OXENDER, PAULINE JOSEPHINE
Pauline Josephine Oxender, 72, of Cherryvale died
at 6:43 p.m. Friday, July 2, 1993 at Mercy Hospital, in Independence, Kansas. She had been in failing health. Funeral
services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Cherryvale Church of the Nazarene, with Rev. Preston Palmer, pastor,
officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of the Darling and Burns Chapel. The family suggests
memorials to the Church of the Nazarene and contributions may be left at the funeral home of the church office.
Mrs. Ozender was born March 1, 1921, in Numa, Iowa, to Oral F. and Della (Mathison) Large. She grew up and attended
school in Numa, graduating from high school there. In 1939, she married Charles F. Williams in Centerville, Iowa.
The couple later divorced. On Oct. 7, 1977, she married John L. Oxender in Cherryvale. Mr. Oxender died in 1990.
Mrs. Oxender worked for a time at Electra Manufacturing Co. in Independence and at the H. D. Lee Clothing Factory
in Cherryvale. She began employment at Automotive Controls Corp. in Independence in 1968 and worked there until
1978. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Cherryvale and the Sunflower FCE unit. Surviving are three
sons, Jerald Williams, Fredonia, KS; Donnie Williams, Parsons, KS; and Oral L. Williams, Cherryvale, KS; one stepson,
Bobby Williams; two daughters, Kathy Peyton and Joyce Thomas, both of Cherryvale, KS; one brother, Donald Carr,
Iowa; two sisters, Betty Large, Wichita and Aline Chapman, Centerville, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A. J. Riddle Dies Today
Sycamore Resident Had Been Ill a Month
Alvin James Riddle, 51, a resident of Sycamore,
died this morning at 6:30 at his home, following a month's illness. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
the body is at the Rodrick Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Doris, a daughter,
Joyce, a son, James and a step-son, Bobby Edwards of the home. He also leaves a half brother, Ira Lett of Tulsa
and a half sister, Mrs. Margaret Thomas of Sycamore.
Mr. Riddle was born March 21, 1892 at Chelsea,
Okla., where he grew to manhood. He came to Kansas and was a farmer in the Sycamore vicinity until 1930 when he
went to Kansas City, Kas., where he worked as a mechanic.
His marriage to Doris Ishmel took place in Kansas
City, September 17, 1930. he returned to Sycamore a year ago, and had been employed here at the army air base.

MITCHELL, T. W.
Uncle Dies in Tulsa Hospital
T. W. Mitchell, 90, died at Doctor's hospital at Tulsa on Tuesday morning of last week. Funeral services and burial
were at Independence. He was an uncle of Mrs. L. D. Gastineau and the last of eight brothers and sisters.
Mitchell was born and reared in the Crocker, Mo.,
area and was a resident of Independence before moving to Tulsa. He was awarded a 50-year pin from the Masonic lodge
about two years ago and for many years was a member of the Odd Fellows.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Birdie Jenkins
of Tulsa; a son Gordon of Van Nuys, Calif.; and number of nieces and nephews. (Sedan Times - Star - January 25,

Alaska W. WHITE, 83, Coffeyville resident for the
past 33 years, died Tuesday night at his home. Funeral services were held this morning at 10 o'clock at the Mills
chapel, and burial was in Pleasant Valley cemetery near Oswego. Mr. White is survived by his wife, Belle Ellen;
two sons, Bert of Cherryvale, and Delbert of Compton, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Ted Miller of Coffeyville; six grandchildren

Bessie White, four years of age, a grandchild of
Mrs. Miller, who lives in the Third ward, died of membranous croup on Saturday and was buried on Sunday. Bessie
was an unusually bright child, intelligent far beyond her years and her grandmother is nearly broken-hearted over

The funeral of Mrs. Ada T. Wheeler, wife of Mr. Len Wheeler, will take place from the family residence in the First
ward at 10 a.m. tomorrow the services being conducted by Rev. Dr. Wright and Rev. G.W. Bean. Mrs. Wheeler was born
at Jackson, Ohio, Jan. 12, 1871, and was married to Mr. Wheeler at that place Dec. 23, 1891, since which time she
has resided in this city with her husband. It has been eveident for many months past that consumption was preying
upon her system and it was the hope of her husband and friends that removal to a more genial climate would prove
beneficial and arrangements were being made by Mr. Wheeler to find a home in New Mexico but death came before these
plans could be carried out. Her parents at Jackson were notified and it was hoped might be able to attend the funeral
of this their only daughter but word was received yesterday that the mother, who is troubled with heart disease,
is completly prostrated by her bereavement and unable to make the journey and it was useless to longer delay the

