LEAHEW, WILMA FERN (HOLT)
Wilma Fern (Holt) Leahew, 84 of Independence and
formerly of Cherryvale, died April 24, 2010 in Independence.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial service
was held May 29, 2010 at the Methodist Church in Cherryvale. Mrs. Leahew was born Dec 17, 1915 in Lowell, the
daughter of William H. and Nellie Holt. She lived most of her life in Cherryvale.
She is survived by five sons, Garold Cooper, Robert
Cooper, Richard Cooper, James Cooper and Joseph Leahew; two daughters. Dorthy Shafer and Judy Bruhn and many
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Submitted by Freda Webb
ODEN, BONNIE L.
Bonnie L. Oden, 87, of Parsons died at 1:55 a.m.
Saturday, Jan 10, 2009 in Elmhaven West. She had been in failing health.
She was born June 17, 1921, near Independence to
Clyde B. and Mary Alyce (Storey) Linscott. The family moved to Cherryvale during her junior high school years
and she graduated from Cherryvale High School in 1938. She again lived in Independence before moving to Parsons
in 1955. For 30 years she was employed as a secretary at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center, retiring
in 1986. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Parsons, where in past years she had taught Sunday school
classes and had been an adult leader with the youth group.
In December 1964, she married Otis Oden. He preceded
her in death on Dec 31, 2004. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Linscott and Lewis Linscott,
and a sister Edythe Visco. She was a special friend and adopted mother to Doug and Vickie Rike of Parsons. The
service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Hyde officiating and Vickie
Rike giving a eulogy. Burial will be in Mound Valley Cemetery. Submitted by Freda Webb
OXENDER, LAURETTA

Lauretta M. Oxender, 86, of Cherryvale, died at about 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan 1977 in the Labette County Medical
Center in Parsons. Her home in Cherryvale is at 216 S. Neosho. Her husband John, survives at the home. She was
born on Jan 18, 1890, in Parsons to Frank and Lauretta Helminger Valk and had lived in the Parsons and Cherryvale
area all her life. She and Oxender were married on March 11, 1912, in Iola. Among other survivors are three sisters,
Mrs. Ruth Dwyer, Mrs. Blance Adams, both of Cherryvale, and Mrs. Ethel Smith of Larned, one grandson, Donnie Anderson
of Parsons, and one great grandchild. A son and one grandchild preceded her in death. Services are scheduled
at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Wayne Darling Funeral Home here, conducted by the Rev. Horace Hunsaker. Burial will
be at the Fairview Cemetery, in Cherryvale. Family members will received friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday

OARD, FRANCES
BRYAN
Frances Bryan Oard, 98. widow of Floyd Merrill
Oard and resident of Bartlesville, passed away at the Forrest Manor Nursing Center, Dewey, Oklahoma, at 6:02 p.m.
on Thursday, March 18, 2010. Funeral services for Mrs. Oard will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2010,
at the graveside in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, 2000 Woodland Ave., Coffeyville, Kansas. Committal prayers
and interment will be direct4ed by the Arnold Moore Funeral Service. Mrs. Oard will lie in state in the Drawing
Rooms of The Arnold Moore Funeral Residence where family and friends may call for their visitation intil being
removed for the service on Tuesday. Frances Bryan Oard was born August 6, 1911 on the family farm north of Valeda,
Kansas. She was the daughter of Albert Henry Neville and Leah Grace (Livingston) Neville. She was reared and
received her education in the Valeda Schools with the exception of her senior year at the Labette County Community
School in Altamont, Kansas where she graduated with the Senior Class of 1929. Frances was a school teacher for
two years at Labette County Schools and also taught at the Leib and Elwood Grade Schools in Angola, Kansas. She
was employed at the Legionville Preventorium south of Independence, Kansas which was a school for undernourished
children. As TB was prevalent at the time, these children also received medical treatment there. Frances then
moved to Oklahoma city where she sold books and worked at a restaurant which catered food to the employees of the
Oklahoma City Federal Building across the street. This building was bombed on April 19, 1995, killing 168 people.
She moved to Coffeyville, Kansas where she worked at the Hamburger Inn and also as a Nurse's Aide at the Coffeyville
Hospital from 1951 to 1967. Frances met Floyd Merrill Oard while in Coffeyville and they were united in marriage
on February 7, 1940 in Independence, Kansas. they made their home in rural Coffeyville. Mrs. Oard moved to Bartlesville
in 1990 to be near her daughter, Debby Lucas. Mrs. Oard is survived by her son, Louis M. Oard of Topeka, Kansas
and her daughter Debby Lucas of Bartlesville; grandchildren Cindy Shields and Kay Pujol, Topeka, Kansas and a sister,
Lila Lee Henry, Coffeyville, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, husband, a step-son, Paul
R. Oard, three brothers, Lloyd, Don and Conan Neville and a sister, Leah Redden. Submitted by Freda Webb
CLARK, CARILYN M.
Carilyn M. Clark, age 86, of Cherryvale died Wednesday,
July 21, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Independence upon arrival. Carilyn M. Clark was born Feb 10, 1924 at Cherryvale,
the daughter of Leo and Delma Ragan. she attended Cherryvale schools and graduated from Cherryvle High School
in 1942.
Mrs. Clark worked at the Ammunition Plant in Parsons
for a time during World War II. On Nov 10, 1944, she was united in marriage to John s. Clark. the family moved
throughout the country, including California, Oklahoma, Texas, Kentucky and Minnesota as well as Germany with the
military before returning to Cherryvale in 1963. Mrs. Clark was proceded in death by her husband on July 30, 1995,
and a grandson Aaron Clark.
Mrs. Clark worked at the Cox Variety Store after
returning to Cherryvale until her retirement. Carilyn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cherryvale and
was very active in church activities including fixing funeral meals for many years and was active until about a
year ago.
Survivors include a son, John S. Clark, Jr., of
Tulsa, Okla; a daughter, Carilyn J. Bernd of Dennis, five grandchildren, Christopher Bernd, Richard Bernd, Kathleen
(Bernd) Arnold. Janna (Clark) Bendure, and Benjamin Clark; seven great-grandchildren; and an identical twin sister,
Marilyn Goodwin of Bartlesville, Okla.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 24, 2010,
at the First Baptist Church of Cherryvale. the Reverend Les Fox, former pastor, officiated. Interment was at
the Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale under the directions of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home of Independence, Kansas.
The family has suggested memorial remembrances to the First Baptist Church of Cherryvale and remembrances will
be received at the funeral home.
The Ragan twins, Carilyn and Marilyn were raised
by their grandparents, Walter A. and Josephine Ragan in Cherryvale, Ks.
