CHERRYVALE -- Mollie Viola Stewart, 82, of cherryvale, died Sunday morning at the Cherryvale Care Center. She had
been in failing health. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Francis
Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. Kevin Trayers, pastor emeritus, officiating. Potts Chapel of Cherryvale is
handling the arrangements.
Friends may call at the church to sign the register from 1 p.m. until the service
Wednesday. Mrs. Stewart was born July 5, 1920 in Cherryvale, the daughter of Oscar and Myrtle (Parrot) Hopkins,
she attended school in Cherryvale. She then worked as a beautician in Denver, Colo., and later worked in electronic
manufacturing in California and Independence until her retirement.
She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Cherryvale Eagles Women's
Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She married Robert Leahew at Cherryale in 1937 and they later
divorced. She married Wilbur Stewart in Denver, Colo., in 1946. He died in 1974. Mrs. Stewart is survived by three
daughters, Eleanor Standly, Kent, Wash., Lois Meeker, Cherryvale and Maxine Delvoras, San Jose, Calif.; a son Terrence
Stewart, Manhattan, three brothers, Oliver Hopkins and Albert Hopkins, both of Cherryvale and Fred Hopkins, Phoeinix,
Ariz.; three sisters, Betty Gross, Cherryvale, Laura Gillman, Douglas, and Ida Shafer, Kansas City, Mo.; 13 grandchildren,

CHERRYVALE -- Betty Jean Gross, 79, of Cherryvale, died at 1:55 a.m. Friday at the Cherryvale Care Center, where
she had been living for some time. Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Potts Chapel of Cherryvale, with the Rev.
Dois Nix, of Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Although the casket
has been closed, friends may register at the funeral home from noon until 5 p.m. Sunday, and after 9 a.m. Monday.
Mrs. Gross was born Feb 1, 1925 in Cherryvale to Oscar and Myrtle (Parret) Hopkins. She married John Copeland Sr.
and he was reported missing in action while serving in the military in 1945. On May 22, 1946 she married Laurence
Gross and he survives. Other survivors include two sons, Gordon Gross, ElDorado, and Rickey Gross, Cherryvale;
Three daughters, Sherri Hosfelt, Debbie Hooper and Denise Schierlamn, all of Cherryvale; three brothers, Oliver
Hopkins and Albert Hopkins, both of Cherryvale, and Fred Hopkins, Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Laura Gillman, Douglass,
and Ida Schafer, Kansas City, Mo.; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.(Submitted by Freda

Laurence C. "Peewee" Gross - April 21, 2006
CHERRYVALE -- Laurence C. "PeeWee: Gross, 85, of Cherryvale died at 4:15 a.m. Friday at Mercy Hospital in
Independence, Kansas. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 25, at Potts Chapel of Cherryvale. Interment was
held in Fairview Cemetery with military honors conducted by Fort Riley. Memorial remembrances are suggested to
Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and they may be left at Potts Chapel of Cherryvale or mailed to P.O. Box 801, Independence,
Kansas 67301. Laurence Cecil Gross was born June 2, 1920 at Independence to George F. Gross and Alfrieda D. (Kettleman)
Gross. He attended schools in Independence and graduated from high school in Independence. After his graduation
he served in the United States Army during World War II in Central Europe as a tank mechanic. He was honorably
discharged in December 1945. On May 22, 1946 at Oswego, Kansas, he married Betty Jean Hopkins, and she preceded
him in death Feb 20, 2004. Laurence worked for Universal Atlas Cement and Lehigh Portland Cement from 1946 until
his retirement in 1983 as general foreman over maintenance. He is a past member of the Independence Gun Club, and
was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. Surviving are two sons, Gordon Gross of Augusta, Kansas and Rickey
Gross of Cherryvale; three daughters, Debbie Hooper, Denise Schierlman and Sherri Hosfelt, all of Cherryvale, seven
grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and his beloved pet Dexter. He was preceded in death by one son John

