PETERSON, Chris Chris Peterson son of Paul and Gruena Peterson was born December 23, 1891 at Bremen, Kansas and passed away at the Norton County Hospital July 25,1977 at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 2 days. Chris grew to manhood in Bremen and attended the rural Bremen grade schools. He enlisted in the United States Army on December 15, 1917 serving in France. He was discharged on June 28, 1919. He worked as a blacksmith at Herkimer, Kansas. On December 23, 1924 in Norton, Kansas, Chris and Matilda Christensen were married. They made their home in Lenora where he engaged in farming. Mrs. Peterson passed away February 28, 1976. Chris had been baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. He was a member of Harmonson-Redd American Legion Post 63. Survivors include: one brother and his wife, John and Margaret Peterson, Bremen, Kansas; two sisters, Christine Peterson, Marysville, Kansas, and Agnes Prichard, Kansas City, Kansas; other relatives and many friends. PORTER, Jacob Reynolds J. R. Porter, 76, a longtime resident of the Dellvale community until he moved to Stafford a few years ago to live with a daughter, died this morning at the Stafford Hospital. Porter had resided with his daughter, Mrs. Gene Field. Funeral services have been tentatively set at Norton Monday at 2 p.m. at the Scott-Barntley funeral Home. He was predeceased by his wife. Other survivors include another daughter, Mrs. Bob Gates of Selden, a brother W.S. Porter of Dellvale, and two sisters, Mrs. Burdge Lofgreen of Beaver City and Mrs. Mina Maxwell of Washington D.C. Interment: Oronoque Cemetery, rural Norton County, Kansas Submitters notes: There is a memorial for Jacob on the Find A Grave web-site. Children were Walter Scott (W. PORTER, Roy Gaylon Former Dellvale Resident Dies of Rare Blood Disease Roy Gaylon Porter, 48, ill since March 10 with a rare blood disease, succumbed Sunday afternoon in a hospital at Garden City. Funeral services will be held in Garden City Wednesday afternoon with burial in the cemetery there. Mr. Porter was born May 19, 1901, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jake Porter, near Dellvale. He attended the rural schools in that community and graduated from NCHS. He later attended and graduated from Kansas State College with an engineer’s degree. Mr. Porter was employed for years by the state highway and was division engineer at Topeka and Garden City. For the past few years he had been employed as an engineer for the Gross Construction Co. Surviving are his wife, one son, Phillip, and a daughter Nancy, all of Garden City; three brothers J.R. and W.S. Porter of Dellvale, and B.N. Porter of Oakland, CA; and two sisters, Mrs. Burdge Lofgreen of Beaver City Nebr. and Mina Maxwell of Garden City. He was predeceased by two brothers, Pearl Porter of Beaver City and S.A. Porter of Chico Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Porter and Mrs. Lofgreen had just returned Friday night from Garden City where they had been with him for a few days. J.R. and W.S. PORTER, Walter Scott Walter Scott Porter, 77, of six miles west and four south of Norton, died suddenly at his home of a heart attack at 7:45 o’clock last night. He had been feeling quite good, and had been out working around his farm when he came into the house and complained of not feeling good. He died shortly afterwards. Mr. Porter was born at Oronoque, March 17, 1890, son of Jacob G. and Nancy Adeline McMullen Porter. He attended Oronoque schools and lived in the Oronoque community all his life, on the same farm home which was his parents’ farm. He was married Sept 19, 1915 to Ella Steel, who survives. He engaged in farming and attended the Christian Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Cleo (Loehe) Stephen of Edmond and two sons, Dr. Melvin A. Porter of Big Springs, Texas and Leland C Porter of Denver. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Nina Maxwell* of Norton and Mrs. Burdge Lofgreen** of Beaver City, Nebr. He was predeceased by his parents, two sons, Ulvin who died in 1940 and Jerry who died in 1945, and six brothers, Pearl R., Jacob R., Sam A., Burr N. Cleve Manuel, and Gaylon. