Wichita, Kan., and Carol George of Augusta, Kan.; two sisters, Margaret L. Burns and Catherine Truster,
both of Sydney, Ohio, two brothers, Michael Burns of Wichita and Richard Burns of Bonner springs, Kan.; 16 grandchildren,
five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one
brother Robert Burns.

Mrs. Juanita Francis Bennett, wife of Claude Allen
Bennett of 614 N. Neosho, Cherryvale, died at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mercy Hospital in Independence where she had
been admitted a short time earlier.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Potts Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Horace E. Hunsaker,
pastor of the Nazarene Church at Cherryvale, officiating. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Juanita Francis Bennett was born Aug. 1, 1912, in Chanute, the daughter of Frank and Nannie (Norris) Guier. She
attended school in Niotaze and Independence and was a graduate of the Independence High School.
Mrs. Bennett was at one time employed by Dr. Furgason of Independence and also the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant
of Parsons.
She was married to Dale O’Brien and they were later separated. On Jan. 7, 1947, she was married to Claude Allen
Bennett in Arkansas. The couple made their home in Oklahoma for several years before moving in December of 1968
to Independence. In 1971 they moved to Cherryvale.
She was a member of the Davis Park Christian Church of Enid, Okla., and the Senior Citizen’s Club of Cherryvale.
Surviving is the widower, Claude of the home address; two sons, Robert O’Brien of Liberty and Thomas A. Bennett
of Cherryvale; two daughters, Mrs. Dale “Barbara” Hilyard of rural Independence and Mrs. Gerald “Karen” Tice of
Cherryvale; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Delores Latner of Tucson, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; one brother, Charles W. Guier
of rural Independence; one stepsister, Mrs. Delbert “Nita” Moore of Boise, Idaho.
Casketbearers will be Bob W. Bennett, Ted Bennett, Marvin Bennett, Eugene Bennett of Neodesha, Chet Bennett, Cherryvale,

Cherryvale --Rosary for Carolyn Phillips, 74, of 219 S. Neosho, will be recited at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis
Xavier Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial to immediately follow with the Rev. Stephen Thapwa, pastor,
officiating. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at Potts Chapel in Cherryvale
until 8 p.m. today. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and they may be mailed to Potts
Chapel in Independence. Mrs. Phillips died Saturday, August 23, 1997 at 11:04 a.m. at Mercy Hospital, where she
had been a patient since August 1.
She was born April 30, 1923, at Cherryvale, to
William and Grace (Giles) Winsell. She graduated from Cherryvale High School.
On Jan. 28, 1946 in Cherryvale she married Gene
Phillips and he survives. Mrs. Phillips worked for six years in the food service department for the Cherryvale
school system. She was a memeber of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Alter Society, and the Cherry Chums
Community Club.
Other survivors include two daughters, Cindy Fiechtl,
Riverton, and Kathy Carlson, Tyler, Texas, two sons, John Phillips, Rocton, Ill., and Mark Phillips, Dallas, Texas,
two sisters, Betty Carter, Independence, and Ruth Schiler, Portland, Ore.; two half sisters, Fern Price and Bertha
Ankerson, both of Clinton, Mo.; nine grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Casketbearers
for the service will be Jim Schierlman, Larry Schierlman, Joe Bauer, Chris Bauer, Shawn Sourk, and Art Phillips.

MULLINS
James Leonard "Moon" Mullins, 76, of Phoenix, Ariz., and a former area resident, died Friday Oct 9, 1998
at the Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix. Mr. Mullins was born Aug 7, 1922 in Arkansas to Roy Monroe and Lee (Bryant)
Mullins. He grew up and attended schools in the Cherryvale area, and graduated from Cherryvale High School. On
Aug. 4, 1950, he married Lorena June Medsker in Anchorage, Alaska. She preceded him in death on Feb. 20, 1995.
He owned and operated Moon's Mobil in Phoenix for many years until his retirement.
Among the survivors are his children, grandchildren
and great grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 10:a.m. Saturday at Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale. Services
are under the direction of Potts Chapel. Friends may register after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the cemetery. (Submitted

Betty Ann McEwen, passed at our local hospital on the 22 September. She was a native of Kansas and lived in the
Valley for 10 years. She loved her family and was a homemaker for 21 years. Survived by her family, husband, "Bill"
William McEwen of Big Bear City, three daughters, Joanne Stalls of North Carolina, Helen Bach of North Carolina,
and Lois Stanfield of Minnesota, and 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Services will be held Thursday,
September 30, 11:00 a.m., Memorial Chapel, Rose Hills Memorial Park, Big Bear Mortuary and family, directors. Betty

There will be no service at the family's request for Patricia M. Sheffield, 56, who died Tuesday, July 1982 at
her Anchorage home. Mrs. Sheffield was born April 26, 1924, in Oklahoma City, Okla. She was raised in Cherryvale,
Kansas and has lived in Alaska for 20 years and was a homemaker. She leaves her husband, Robert, two daughters,
Jean P. and Susanne, all of Anchorage; and two sons, Robert D. of Stevenson, Wash. and Kim Allan of Weymouth, Mass.