Oliver C. Hopkins

CHERRYVALE -- Oliver Clyde Hopkins, 84, of Cherryvale, died Monday at Mercy Hospital in Independence. Cremation
has taken place and private services are planned
later. Arrangements are under the direction of Potts Chapel of Cherryvale. Mr. Hopkins was born Oct. 31, 1922 in
Cherryvale to Oscar and Myrtle (Parrett) Hopkins. He attended Timberhill School.
In 1962, in Miami, Okla., he married Germaine Lavkns,
and she preceded in death. Mr. Hopkins was a lead man for Boeing Aircraft for 37 years, retiring in 1986. Survivors
include a son Donald Hopkins, Cherryvale, two brothers, Albert Hopkins of Cherryvale, and Fred Hopkins, Phoenix,
Ariz.; two sisters, Ida Schaffer, of Missouri, and Laura Gillman of Douglass; and two grandchildren.(Submitted

Hopkins - Oct 7, 1997
Germaine Beatrice Hopkins, 67, of Cherryvale died at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in her home. She was born Feb 27, 1930 in
Springfield, Mo., the daughter of George N. and Irene (Laliberte) Lavakis. She grew up and attended schools in
Springfield, later graduating from high school and and attending a business college. Following her schooling, she
was a professional model for many years in New York City area. In 1959 she moved to Wichita. On Feb 14, 1960 she
married Oliver C. Hopkins in Miami, Okla. They lived in Wichita for several years, moving to the Cherryvale area
in 1971. Survivers include her husband; one son, Don Hopkins of rural Cherryvale; two grandchildren, a sister Christine
Lavakis of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and two brothers, William Lavakis of Hampden, Mass., and John Lavakis of Harrisville,
N.H. Cremation has taken place and private family servies will be held at a later time. Potts Chapel of Cheryvale

L. Hopkins - Sept 12, 2007
CHERRYVALE -- Albert Lea Hopkins, 75, Cherryvale, died Wednesday at the Caney Nursing Center. Graveside services
with military honors will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Rusty Hammer, of the First
Baptist Church, officiating. Crfemation has taken place under the direction of Potts Chapel of Cherryvale. Memorials
are suggested to the Cherryvale Library. Mr. Hopkins was born Nov. 6, 1931 in Cherryvale to Oscar and Myrtle (Parrett)
Hopkins. He married Artie Messner on June 2, 1962 in Miami, Okla., and she survives. Mr. Hopkins joined the U.S.
Army in 1953, serving in the Korean and Vietnam wars and receiving his GED. He retired as a sergeant first class
in 1973. He was a member of Heartland Vietnam Veterans and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign wars. Other
survivors include a son, Phillip Hopkins, Cherryvale; a daughter Nancy Chastain, Hennessey, Okla.; a brother, Fred
Hopkins, Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Laura Gillman, Derby and Ida Shaffer, of Missouri. five grandchildren and

Cherryvale - Funeral serivces for Robert E. burns, 88, longtime Cherryvale funeral director, will be at 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Donald G. Burt, interim pastor, officialing. Interment will
be at the Fairview Cemetery under the directions of the Darling and Burns Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral
home from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.,m. until service time on Tuesday at the church, after which the
casket will be closed. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church and may be left with the Darling
and Burns Chapel. Mr. Burns died at 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, where he was undergoing
treatment. He was born Oct 4 1908, in Cherryvale, to Robert W. and Mable E. (Nicodemus) Burns. He attended school
in Cherryvale and then attended the University of Kansas, in Lawrence. Following his schooling he returned to Cherryvale,
where he joined his parents in the operation of the family owned Burns Funeral Home. He retired in 1979. During
world War II he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater until his discharge in 1945. On Sept 11, 1936,
in Okmulgee, Okla., he married Marvelle K. Coyner and she survives at the home. The couple had made their home
in Cherryvale throughout their married life until moving to Garnett several years ago to be near their children.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he had served in various offices over the years, a member
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, a past member and exalted ruler of the Cherryvale Elks
Lodge, and a member of the Cherryvale Masonic Lodge and St. Bernard Commandery of Independence. Other survivors
include a son, Dr. Robert Burns, Topeka; a daughter Susan Padfield, Garnett, three grandchildren and two great