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Scott-Brantley Funeral Home with Darel Boston, minister of the Norton Christian Church, officiating. REED, Richard Richard Reed of Selden was lynched for abducting, raping and murdering Dorothy Hunter, eight year old school girl of that community. Placed in a jail in St. Francis, 1200 armed men got the keys to the jail and Reed, whom they took to a tree on Middle Beaver and left his body hanging dead. REEDY, Wm. Died at his home 2 miles east of Edmond, Sunday morning, Dec. 6th, 1896, Wm. Reedy, age 74 years, 3 mo and 18 days. Mr. Reedy was born in Pike County, Indiana, Aug. 18, 1823, was married May 13, 1846, to Sarah Cook, and lived happy together up to the time of his death - living 19 years in Norton County. He died happy in the Lord, as the family was gathered around him he exhorted them to meet him in Heaven, where parting never comes and a sweet person awaits the faith. REEVES, Flora Elizabeth (Wilderman) Flora Elizabeth Reeves, daughter of David H. and Catherine (Fraser) Wilderman, was born November 8, 1883, in Minden Mines, Missouri, and passed away December 4, 1990, at the Decatur County Hospital Long Term Care Unit, Oberlin, Kansas, at the age of 107 years and 26 days. She attended a Barton County rural grade school in Missouri, high school in Pittsburg, Kansas, and a business college in Pittsburg, Kansas. Flora and Dr. Arthur Reeves were married November 9, 1914, in Pittsburg, Kansas. They moved to Almena, Kansas, in 1915. Two years later, they moved to Oberlin, Kansas, where Dr. Reeves joined his brother, Dr. Eber Reeves, in practicing medicine. Dr. Arthur Reeves died July 4, 1922. Flora and her four childrne returned to Almena, Kansas, in 1936 where she had farming interests. She drove her car until she entered the Decatur County Good Samaritan Center in Oberlin, Kansas, in 1982. Flora was admitted to the Decatur County Hospital Long Term Care Unit in 1984. She was a member of the Almena Congregational Church and a member for 73 years of the Order of Eastern Star Bethlehem Chapter No. 89 in Almena, Kansas. Flora enjoyed traveling and going on excursions with her family. Survivors include a son and his wife, Neil and Grace Reeves of Almena, Kansas; twins, Lois and her husband, C. A. Schamber of Phillipsburg, Kansas, and Ross and his wife, Margaret Reeves of Hoxie, Kansas; and another daughter and her husband, Alice and Jake Kuiper of Almena, Kansas; a goodly number of grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents; husband; 2 sisters, Etta Price and Ida Marsh; 1 brother, Carl Wilderman; and 2 grandchildren. ROLLMANN, Albert Carl Albert Carl Rollmann, son of Carl Thomas and Lillian Tannier Rollmann, was born January 14, 1939 at Los Angeles, California and passed away on July 2, 1978 at Somerville, Texas at the age of 39 years, 5 months and 18 days. Albert grew to manhood in Cortez, Colorado and attended the grade and high schools. He had also attended the Diesel College in Denver. On April 20, 1968, Albert and Sandra Williams were married at Lenora, Kansas. Following their marriage they resided in Dodge City, Kansas, Evergreen, Colorado, Henderson, Colorado and recently in Somerville, Texas. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator and as field supervisor. He was a member of the Dodge City Moose Lodge. Survivors include: his father, Carl Rollmann, Cortez, Colorado; his wife, Sandra of the home; one son, Calvin, two daughters, Carla and Colene, of the home; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Maurice and Esther Williams, Lenora, Kansas; a half-brother LaVerne Thienes, Anaheim, Calif.; a half-sister and her husband, Joan and Chester Tozer, Cortez, Colorado; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother. ROSS, Martin Jay "Marty" Martin "Marty" Jay Ross, 47, Lenora, died July 31 [2007] at the Norton County Hospital. Mr. Ross was born April 26, 1960, in Phillipsburg, the son of Lyle (Sonny) and Lois Ross. He graduated from Eastern Heights High School in Agra in 1978. He attended Cloud County Community College in Concordia and then Fort Hays State University, where he majored in radio and TV and graduated with a degree in Communications. He lived in Denver for about eight years and