GENE PHILLIPS

CHERRYVALE - Gene Phillips, 77, of Cherryvale, died at 3:42 a.m. Tuesday 26 March 2002 at Jane Phillips Regional Medical Center, Bartlesville, Okla., where he had been a patient since March 13. Rosary followed by Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Cherryvale, with the Rev. Kevin Trayers, pastor emeritus, celebrant. Interment will be at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Fort Riley Military Detachment. Knights of Columbus members will serve as casketbearers. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Potts Chapel of Cherryvale. the family may be contacted at 219 S. Neosho.

Memorials are suggested to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Research or St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and they will be accepted at the funeral home.

Mr. Phillips was born May 10, 1924 at Cherryvale, the son of Bruce and Matilda (Hooter) Phillips. He attended school in Cherryvale. Mr. Phillips served as a medic with the U.S. Army in the Phillipines during the World War ii. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Cherryvale. He sold livestock feeds during most of his life, working as a salesman for Cleaver Farm Supply until his retirement.

On January 28, 1946, he married Carolyn Winsell in Cherryvale, where the couple made their home. She died in 1997. Mr. Phillips was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by two daughters, Cindy Fiechtl, Riverton, and Kathy Carlson, Tyler, Texas; two sons, John Phillips, Rockton, Ill., and Mark Phillips, Dallas, Texas; a sister, Helen Schabel, Cherryvale; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two step grandchildren. GEORGIA (MARTINDALE) MENSCH

Coeur d'Alene

Graveside service for Georgia M. (Martindale) Mensch, 79, will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens. Yates Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Mensch, who was born in Cherryvale, Kan., died Friday, Sept, 2002. She was a 57 year resident of Coeur d'Alene. She married Herbert Mensch in 1942. For many years, she was the manager and waitress at the Woolworth's lunch counter, then at the Dakota Cafe.

Her husband died in 1993. Survivors include a son, Ron Mensch of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; two daughters, Zelma Clark of Greenacres and Jo Barber of Las Vegas; a brother, Norman Martindale of Lakeside, Ariz., four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. ALFRED WILLIAMS

Alfred Chester Williams, 70, of Kearney, Mo., and formerly of Cherryvale, died Sunday (March 27, 1994) in St. Luke's Northland Hospital of Kansas city, Mo. Mr. Williams was born Nov 26, 1923, in Cherryvale to Wiley A. and Bertha Jane (Lyon) Williams. He attended the local schools, graduating from Cherryvale High School. On Sept 16, 1943, he married Donna Lee McConnell in Independence. they divorced in 1986. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, and was stationed in England. He served from 1943 to 1945, and attained the rank of Technical Sergeant before being honorable discharged.
Mr. Williams owned and operated a service station in Parsons in the 1950 and 60's. He then moved to Kansas City, where he worked as a truck driver for Time-D.C., retiring in 1984. Following retirement, he continued to work part-time at Steve's No-Spot Carwash. He was a member of the Friendship Southern Baptist Church of Parsons, the Teamsters Union, and the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include four sons, Jerry and Bob, both of Parsons, Jim of Kansas City, Mo., and Bill of Newton; one daughter, Lois Couch of Parsons; one brother, Joe of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Thelma Pierson of Kansas City, Mo., and Dorothy Misener of Parsons; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of Darling and Burns Chapel of Cherryvale. The family will received friends at the chapel from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, and friends may call from 9 a.m. until noon on Thursday, at which time the casket will be closed.

The family has suggested memorials to the American Cancer Society. Memorials can be received by the funeral home. (Freda Webb)

CECIL "MAXINE" COLE

Topeka - Cecil "Maxine Cole, 77, of Topeka, died there Monday (Sept 17, 2001). Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Fairlawn Church of the Nazarene, Topeka, with burial at Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence at 2:30 p.m.

Friends may visit at the Parker-Price Mortuary, Topeka, after 3 p.m. today, with the family receiving friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Fairlawn Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Cole was born Feb. 26, 1924 in Cherryvale to Floren and Mary Catherine (Hoppking) Hummel. She lived in Neodesha until 1953 when she moved to Topeka. On Aug 10, 1940 she married Francis "Jake" Cole in Miami, Okla. He died in 1977.