K. Burns - 28 February 1999
CHERRYVALE - Mrs Marvelle K. Burns, 84 of Overbrook, formerly of Cherryvale and the widow of longtime Cherryvale
funeral director Robert E. Burns, died Sunday afternoon at the Brookside Manor Nursing Homein Overbrook, where
she had been making her home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev.
Dale O'Connell, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery under the direction of the Potts
chapel of Cherryvale. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and after 10 a.m. until
service time at the church on Wednesday. The casket will be closed prior to the service. The family suggests memorials
to the First Presbyterian Church and these may be received at the funeral home. Marvelle Klea Burns was born Nov
6, 1914 at Beatrice, Neb., to Claude E. and Oral (Wheelock) Coyner. She attended schools in Cherryvale. On Sept
11, 1936, at Okmulgee, Okla., she was married to Robert E. Burns. The couple made their home in Cherryvale, assisting
in the operation of the burns Funeral Home until moving to Garnett to be near their children. He died in 1994,
and she later moved to Overbrook. She was a member of the D. U.V. American Legion Auxiliary and the Order of the
Eastern Star. Survivors include a daughter Susan E. Padfield, Garnett, a son, Robert W. Burns, Topeka; three grandchildren,
two stepgrandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren. (Submitted by Freda Webb)
ANNA J. WHEELOCK
- May 15, 1994
Anna J. Wheelock, 89 of Cherryvale died Sunday at Mercy Hospital where she had been a patient since May 14. Prior
to her admission to the hospital she had been a resident of the Sunny Acres Nursing Home. Funeral services were
held Wednesday (today) at the First Baptist Church of Cherryvale with Rev. Lex Fox officiating. Internment was
at the fairview Cemetery under the direction of the Darling and burns Chapel. The family has suggested memorial
remembrances to the First Baptist Church. Anna Jane Wheelock was born June 14, 1904, in Labette County, the daughter
of Charles O. Wheelock and Nettie (Parret) Wheelock. She grew up and attended schools in the Cherryvale area.
She later attended Independence Junior College and Emporia State Teachers College where she received her teaching
certificate. She taught school for several years, and later worked in nursing and fressmaking. She worked as
a social worker for the State of Kansas in Chanute and Erie, retiring in the early 1970's. After her retirement,
she worked part time for the Nursing Home in St. Paul, Kan. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cherryvale
where she taught Sunday School and was very active in church activities. She was also a member of the Business
and Professional Women's Organization in Erie and was a member of the Cherry Chums, E.H.U. Surviving are two sisters:
Alberta Lockmiller, of Torrance, Calif., and Wilma Beckett of Tulsa; and several nieces and nephews. (Submitted

Coyner - March 23, 1996
Former Cherryvale resident Paul E. Coyner, 83, of Baltimore, Md., died Saturday, March 23, 1996, at his home in
Baltimore after a long illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning (today) in Knell Mortuary in Carthage,
Mo., with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City, Mo. He was born Oct 12, 1912 in Cherryvale to Claude and
Cleora Coyner. He was an electrician and resided in Baltimore since 1943. He married Florence Lown on Dec. 29,
1938 in Westville, Okla. She survives. Other survivors include one sister, Marcella Burns of Topeka, Kan. (Submitted