Funeral Services Sunday At Jefferson.
Edwin Myers Wheeler, 94, pioneer resident of the Jefferson vicinity, died yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his
home. He had been in ill health for the past five years, and had suffered a paralytic stroke three weeks ago.
Mr. Wheeler had lived on the same farm for 60 years,
and had been active in civic affairs at Jefferson. For many years he was a rural correspondent for the Southeast
Kansas Tribune.
Funeral services will be held at the Jefferson
Methodist church Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, with Elder N.G. Aalborg of the Fort Scott Latter Day Saints church,
and Elder E.F. Coy of Independence, officiating. Burial will be at Point cemetery near Tyro by the Potts funeral
directors.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Hattie Wheeler;
two sons, Roy C. of Berkeley, Calif., and Robin G. of Mill Valley, Calif., and five grandchildren.
Two daughters, and a son preceded him in death.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife,
Clara Broadbent Wheeler, who died in 1924.
Mr. Wheeler was born September 4, 1848, at Cortland,
Mich., and came to Kansas in 1870. His marriage ot Hattie DeLong took place in 1927 at Independence. He was a member

Albert Ross, two years of age, the infant child
of Mr. and Mrs. A.I. Canary, died yesterday afternoon of membranous croup, after a very short illness. Bertha Canary,
who is teaching at Holton, Jackson county, has been notified and is expected to reach home this evening. The funeral
is expected to take place from the family residence on West Myrtle street, at ten o'clock tomorrow afternoon. (The

CASTLEMAN, MAGGIE
Miss Maggie Castleman, a Scotch lady seventy-five
or more years of age, died yesterday afternoon at the residence of E. W. Higgins, in the Fourth ward, of thypoid
fever. The old lady had no relatives in this vicinity and has been maintained for some time entirely by charity.
The funeral took place this afternoon, the expenses being paid by the Scott brothers, she being an old acquaintance

Charles E. Beathe Taken In Death.
Infection Fatal To Eight Year Old Boy.
Charles Edward Beathe, eight-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Beathe, 816 West Pine, passed away at the local
hospital last night at 11 o'clock after an illness of a week, which was caused by an infected sore. It was thought
by the attending physician that acute rheumatism caused from the excess poison, was the cause of his death. The
youngster, a student at the McKinley grade school, became ill last Friday and was not considered in a serious condition
until Wednesday, when he was taken to the hospital.
Charles Edward Beathe was born December 31, 1926,
in Oklahoma City, where he lived with his parents for a short time before coming to this city. Mr. Beathe has been
an employe of the Union Traction company in this city for some time.
Surviving are his parents and several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon
at 2:30 at the Grace M.E. church with Rev. A. C. Stewart, pastor of that church, in charge. Burial will be in Mount

Graveside Services Held Today for George Baehr
Who Died Here Monday.
George Baehr, 72, died at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon at 417 South Fifteenth following an illness which had lasted
several years.
The deceased was born on Feb. 3, 1871 in Alleghany,
Penn. In August, 1918, he came to Independence and he has lived here since then. He was married to Hattie Hoover
on Nov. 15, 1899. She died in 1911, at DuBoys, Penn. One sister is believed to survive but her whereabouts are
unknown.
Graveside services were held this morning at 10
o'clock with the Rev. L.A. Bolerjack of the Nazarene church officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope. The Rodrick