She worked for Ripley's Cleaners and also for Heidi and Peter Day Care. She was a member of the Fairlawn Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Cole is survived by two sons, Jimmie Cole and Gary Cole both of Topeka; three daughters, Catherine Tompson and Joan Bell, both of Wichita, and Cheryl Lindburg, Topeka; four sisters, Betty Heape, Independence, Eleanor Hare, Neodesha, Irene Okhoff, Sacramento, Calif., and Patty Mitchell, Arizona; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. MARGARET I. HURD

COLUMBUS - Margaret I. Hurd, 71, of Columbus, died Sunday morning (Feb 20, 2000) at her home. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist church, Columbus, with the Rev. Bob Whitaker and Eric Hurd officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Cherryvale, at a later date. Memorial remembrances are suggested to the Life Christian School Scholarship Fund, 1001 Merle Evans Drive, Columbus, Kan. 66725. Remembrances should be identified as gifts for the Margaret I. Hurd Memorial.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Murdock Funeral Home, Columbus. Mrs. Hurd was born Jan 27, 1929 in Cherryvale to Everett J. and Helen (Snow) Haney. Her early schooling was in Cherryvale. On Nov 30, 1946, she married Chester A. Hurd Jr. in Cherryvale and he survives of the home. The couple lived in Columbus from 1954 to 1962 and then in Fullerton, Calif., from 1962 to 1983, when they returned to Columbus. She worked at Maude Norton Hospital as a nurse's aide and at St. Jude's Hopspital in Fullerton as a nurse's aide. She continued her nurse's training at Fullerton College. In Columbus, she held membership in the Maudies and the Home Culture Club. She attended the First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir. Other survivors include a son, Eric J. Hurd, Columbus; a brother Rex M. Haney, Topeka, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. (Freda Webb)

HAROLD M. SMART

Colleyville, Texas - Harold M. Smart 85, of Irving, Texas, died Friday, March 28, 2009. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Compass Christian Church in Euless, Texas, with burial to follow at 1:30 p.m. at DFW National Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bluebonnet Hills funeral home in Colleyville, Texas.

Mr. Smart was born May 24, 1923 in Marionville, Mo., the son of Thompson A. and Myrl Smart. He served in the Army Air Corps.

He was a member of First Baptist church of Irving and was a Christian lay minister.

Mr. Smart is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie H. Smart, of Irving Texas, a son, ronald Eugene Smart, Clermont, Fla.' a daughter, Teresa Fowler, Irving, Texas; a sister, Sharon Reynolds, Independence, Kansas; two brothers, Chas of Independence, and John M. Smart of Judy, Kan.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Marvin grew up in Cherryvale, KS and graduated from Cherryvale High School in 1942. (Freda Webb)

MERLE LEON HANCHETT

Merle Leon Hanchett was born August 15,1924 to Charles & Inez Hanchett and passed away December 27, 2009. He attended school in Cherryvale and graduated with the class of 1942. He married Louise, January 17, 1949. Merle was a U.S. Marine and WWII Veteran serving from 1942 -1945. He received 2 Purple Hearts, and Letters of Accommodation. He leaves behind wife, Louise, son William, three sisters and one brother, two grandchildren, five great grandchildren.

Family will hold a Celebration of Life for him at the Moose Lodge in Anderson, Ca., Saturday, January 2nd, 2010 at 1:30 p.m..

ZANE GENE DEWEY

Springdale, Ark. - Zane Gene Dewey of Springdale, Ark., passed on from his mortal bonds to the freedom of Life Eternal, on Tuesday, Jan., 22, 2008 in Northwest Medical Center in Springdale, Ark., in the company of members of his beloved family.