COYNER - Dec 25, 1966
CHERRYVALE -- Mrs. Oral L. Coyner, 74, a lifetime resident of Cherryvale, died Sunday at 2:40 p.m. at Mercy Hospital
in Independence. She had been in failing health several years. Mrs. Coyner was born Feb. 6, 1892 at Cherryvale
to William and Hattie (Duff) Wheelock. On Sept. 11, 1910 at Cherryvale she married Claude E. Coyner, who survives
at the home. Other survivors include a son, Paul of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter Mrs. Robert (Marvelle) Burns of
Cherryvale: a sister, Mrs. F. O. (Dolah) Tucker of White Der, Tex.; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Mrs. Coyner was preceded in death by her parents, twin daughters, a sister and two brothers. Funeral services
will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the First Methodist Church with the Rev. John C. Campbell, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery under direction of Burns Funeral Home. (Submitted by Freda Webb)

HOPKINS IS DEAD - 21 Oct 1933
Mrs Sarah Frances Hopkins, 70, wife of Henry E. Hopkins and a resident of this city for over 50 years died Saturday
afternoon at 5 o'clock at her South Butler street home. Cause of death was given as a general run down condition
and complications. She had been ill for several months. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock
from the St. Frances Xavier church with Rev. Father Walsh officiating. Interment, in charge of McDaniel Funeral
service, will be in Catholic cemetery. She was forn December 10, 1862, in Illinois, moving to Cherryvale several
years ago. May 29, 1889 at Cherryvale, she married to Henry Hopkins. Besides her husband the following survive:
One daughter, Mrs. Mae Mansker; three sons, Oscar Hopkins of Cherryvale, Earl Hopkins of Chanute and Harry Hopkins
of Cherryvale; one sister, Mrs. Levine Allison of Nebraska and Charles Suey of California, and 15 grandchildren.

PEARL MINNIE
NORTON - Aug 28, 1987
Pearl Minnie Norton, 79, of 205 W. First, died Friday (Aug 28, 1987 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She was
born Jan 17, 1908 in Miami, Okla., to Frank and Helen (Leonard) Sims. She attended school in a rural school in
the area. On Oct 18, 1945, in Missouri she married Charles Howard Norton. Following their marriage the couple
made their home in Cherryvale, where they owned and operated a produce and feed store. In 1949 they moved to Springfield,
Mo., where Mr. Norton became the district circulation manager of the Kansas City Star. In 1955 the couple moved
to Mound Valley and operated another feed store before moving to Coffeyville in 1965. He then became the circulation
manager at The Coffeyville Journal before retiring in 1977. He preceded his wife in death in July 1980. She was
a member of the First United Methodist Church at Mound Valley. Survivors include a son, the Rev. Wayne Norton
of Haysville; two brothers, Ray Sims of Malvern, Ark. and Jim Sims of North Miami, Okla; two sisters, Esther Ufford
of Hermister, Ore., and Ramona Brubaker of Greenfield, Ohio; and two grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday
in the First United Methodist Church in Mound Valley, with burial at 3:30 p.m. in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery
in Coffeyville. Family visitation will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m. today in the Ford-Wulf-Bruns Colonial Chapel. Friends
may call at the funeral home to register from 8 a.m. Monday until service time at the church in MoundValley. Memorials

WESLEY L. ADAMS
Wesley L. Adams of 139 Whalen Street passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 1974 at approximately 3:30 p.m. He
had been in ill health since March 1973. Wesley Adams was born July 9, 1960 at Independence, to Eugene and Phyllis
(Jones) Adams. He had spent his entire life in Cherryvale. He would have been in the ninth grade this year.
He was a member of the Nazarene Church. Survivors include his parents: three brothers, Dale of Little Rock, Arkansas.
Tom of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Alan of the home: one sister, Marla of the home: grandparents, Mr. &
Mrs Walter Adams of Cherryvale and Mrs. Olive Jones of Corvallis, Oregon; and one niece, Amy Adams of Little Rock,
Arkansas. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Nazarene Church with Rev. Horace Hunsaker officiating.
Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of the Wayne Darling Funeral Home. In lieu of other
remembrances, a memorial fund has been established for the Mid-America Nazarene College at Olathe. Donations may