Services Were Held Sunday For Mrs. Carrie Thompson
Funeral Services were held in the Parent chapel Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Carrie THOMPSON of Yorktown. Rev. D.
E. SPRINGER, pastor of the Methodist church, gave a message of comfort. Two favorite hymns, "In the Garden"
and "Have Thine Own Way Lord" were sung by Mrs. D. E. SPRINGER, Mrs. Neva DENISON, Lyle BURGESS and Arthur
DAVIS. Mrs. R. F. WOODS was organist. There were many beautiful flowers.
Burial was in the Tampico Memorial cemetery.
Mrs. Carrie NICELY THOMPSON was born in Coffeyville, Kansas, the daughter of John W. and Judy NICELY on April 8,
1888. She entered the K. A. A. diabetic hospital in South Whitley, Ind. on July 27th and died one week later.
She was married to James THOMPSON in 1912. Her husband preceded her in death four years ago.
She united with the Christian church when a young woman.
Left to mourn her loss are three brothers, Burleigh E. and Andrew A. NICELY of Decatur and Albert E. of Farmer
City, Ill. ****foster son, Pvt. Donald OWENS of Camp Wheeler, Ga., a cousin, John OWENS of Tampico and several
nieces and nephews. She also leaves a host of friends.

Miss Elnora Walker after two weeks illness at her

She was a scholar of the High School. She died as she lived, a good Christian girl. She was 17 years and 6 months

Earl C. Johnson, 54, brother of baseball fame,
died Sunday night of a heart attack at Homewood, Ill., Johnson, an employee of the Sinclair plant at Harvey, Ill.,
Nov. 16. He is survived by his widow, four sons, his mother Mrs. F. E. Johnson, Germantown, Md., two brothers,

RUSSELL, VIRGIL
Virgil F. Russell, 60, of Independence died Monday,
(Dec. 2, 2002.)
Mr. Russell was born Sept. 15, 1942 in Fairview, Mo. to Archie 0. and Luelia P. (Shirley) Russell. He was raised
and educated in Fairview, Mo. He attended Crowder College,
Neosho, Mo. prior to graduating from Franklin Technical Institute, Joplin, in 1974. He served in the U.S. Army
from 1962 to 1964.
On Oct. 16, 1970 he married Vera J. Edwards in
Miami, Okla. They moved to Independence in 1979 where he began working for Lowmaster Engineering. In 1988 they
moved to Cape Cod, Mass. where he worked for Cape Cod Heating and Cooling.
They returned to Independence in 1993 where he
worked for Lee's Heating and Cooling.
He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church
of Independence.
Survivors include his wife, Vera; four children.
Melissa McDaniel, Rusty Russell, and Cheryl Britain, all of Independence, and Christina Butler of Parsons; a brother,
Thomas A. Russell of Port Orchard, Wash; and 12 grand-children.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation hours will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
on Thursday with the family greeting friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be held 2 Friday at the
Mount Hope Cemetery.
The family has suggested memorial contributions

Margaret Jane Paxton, 92, of Elk City, died Saturday
at 1:50 a.m. at Meadowbrook Lodge nursing center.
Graveside services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at
the Oak Hill Cemetery, Elk City, with Don Elliott, pastor of the Community Christian Church, officiating. Friends
may call at the Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home from 12 noon until 6 p.m. Monday, and after 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Memorials are suggested to the Community Christian
Church in Independence. The family may be contacted at the Pat Robbinson home, 2008 N. 10th, Independence.
Mrs. Paxton was born Feb. 28, 1902, in Northern
Ireland, to John and Margaret (Wilson) Nelson. She attended schools in Ireland and came to the United States in
1920.
On June 27, 1945 in Portland, Ore., she married
Carl Paxton and he died in 1961. The couple owned and operated a nursing home in Elk City for many years.
Mrs. Paxton was a member of the Community Christian
Church and the Elk City Senior Citizens.
Survivors include two stepsons, Jack Paxton, Midland,
Texas, and Harold Paxton, Payson, Ariz.; a stepdaughter, Helen Herbert, Ruidoso, N.M.; and eight stepgrandchildren.