Zane was born June 6, 1924, to Ed Dewey and Kitty Huffington in Oswego, Kansas. His birth mother passed six months later, and he came to be raised by her sister, Sadie Huffington of Cherryvale, Sadie or "Auntie" as he, and his family called her and knew her, was his mother, and the grandmother to his children.
Zane enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps as a young man in 1943. He trained in Bowling Green, Ohio, and shipped off to San Diego for further training before boarding a troop ship bound for Hawaii, and then the immortal battle on Iwo Jima, the turning point of the war in the Pacific Theater. He kept his recollections of his intense involvement in the battle, including witnessing the raising of the flag on Mt. Suribachi to himself for many years, before he spent a day alone and dictated his memories in graphic detail of the horror of war that he witnessed, and his miraculous survival of the combat. These were published a few years ago in the Morning News of Northwest Arkansas. After the battle, he returned to Hawaii and then was part of the Occupation Force in the remains of Nagasaki, Japan.

Zane returned home and gained a law degree from Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. He married Susan Elizabeth Hoppe of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1952. This marriage endured for 56 years, and they enjoyed the love of three sons, two grand-daughters, and one great-granddaughter. Zane retired in 1982 after 35 years of service in State Farm Insurance Company.

Zane is survived by his wife, of the home, Susan Elizabeth Dewey; sons Kim Dewey of Springdale, Ark., David Dewey of Valley Center, Kan., and Mark Dewey of Falls Church, VA.; daughters-in-law Connie Dewey of Valley Center, Kan., and Sandy Dewey of Falls church, VA., granddaughters Cary Dewey of Fayetteville, Ark., and Shannon Dewey of Falls church., Va., and great grandaughter Meredith Moler of Derby, Kan. Also his beloved companion, a Cairn terrier, Mr. Charlie M. Cheswick of Springdale, Ark.

A celebration of Zane's Life will be held at the Nelson-Berna Funeral Home, Fayetteville, Ark., on Feb 16, 2008 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Dewey asked that donations be made to The Carter Center, One Copenhill Rd., 453 Freedom Parkway, Atlanta, GA. 30301. (Freda Webb)

NANCY COCKE

Funeral for Nancy A. Cocke, 70, Lawton, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Ed Jansson, pastor of Central Baptist Church, Lawton officiating. Mrs. Cocke died Tuesday January 4, 1994 at her home. Burial will be in Letitia Cemetery, east of Lawton.

She was born Dec. 27, 1923 in Cherryvale, Kansas. she married J. Roy Cocke on Sept 29, 1948 in Wichita, Kan. She grew up in Kansas and graduated from high school in Cherryvale. She later received nurse's training at Wesley Hospital in Wichita. She was a registered nurse and had been employed at Comanche County Memorial Hospital. She came to Lawton from Kansas in May 1962. Mrs Cocke was a member of First Prebyterian Church, where she had been involved in Church Circle. She had attended Letitia Baptist Church, east of Lawton. She was a member of Entre Nous.

Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters: Debbie Welsh and Becky Bennett, both of Lawton; four sisters: Ruth Peck, Wichita; Lucille Stute, Perryton, Texas; Mary Allen, Hurst, Texas; and Delores Hunter, Memphis, Tenn; a brother Woodrow Edwards, Eureka, Kansas and two grandchildren. MARTHA JANE BLADES

Martha Jane Blades, 71, of Humboldt, died Monday, 29 July, 1996, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Chanute with the Rev. Charles Carson officiating. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Chanute or to the Humboldt Public Library. Kunkel Funeral chapel of Humboldt is in charge of arrangements.
Miss Blades was born Aug. 24, 1924 in Cherryvale, to Ralph and Mary (Nicholson) Blades. She attended Cherryvale schools, graduated from Parsons Junior College and the University of Kansas. She also received a master's degree from Pittsburg State University.

She was a teacher at Paola High School, Independence community Junior college and Missouri Southern University. She began work for the Chanute Tribune as a reporter in 1970 and remained there until moving to Humboldt in 1980 when she became librarian of the Humboldt Public Library. She retired in 1992. Miss Blades was a member of the first Presbyterian Church in Chanute, the Order of the Eastern Star and the alumni associations at the University of Kansas and Pittsburg State University.