ADAMS
Irene R. Adams, 93, of Independence, died Sunday at Regal Estate in Independence. Services will be Friday at 2
p.m. at Potts chapel and a graveside committal will follow at Mound Hope Cemetery with Rev. Rick Fincher officiating.
visitation will be Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Potts Chapel of Independence. Memorials are suggested to
the Baptist Missionary Association and may be left with the funeral home. Mrs. Adams was born Dec 3, 1913 to Samuel
G. and Florence (Bilsing) Rogers in Wiuchita. She grew up in Wellington and graduated from Wellington High School
in 1931. On Aug 30, 1936 she married Roy Adams and he died in 1988. She was a homemaker and she cared for her
invalid mother for 22 years. She was involved in a nursing home ministry visiting five nursing homes weekly.

ALLEN
CHERRYVALE - Gussie Allen 92, of Cherryvale, died at 4:55 a.m. Thursday at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Darling & Burns Chapel with the Rev. Robert McGuire, of the
Faith Baptist Church of Andover, officiating. Private burial will be at Fairview Cemetery. Friends may visit
from noon until 6 p.m. Friday and until service time Saturday. A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's
Disease and Related Disorders Association. Gussie Allen was born April 20, 1898 in Arkansas, to William A. and
Ruth (Workman) Hobbs. She attended schools in Pittsburg. She married Albert B. Allen on May 6, 1915. He died
in 1934. She was a member of the first Baptist Church. She is survived by one son, Albert H. Allen, Coffeyville,
one daughter, Mildred tuttle, Cherryvale, six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

ALBERT
"Shorty" ALLEN
Albert "Shorty" Allen, 88, of Coffeyville entered into eternal rest on Monday, November 5, 2007. He
was born February 7, 1919 near Pittsburg, KS to Bryan and Gustava (Hobbs) Allen. He moved with his parents to
Corbin City, KS as a small child. He attended school in Corbin City and Cherryvale. Albert later married Velda
Patterson. Albert served in World War II in the Army Air Force before being honorable discharged as a disabled
veteran. He was a farmer for many years, worked at Parsons Ammunition Plant, Continental Can and retired from
Dixon Manufacturing in 1989. He enjoyed gardening, farming and his animals. He was a member of the United Pentecostal
Church. He is survived by his wife of the home; sons, Howard William and wife, Kay of Coffeyville, Kenny and wife
Sharon, of Liberty, KS; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several step great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mildred Tuttle and grandson, John. Albert will be missed by his family

ROBERT
K. ASHMORE
PLANO, Texas - Robert K. Ashmore, 65, of Plano, Texas, formerly of Altamont, died on Sunday, April 30, 2006, at
his home following a lengthy illness. He was born July 14, 1940 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma o Jesse R. L. and Velma
Mae (Morris) Asmore. the family later moved to Cherryvale, where he attended school and graduated in 1958. He
served in the U.S. Army as a medic from 1958 to 1961. He received an associate's degree in nursing from Labette
Community College in 1978. He worked in the medical profession for 15 years before retiring in 1991 because of
illness. He was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed his family and friends and will be sadly missed by all who
knew and loved him. In 1961, he married Linda Cramer. They later divorced. He married Diane Carnahan on March
3, 1978. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Kari Forester and Heidi Sipes, three sons, Bradley
Ashmore, Robby Ashmore and Johnathan Ashmore; six grandchildren; a great=granddaughter; three brothers, Edward,
Darrell and Danny Ashmore; and two sisters, Patty Adamson and Bonnie Dunivant; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents preceded him in death. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Sparkman Funeral Home, Richardson,
Texas. The service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Assembly of God Church in Lewisville, Texas. Graveside
services will be Monday at Dall-Fort Worth National Cemetery with military honors. (Submitted by Freda Webb)
