Originally organized as Wise County in 1855, the name was changed to Morris County in 1859. Its namesake, Thomas Morris, was an anti-slavery senator from Ohio.
Council Grove is the largest population center and the county seat; it has a rich history that precedes the organization of the county. The Santa Fe Trail ran through the town, and it was an important trading post for many years. What was to become Morris County included the Kaw Indian reservation. A mission, founded by the Methodist Episcopal church, was built on the reservation in 1850.