Survivors include two brothers, Ralph Blades Jr., Humboldt, and Donald Blades, Fort Worth, Texas. (Freda Webb)

LEON R. COLE

Leon Roy Cole, 69, of 1216 W. 3rd, Coffeyville, died Saturday night, June 8, 1991 at his home. Services will be at 10 a.m.

Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Coffeyville. burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale under the direction of Ford-Wulf-Bruns Edgewood Chapel of Coffeyville. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Tesday. Memorials have been establishedin his name to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund or the Coffeyville Lions club Scholarship Fund.

Mr. cole was born April 25, 1922, in Cherryvale to Tolbert and Lena Mae Cole. He attended school in Cherryvale and graduated from Cherryvale High School in 1942.

He entered the United States Army Air Corps in 1942, serving in the 350th Bombardment Squadron. He received the Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Bronze Star and the Silver Service Star. He saw action as part of the Air Offensive and the Allied Occupation Forces in Europe. He was discharged in 1945.

Mr. Cole received his bachelor of science degree in 1951 and his master's degree in 1963 from Pittsburg State University. He taught at the Cherryvale Junior High School from 1951 to 1961, where he also was football and basketball coach.

He served as a teacher and principal at the Lincoln Elementary School in Fredonia from 1961 to 1979. He then moved to Coffeyville, where he taught at the McKinley Junior High School and the Field Kindley High School. He retired in 1987.

On May 27, 1956, he married Joan Robinson and she survives at the home. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coffeyville, the Coffeyville Lions Club and the Coffeyville Stamp Club.

Other survivors include one daughter, Annette Norris, Topeka, two brothers, John Cole, Independence and Richard Cole, Cherryvale; two sisters, Louise House, Dewey, Okla., and Jeanne Hibdon, Middleburg, Fla. (Freda Webb)

BETTY READ

Betty Nadine Read, 72, of Cherryvale, died Friday (Jan 24, 1997) at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville where she had been undergoing treatment. Betty Read was born July 5, 1924 in Cherryvale to Harold and Faye (Cunningham) Haney. She grew up and attneded school in Cherryvale, graduating from Cherryvale High School.

On Nov 30, 1942, she married Lewis E. "Bud" Read in Chanute. The couple made their home in Cherryvale. He preceded her in death on April 13, 1981. Over the years she was associated with and was owner of Dewey's Auto Store.

Mrs. Read was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women and over the years had been active in various Cherryvale civic organizations.

Survivors include one son, Lewis Alan of Cherryvale; two grandsons, and one great grandson. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Cherryvale. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery.

Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. Monday at Potts Chapel in Cherryvale, after which the casket will be closed. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Potts Chapel. ROBERTSON, ELIZABETH

Mrs Elizabeth Robertson mother of Mrs J.V. Campbell [Nancy Arlie Robertson] and sister of George and Miss Nancy Ingram died at her home in Coffeyville, Kansas Thursday morning Oct. 20, 1904. The deceased lady was born in East Tennessee 78 years ago and moved with her parents to Mo. in 1844. She was married to E.C, Robertson in Moniteau county, Mo. Jan.28, 1847. She lived for a number of years at this place and in 1868 she moved to Coffeyville, Kansas, residing there ever since except for a short while at this place a few years ago. She was a faithful and consistent member of the Baptist church for many years and was esteemed a most excellent Christian, friend and neighbor. The funeral was conducted by her pastor at Coffeyville and the interment took place there. (Knob Noster Gem, submitted by Colin C. Senior)

In Failing Health for Several Months -- Funeral Friday

Mrs. Elizabeth Robertson, aged 78 years, died at 3:40 o'clock Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. F. Boothby, at 215 West Seventh street.

The funeral will be held at the home Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock; burial will be conducted by Reverend Plannett, pastor of the Baptist church, of which Mrs. Robertson was an active member.