WILDA MARIE COOK
Wilda Marie Cook, 82, of Tonkawa, Oklahoma passed away Sunday, October 21, 2007 at Willow Haven Nursing Home in
Tonkawa, Oklahoma. Wilda was born December 9, 1924 in Cherryvale, Kansas to Fred and Lulu (Brooks) Rambow. Celebration
of her life will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 25, 2007 in the Tonkawa Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Serviss
officiating. Interment will follow in riverview Cemetery, Tonkawa, Oklahoma. Arrangements are under the direction
of Tonkawa Funeral Home, Tonkawa, Oklahoma.
Wilda grew up and graduated from school in Cherryvale,
Kansas; then graduated from cosmetology school on July 10, 1945.
She married Charles "Ed" Cook, October
25, 1945 in Cherryvale, Kansas and he preceded her in death November 10, 2004 after celebrating 59 years of marriage.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Hays, Kansas where she served as a youth leader a Sunday School teacher,
the Sunday School secretary, and was active in the American Baptist Woman's Association. She served as a cub scout
and girl scout leader as their children were growing up. Wilda opened an upholstery shop in Hays, Kansas in 1962,
running it until she retired. She and Ed lived in Hays for fifty years before moving to Tonkawa, Oklahoma in 1998
to be close to their son. Wilda's children remember how she opened her home to their many friends, welcoming them
to the dinner table. Sunday dinners were a time to have family and friends there. She loved to visit and could
listen for hours to those who needed a listening ear. She walked the walk and gave them all something to aspire
to.
She is survived by her sons, Kenneth J. Cook and
his wife, Doris of Kansas City, Kansas, Fred C. cook of Cincinnati, Ohio, George Cook and his wife, Amanda of Tonkawa,
Okla; her daughter, Carol R. Grover and her husband, Bill of Lancaster, California; a sister Leota Davis of Wichita,
Kansas; a brother Clyde Rambow of Colorado Springs, Colorado; seven grandchildren, James Cook and his wife, Dolores
of Wichita, Kansas, John and Rachel Cook of Kansas City, Kansas, Adam and Bridget Grover of Lancaster, California,
Timothy Cook and his wife, Lydia of Granite City, Illinois and Zachary Cook and his wife Briana of Tonkawa; two
great grandchildren, Brianna and Caedmon Cook and numberous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her
husband; her parents; two sisters, Alice Swayze and Evelyn Clark and two brothers, James and Kenneth Rambow. Memorials

NEELAND
Gardner -- Mary Patricia Neeland, 79, formerly of Independence, died Friday at her home in DeSoto. Services will
be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the DeSoto Baptist Church, with burial in DeSoto Cemetery. Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner
is handling arrangements. visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tuesday at the church.
She was born Aug 30, 1924 in Cherryvale, the duahgter
of Avelino A. and Mary (Garcia) Vasquez. she received nurse's training at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, and
she married Charles H. Neeland Jr., on May 26, 1945 in Independence. they moved from Independence to DeSoto in
1948, Mr. Neeland died in 1998.
Mrs. Neeland was an office manager, helping to
open and for many years operated Johnson County Orthopedics, Olathe. She had also worked at the Sunflower Ordnance
Plant for 10 years. She retired in 1990. She served two terms on the Desoto City Council, was instrumental in city
pool and sidewalk projects, played on the Desoto Squaws softball team, was a scout den mother, and was a lifetime
member of VFW Auzillary and was active in athe Johnson County Democratic Women's Association. Mrs. Neeland attended
the Desoto Baptist Church and was active as a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include two sons, Robert A. Neeland and
Charles "Duke" Neeland III, both of DeSoto; a daughter, Patricia A. Neeland, Pittsburg; a brother, Floyd
Barnhart, Howard; a sister Josephine Hale, Arma; and five grandchildren. (Submitted by Freda Webb)

Rites for Mrs. Hosp to be Held Monday
Daughter of Pioneer Jasper County Family Was an Early-day Resident of Joplin
Funeral rites for Mrs. Mary Ann HOSP, 77 years old, who died at 7:30 o'clock yesterday morning at her home, 3312
Moffet Avenue, will be held 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Gideon Chapel. Thirt-fifth Street and Sergeant
Avenue. The Rev. W.H. FLIPPIN will be in charge. Burial will be in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. HOSP was the daughter of a pioneer Jasper County family and was an early-day resident of Joplin. Born near
Independence, Kansas in 1881, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel SWITZER, Mrs. HOSP came to Jasper County when she
was 5 years old[1886]. They first lived southwest of Carthage. In 1874 - a year after Joplin was incorporated -
the family moved to this vicinity, settling southwest of the new town in a locality that was later to become Blendville.
Mrs. HOSP attended the first school conducted in Joplin, with the late Phil ARNOLD as her teacher.
Bothered By Bushwhackers
During their residence in Kansas and also after settling in Jasper County, the family was visited by "buswhackers"
and pillaging bands of the early reconstruction days.
Mrs HOSP became a member of the Baptist Church in 1882 and was active in church work until her health failed in
recent years. She was a member of the aempire Baaptist congregation. In 1883 she was married to Joseph HOSP of
Joplin, from whom she was divorced several years ago.
Surviving are three sons: Tom HOSP, 2210 Moffet Avenue; John HOSP, 3026 East Ninth Street; and Josph HOSP of St
Joseph; a daughter, Mrs. Mary E. ROTEN, 3304 Moffet Avemue; a sister, Mrs. lola SCHELL, 2326 Willard Avenue; teo
brothers: Homer SWITZER and Walt SWITZER, both living in California; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