then returned to Northwest Kansas in 1995. He worked in the telephone directory department at Rural Telephone and eventually became the sales and distribution supervisor. He enjoyed attending auctions and looking for antiques and collectibles and collecting and working on vintage Jeeps. He was an avid sports fan. He was a member of the Church of God in Lenora, an AYSO board member and coach and a former member of the Lenora Board of Education. Mr. Ross was instrumental in bringing American Youth Soccer Organization to Norton County. He coached his son's team for many years and touched the lives of many children. Survivors include his daughter, Kaitlin Lee Ross, 14, and his son, Ethan Lyle Ross, 11, two brothers, Kelly Ross, Ft. Worth, TX and Kirby Ross, Phillipsburg; a sister, Terri Valentine, Houston, TX, and his stepfather, Ben Broyles, Marble Falls, TX. RUNDELL, Laura Ellen (Johnson) Laura Ellen Johnson was born to Reynolds H. and Ellen Carter Johnson on March 20, 1889 on her father's homestead near Woodruff, Phillips Co. Kans. her mother passed away in February, 1891, and her father married Lillie Davis in Sept. 1892. She attended various county schools and lived most of her life in Phillips and Norton counties. On May 7, 1913, she was married to Fred J. Rundell at Norton and began housekeeping on the D. J. Rundell homestead 4 miles west of Almena, Kansas. In 1920 fred and Laura Rundell moved to Norton, where they operated a truck farm until Fred's death on February 22, 1955. She was a member of the Norton Christian Church, and was active in various church and Sunday school works for many years. She had been residing at the Liberal Good Samaritan home ofr the past year until her death on November 30, 1976. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Waldo (Lucy) Graber, and Mrs. Virgil (Freda) Dieterich, both of Liberal, Kansas; a nephew, Jerry Rundell, who lived with Fred and Laura Rundell most of the time from infancy through his high school years; two step-sisters, Alice Gray of Norton and Lena Brown of Almenta; two half-brothers, Mark V. Johnson of Portland, Oregon and Ren H. Johnson of Bentonville, Arkansas; five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends. She was a loving wife and mother and enjoyed the friendship of many people, who were all dear to her. RUSS, Freeman Robert Lenora Veteran Dies at Norton Funeral From Home This Afternoon for Freeman Robert Russ, 40, a Tuberculosis Victim Freeman Robert Russ, 40, of Lenora died shortly after midnight this morning in the Laird Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient only for a couple of days. It was understood he was suffering from a tuberculosis condition. Funeral services were held from the home at Lenora at 2 o'clock this afternoon and burial was in a cemetery there. Mr. Russ was born in Norton County on May 5, 1893, son of Horace Russ and Mary Brewster Russ. He served in the World War and was a Legionnaire. Mr. Russ was married. RUTHERFORD, Jaclyn Lea (Sanborn) Jaclyn Lea "Jackie" Rutherford, daughter of Ivan and Virgie (Gearhart) Sanborn, was born March 29, 1941, 15 miles south of Norton and died in her daughter's home in Larned on December 13, 2008, at the age of 67. She grew up in the Edmond area, attended the Edmond Grade School and graduated from the Lenora High School. She received her Bachelor's of Nursing from Forth Hays State College. On September 17, 1964, Jackie and Ken Rutherford were united in marriage in Armourdale. They made their home in Kansas City, Mo., where Jackie was a nurse at Baptist Memorial Hospital and Ken worked for the Kansas City Power and Light Company. They later moved to Camden Point, Mo., where Jackie was nurse at Spellman Memorial Hospital. On Feb. 2, 1976, they returned to Jackie's grandmother's homestead 14 miles south of Norton to raise their family and take over the family farm. Jackie also worked at the Andby Home in Norton. She retired as the Director of Nursing in 2000, after working there 27 years. Jackie was a member of the United Parish Church in Lenora and was currently serving as President of the Solomon Valley Club and the Heritage Quilter's Club. She was an avid quilter and reader and enjoyed sewing, gardening and cooking. She greatly loved her family and especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow and teaching them to cook, sew and crochet. Survivors include: her husband, Ken Rutherford, Edmond, one son and his wife, one daughter and her husband, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Gary Sanborn. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at the Enfield Funeral Home in Norton, with interment in the Lenora South Cemetery. SARVIS, William M. William M. Sarvis, an old-time Norton boy, brother to Willis and Harmon and Mrs. B. R. Boddy, died in a hospital at Baltimore October 3rd of typhoid fever. Billy Sarvis left Norton eight years ago and went to sea before the mast. He has sailed all over the world and has risen to be second mate when he died. Word was sent to his stopping place at Liverpool, England, of his death and then transmitted to his home here. The body was embalmed and buried at Baltimore. SCHUETTE, Raymond J. Raymond J. Schuette, 81, died April 13, 1993 at Hays Medical Center. He was born January 25, 1912 at Lebanon, Ks, to H.J. and Ella (Jones) Schuette. He married Millie Drake Jan. 1, 1985 at Smith Center. He was the co-owner of Schuette Motor Co., Lebanon and an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, Lebanon, the VFW, Smith Center, the Christian Church, Lebanon and the Butterfield Antique Car Club and the Crankers of Kansas, both of Hays. Survivors include his wife, of the home; a daughter, Susan Buchanan, Lawrence; three stepsons, Gary McFarland, Edwardsville, Ill, Galen McFarland, Hays and Greg McFarland, Olathe; a stepdaughter, Gloria Battin, Ulysses; a sister, Gladys Kennedy, Lebanon and a grandchild, seven step-grandsons and a step-granddaughter. The funeral was at the Christian Church in Lebanon with the Rev. Arden Roush officiating; burial and graveside services were at the Lenora South Cemetery. SELTZER, Zelpha Lorraine "Jodie" (Smith) Zelpha Lorraine "Jodie" Seltzer, daughter of George Washington and Anna Tinsley Smith was born September 16, 1896 at Indianapolis, Iowa and passed away at the Sherdian [sic] County Hospital in Hoxie, Kansas on October 28, 1983 at the age of 87 years, one month and 12 days. Jodie and her parents moved to Cheyenne Wells, Colorado when she was a small child. She attended grade and high school at Cheyenne Wells and moved to Morland, Kansas in August of 1913. On November 19, 1916 at Morland, Kansas "Jodie" and Charles J. Seltzer were united in marriage. They made their home at Morland until 1945 when they moved to Lenora. Charlie passed away on July 12, 1978. Jodie continued to make her home in Lenora. Jodie was a member of the United Parish in Lenora and also a member of the Lenora Chapter of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 296. Survivors included: nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charles, two brothers, Rupert "Pete" and Marlowe and two sisters Vivian and Mable. SHIRK, John P. Civil War veteran John P. Shirk enlisted as Private, Company F 75th Indiana Infantry was severely wounded in his left thigh during the Battle of Chickamauga on September 19, 1863 and spent the rest of his life in army hospitals. After the War he married Sara Regester who was the sister of a deceased comrade in arms of the same company. John and Sara had eight children; John William Shirk, Ella Mae Shirk, George Shirk, Ida Shirk, Joseph Shirk, Abraham Lincoln Shirk, Nancy Shirk, Mary L. Shirk. SHOEMAKER, Arthur Bishop In loving memory of Arthur Bishop Shoemaker Arthur Bishop Shoemaker, son of Augustus B. and Viola Wales Shoemaker, was born at Lucerne, Kansas on September 1, 1902 and passed away at Norton County Hospital on December 21, 1974 at the age of 72 years, 3 months and 20 days. Mr. Shoemaker was raised in the Lucerne area and on February 15, 1924 at Colby, Kansas, he was united in marriage to Eva E. Aumiller. Following their marriage they made their home in several places. At Lucerne, where they farmed, Dresden and Clayton, where Art worked in service stations, and at Norton where he was employed by the State Highway Commission. In 1967 they retired and moved to Lenora where they made their home until his death. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge of Lenora and the United Parish Church. In 1974 Mr. and Mrs. SHOEMAKER had the privilege of sharing their Golden Wedding Anniversary with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Eva, of the home; two sons and their wives, Bernard and Simone Shoemaker, Hayes [sic], Kansas, Donald and Pauline Shoemaker, Colby, Kansas, one daughter and her husband, Nadine and Kenneth Oberkrom, Morland, Kansas. Three brothers, Harry, South West City, Missouri, Joe, Wheeler, Kansas, Ed, Lenora, Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. Nora Duckett and Mrs. Hazel Aumiller, Centralia, Washington; 12 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Victor Kindt, a brother, Luther, an infant brother, a sister, Mrs. Anna Teel, an infant sister, 2 brothers-in-law, Everett Duckett and Robb Aumiller and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Losie Shoemaker. SHOEMAKER, Edward G. Edward G. Shoemaker, son of Augustus B. and Viola D. Wales Shoemaker, was born at Lucerne, Kansas on April 13, 1899 and passed away at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas on April 19, 1978 at the age of 79 years and 6 days. Ed grew to manhood in the Lucerne community and attended the rural grade schools there. On May 21, 1921, Ed and Lena Leota Aumiller were married at Colby, Kansas. They lived at Lucerne until 1933 when they moved to Lenora. They owned and operated the grocery store there. Mrs. Shoemaker passed away on January 5, 1977. He attended the Lenora United Parish Church, was a member of the Lenora I.O.O.F. Lodge No. a member of the Lenora A.F. & A.M. No. 181, he had served as Mayor and was a City Councilman for Lenora and also was a Norton County Commissioner. Ed was very interested and active in all community affairs. Survivors include: two daughters and their husband, Muriel Darlene and Allen Day, Lenora, Kansas, Lyla Havere and Wesley Wilson, Sunnyvale, Calif.; two sons and their wifes, Stanley Edward and Agnes Shoemaker, Alma, Nebr.; two brothers, Harry F. and his wife, Onah Shoemaker; South West City, Mo.., Joe T. Shoemaker, Wheeler, Kansas; 23 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great great grandchild; other relatives and many friends. SHOEMAKER, Eva E. (Aumiller) Eva Esther Shoemaker, daughter of Carlton Young and Anna Robb Aumiller was born July 11, 1903 at Hoxie, Kansas and passed away at her home in Lenora, Kansas on June 9, 1987 at the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 28 days. She attended grade school at Hoxie and had graduated from the Hoxie High School. On February 15, 1924, Eva and Arthur Bishop Shoemaker were married at Colby, Kansas. After their marriage they lived at Lucerne, Dresden, Clayton, Oronoque, Norton and Lenora. Mr. Shoemaker passed away in December 1974. She was a member of the Lenora United Parish Church, the Lenora Rebekah Lodge No. 381, and Lenora O.E.S. Chapter No. 296. SHOEMAKER, Lena Leota (Aumiller) Lena Leota Shoemaker, daughter of Carlton Young and Anna Louise Robb Aumiller, was born March 16, 1898 in Phillips County, Kansas and passed away at her home in Lenora, Kansas January 5, 1977 at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 20 days. Lena grew to womanhood and lived with her parents in Phillps, Sheridan and Norton counties. She attended Sheridan County schools. On May 21, 1921, Lena and Edward G. Shoemaker were married at Colby, Kansas. They made their home at Lucerne, Kansas until 1933 moving to Lenora where they lived since. She was a member of the Lenora United Parish Church, Lenora Order of the Eastern Star, Lenora Rebekah Lodge, Portia Federated Study Club, Lenora E.H.U. and Four-Fours Pinochle Club. Survivors include: her husband Edward of the home; two daughters and their husbands, Muriel Darlene and Allen Day, Lenora, Kansas; Lila Havere and Wesley Wilson, Sunnyvalle, Calif.; two sons and their wives: Stanley Edward and Agnes Shoemaker, Lenora, Kansas; Merrill Dee and JoAnn Shoemaker, Alma, Nebraska; three brothers and their wives, Calvin and Bessie Aumiller, Radium, Kansas; Irvin and Helen Aumiller, Wheatridge, Colorado; Dallas and Rachel Aumiller, Denver, Colorado; four sisters, Eva Shoemaker, Lenora, Kansas; Sylvia