Elizabeth Ingram Robertson was born in Nashville, Tenn. On January 28, 1846 she was married to E. C. Robertson, who preceded her to the grave a little more than five years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Robertson with their family moved to Kansas in 1869, and to Coffeyville in 1889, where Mrs. Robertson has ever since made her home. She leaves two sisters and one brother, five children and eight grandchildren. Her surviving children are E. T. Robertson, of Paragould, Ark., and Mesdames J. V. Campbell, of Knob Noster, Mo.; W. C. Dillon, of Scranton, Pa.; L. F. Boothby and Pearl Edwards, of Coffeyville. Of these, only Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Boothby were at their mother's bedside at the time of her death. GRACIE MAE GAROFALO

Gracie Mae Garofalo, age 87, of Joplin, Mo., passed away on Wednesday, Feb 17, 2010, at Joplin Health Care Center, following an illness. Gracie was born on March 28, 1922 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, the dauther of the late Ernest and Cazia (Stoneking) Chidester. She has been a Joplin resident since 1987 moving there from Parsons. She served in the United States Navy as a machinist and was a veteran of World War II. She worked as an accountant for Parsons State Hospital. She was a Presbyterian. Gracie served as a delegate to the Kansas Senior Legislature, she volunteered for NILA, she was a member of the RSVP Board for Senior Citizens, a member of the Prestige Club of St. John's Hospital, a member of Visions Unlimited at MSSU, a member of the Eastern Star Ruth Chapter Joplin, and a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Coffeyville. She graduated from Cherryvale High School in 1941.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandy gillman and husband Butch, and Wendy Gann and husband Bill, one sister Rachel Hoad of Newport News, Va.; four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Graveside services were held Saturday Feb 20, at Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale. Arrangements were under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Chapel. (Submitted by Freda Webb)

LOGAN, JIMMIE DALE

COFFEYVILLE - Jimmie Dale Logan, 74, of coffeyville, died Sunday at coffeyville Regional Medical Center. Friends can sign the register from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Fairview Cemetery Veterans Memorial Patio, with Rev. Nathan Smith officiating.

Mr. Logan was born Sept 24, 1935 at Fairland, Okla, the son of Ernest D. and Elizabeth (Towne) Logan. He graduated from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville in 1954 and attended Kansas State University in Manhattan. He married Joyce Chowning, and they divorced.

Mr. Logan was a pipefitter and master plumber, and he was co-owner of Chowning and Logan for many years. After leaving Chwning and Logan, he moved to Montana, lived there for nearly 10 years and then returned to Coffeyville. He was a member of the First Christian Church and the Pipefitters Union.

Survivors include four sons, Tim Logan of Lima, Ohio, David Logan and Jeff Logan both of Coffeyville and Kevin Logan of Oologah, Oklahoma; a daughter, Cathy O'Connor, of Houston, Texas; his mother, Elizabeth Logan of Coffeyville; four brothers, Mike Logan of Helena, Mont., Phil Logan, of Port Richey, Fla., Jerry Logan of Coffeyville, and John Logan of Branson, Mo; a sister Debbie Mumford of Tacoma, Wash; and 12 grandchildren.

CUMMINS, THOMAS A.

Thomas A. Cummins Dies at Chanute

Thomas Artimus Cummins, 80, retired Missouri Pacific car repairman, died at 9:30 a.m. today at his home in Chanute where he had resided the past 10 years. He had been ill the past 6 years.

Mr. Cummins was born at Knoxville, Mo., Nov. 4, 1864 and had resided in Coffeyville 40 years prior to going to Chanute. He was a member of the local Baptist church. Mr. and Mrs. Cummings were married Feb. 28, 1922 at Independence.

Survivors include his wife Orpha; two step-daughters, Mrs. Jim Evans of Chanute and Mrs. J.R. Robbins of Rose, Kan.; a step-son, W.T. Cline of Chanute and a sister, Mrs. Sallie Cavinder of Lawrence.

The body was brought here to the Skinner funeral home, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Robbins cemetery. (Coffeyville Daily Journal, February 20, 1945, submitted by Judy Mayfield)

MILLS, PICCOLA

Mrs. Carl Mills Buried Friday

Mrs. Piccola Mills, 71, of Sycamore died at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday of last week at Mercy hospital in Independence where she had been a patient for
two weeks.