Carl A. Paxton Dies Early Today; Funeral on Sunday
Carl A. Paxton, 69, resident of Elk City the past
several years and a retired farmer, died at 3 o'clock this morning at the University of Kansas Medical Center in
Kansas City, Kansas. He had been a patient there two weeks.
Funeral services are to be conducted at 2:30 'clock
Sunday afternoon at the Elk City Christian Church with the Rev. Manley Mott officiating. Interment will be in Oak
Hill Cemetery under the direction of the Potts Funeral Home.
Mr. Paxton was born on December 18, 1891 in Chautauqua
County. He was a son of James Moss and Elizabeth (Hollingsworth) Paxton.
Survivors include the widow, Margaret J. of the home, two sons, Harold D. Paxton, Baker, Calif. And Jack L. Paxton,
Midland, Tex., and a daughter, Mrs. Helen Herbert, Roswell, N.M., and two sisters, Mrs. Don Calkins, Independence,
and Mrs. Pearl Rich, Broken Arrow, Okla. Six grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive.
Preceding Mr. Paxton in death were his parents,
two brothers and two sisters.
He was a member of the Christian Church in Sedan.
Since moving to Elk City Mr. and Mrs. Paxton had

Dalton Lee Full, age 8, of Independence passed
away unexpectedly, Saturday, April 2, 2011 at his Aunt's home in Pittsburg, Kan.
Dalton is survived by his mother, Jennifer L. Full
of Independence, his father, Benjamin J. Fulla nd Stephanie of Fort Hood, Texas, a brother, Marshall C. Full of
Independence. Grandparents, Bruce Kimberlin of Elk City, KS, Patricia Kimberlin of Independence, Robert Full of
Moline and Catherine Latta of Wichita, Kan. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Dalton will lie in state at the funeral home on
Thursday, from noon until 8 p.m. and the family will be receiving friends at that time. Graveside services will
be Friday, April 8, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Elk City with the Rev. Jim Wilburn officiating.

EASTMAN, ROBERT
"BOB" LEON
Robert "Bob" Leon Eastman, 71, of Coffeyville,
Kan., went to be with the Lord March 29, 2011, after suffering a sudden heart attack.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., April 7, 2011 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Coffeyville with the
very Reverend Jerry Adinolfi officiating. Interment will be in Independence at Mt. Hope Cemetery under the direction
of Penwell-Gabef Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 6, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., with
the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel.
Donations can be made to the St. Paul's Episcopal Church and may be left with the funeral home. (Prairie Star,

LONG, LOLA
Lola Long, 86 of Cherryvale, died at 11:25 a.m.
Sunday, December 31, 1989 in Cherryvale Medi Lodge. Mrs. Long was born June 19, 1901 in Jerico Springs, Missouri
to Edward D. and Mary E. Owens. She moved to Cherryvale in 1907 and attended Cherryvale schools. On December
18, 1918 in Independence she married Raymond Long. He died in 1972.
Mrs. Long was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons - Chester E. of Tulsa
- Kenneth W. of Lawrence - Marvin R. of Cherryvale and Raleigh D. of Duncan, Oklahoma; a daughter Margaret L. Confer
of Independence; two brothers L. J. Owens of Sedwick and Carl Owens of Coffeyville; a sister Artie Shafer of Pueblo,
Colorado; 16 grandchildren adn 27 great grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist
church with burial in Fairview Cemetery under direction of the Darling & Burns Chapel. Friends may call at
the funeral home until 9 p.m. today. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

LONG, ALBERT
RAY
Albert Ray Long, 59, of cherryvale, died in his
home Saturday morning, January 24, 1987. Death was attribited to natural causes. He was born August 22, 1927
in Cherryvale to Ray and Lola (Ownes) Long. He attended Cherryvale schools, graduating from Cherryvale High School
in 1945. On June 19, 1946 he married Nellie Newton in Cherryvale. At the time of his death, Mr. Long was president
of Newton Tru-Value Hardware Store in Cherryvale. He had been an electrician, plumber, and refrigeration worker.
Mr. Long was on the state board of directors of the Kansas Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Contractors Association
- was a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the Kansas National Guard US Army; - trustee of the BPOE No. 989 - and
past president of the Cherryvale School Board and Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the United Methodist
Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son Joe of Cherryvale;
two daughters Earlene Whitmore of Cherryvale and Annie Long of San Diego, California; his mother of Cherryvale;
four brothers, - Chester of tulsa - Kenneth of Lawrence - Marvin of Cherryvale - and Raleigh of Duncan, Oklahoma;
a sister Margaret Confer of Independence; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the United
Methodist church, Cherryvale; with burial in Fairview Cemetery in Cherryvale.