She was born Jan. 8, 1897, near Grafton to John and Elizabeth (Cooper) Robinson. She attended rural Chautauqua county schools, Peru high school and taught at Stone and Buffalo rural schools.

After her mother's death in 1906 she made her home with her sister, the late Mrs. William (Atcha) Vanderhoof. She was also a sister of the late E. E. Robinson and Dayton Robinson of this county.

She married Carl Mills at Sedan on June 20, 1918, and they would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in June. The couple moved to Sycamore in 1945 after living in and near Sedan for 27 years.

Survivors include her husband of the home; four sons, James and Earl of Sycamore, John and Beryl of Independence; three daughters, Mrs. Mabel Powell of Independence, Mrs. Nadine Sewell of Coffeyville and Mrs. Judith Herbat of Salt Lake City; 17 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Services were held Friday afternoon in the Roderick Memorial Chapel at Independence with Rev. Sylvan Starks, associate minister of the First Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope cemetery at Independence.

Friends and relatives from this area who attended the services included Mrs. Doyle Call and Mrs. Donald Coe of Cedar Vale; Mrs. W. R. RUSSELL, VIRGIL

Virgil F. Russell, 60, of Independence died Monday, (Dec. 2, 2002.)

Mr. Russell was born Sept. 15, 1942 in Fairview, Mo. to Archie O. and Luelia P. (Shirley) Russell. He was raised and educated in Fairview, Mo. He attended Crowder College, Neosho, Mo. prior to graduating from Franklin Technical Institute, Joplin, in 1974.<P> He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964.

On Oct. 16, 1970 he married Vera J. Edwards in Miami, Okla. They moved to Independence in 1979 where he began working for Lowmaster Engineering. In 1988 they moved to Cape Cod, Mass. where he worked for Cape Cod Heating and Cooling.

They returned to Independence in 1993 where he worked for Lee's Heating and Cooling.

He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Independence.

Survivors include his wife, Vera; four children. Melissa McDaniel, Rusty Russell, and Cheryl Britain, all of Independence, and Christina Butler of Parsons; a brother, Thomas A. Russell of Port Orchard, Wash; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation hours will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday with the family greeting friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be held 2 Friday at the Mount Hope Cemetery.

RANES, CHRISTINE

Mrs. Christine Ranes, 77, widow of Lee Ranes, died Thursday, November 9, at 5:15 p.m. in the Colonial Lodge Nursing Home where she had been a resident since 1976. Mrs. Ranes was born June 10, 1901, west of Independence in the White Post District, the daughter of August and Katherine M. (Staufenbiel) Schicke. She attended White Post rural school and later received education in the Sycamore community. She married Lee Ranes at Bartlesville, Okla., June 26, 1921, and they made their home in this area most of their married life. Mr. Ranes died Nov. 26, 1977. The family home was on R. R. 2, Cherryvale. Mrs. Ranes was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Cherryvale. Survivors include one son, Lawrence Ranes, rural Cherryvale; one step-daughter, Mrs. L. T. (Ruth) Kirchhoff, Independence; one sister, Mrs. Paul Steinberger, Independence; and two grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Requiem Mass was held Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew's Catholic Church of Independence with the Rev. Daniel Mulvihill, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Cherryvale, and the Rev. Edward Steinberger of Our Lady of Lourds Catholic Church of Pittsburg. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of Potts Funeral Home. POLLETT, MURIEL MINNIE

Muriel Minnie Pollett, 93, died Tuesday at her son's home in DeSoto, Texas. Graveside services and burial will be Thursday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. in Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville with Rev. Gale Ellis officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Paralyzed Veterans Program and they may be left with Penwell-Gabel-Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Mrs. Pollet was born in rural Welch, Okla., on June 15, 1913 to James and Nellie (Martin) Burtrum. On July 3, 1933 she married Harold Pollet west of Tyro, where they made their home for 70 years. He died in 1980. Mrs. Pollet was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church of Coffeyville. Survivors include two sons, Wesley Pollet, DeSoto, Texas and Harry Pollet, Ropesville, Texas; a daughter, Heroldine Shy, Coffeyville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