Wente, Hill City, Kansas; Marvis and husband Dale St. John, Grand Junction, Colorado; Anna Lou and husband Frank Lubinski, Denver, Colorado, one sister-in-law; Hazel Aumiller, Kennesburg, Colorado; 23 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; other relatives and many friends. SIMPSON, Jube Jube Simpson Type of Officer: Night Marshal Jurisdiction: Lenora Death Date: 11/21/1932 Circumstances of Death: Although there were no witnesses to the killing it is believed that Night Marshal Simpson was overpowered at the Home Oil Station in Lenora by two men who had intended to loot various businesses in town. SLEEPER, Unknown Last Sunday, while B & M morning freight was making up its full train at Norcatur a brake many by the name of Sleeper who live sin Republican City, when making a coupling in some unknown way fell beneath the car and was instantly killed, the wheels running over his chest and rolling him about 80 feet. SMITH, Chester E. Chester Eugene Smith, son of Owen and Ermina (Rose) Smith was born June 5, 1870 at Carthage New York and passed away at his home northwest of Logan, Kansas on May 15, 1948 at the age of 77. He came with his parents to Nebraska at the age of four and when 8 years old the family moved to Kansas and located 8 miles north west of Logan where he remained until death called him. On November 2,1904 he was married to Ella Shinn. Of this union four children were born, all of whom are living. Mr. Smith was a farmer, having taken an active part in his work untol health failed him two years ago. He was patient and considerate of others, never complaining during his long illness; being always a kind husband and father. Surviving Mr. Smith is his wife,Ella; two daughters- Mrs Thelma Snyder and Leola Smith both of Fremont Ohio, and two sons, Dale who is a patient of Criles Veteran Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio and Glenn of the home; three grand chrildren, a brother, Phillip of Seattle, Wa and a host of other relatives and friends. SMITH, John William Death came to John William SMITH on Saturday afternoon, December 25, 1971, at his farm home near Lenora, Kansas. He had been in poor health since June and had been in the Norton hospital from December 7 to the 19th. He had been up about the house dur- near Bogue, Kansas, in 1913. After a year at Bogue tack and passed away in a short time. John was the son of Hiram P. and Laura Leona FLANDERS SMITH and was born on November 14, 1895 at Santa Rosa, Dekalb county, Missouri. He attended the grade school at Santa Rosa. He and his parents and his brother Lawrence moved from Missouri to near Bogue, Kansas, in 1913. After a year at Bogue they moved to their present farm home near Lenora. This has been his home for 56 years. John and his brother Lawrence have always lived together, having lived with their parents, on the farm, and since their parents deaths. He and his brother and sister-in-law Alice have continued living on the farm. He farmed and raised stock. He is survived by his brother Lawrence and his wife Alice of the home; one nephew Robert SMITH also of the home; and several cousins He was preceded in death by his mother in May, 1947 and his father in February, 1948. SMITH, Karl G. Karl G. Smith son of Orin P. and Sara RIDDLE SMITH as born February 10, 1898 at Beatrice, Nebraska and passed away August 27, 1977 at the St. John's Hospital in Salina, Kansas at the age of 79 years, 6 months and 17 days. As a small child, Karl lived in Edmond, Kansas with his family before they moved to Lenora when he was four years old. He attended the Lenora grade schools and graduated from the Lenora high school. He had served his country in WW I in the Army. On October 26, 1935 at Marysville, Kansas Karl and Velma HATCHER were married. They made Lenora their home where we was self-employed as a electrician. He was a businessman in the Lenora community for over 50 years. He attended the Lenora United Parish Church, he was a 50 year member of the A.F. & A.M. Lodge No. 181 at Lenora, a member of the American Legion Post No. 356 at Bogue, and his hobby was ham radio operator. Survivors include: his wife, Velma, of the home; one brother L. A. SMITH, Hill City, Kansas; one sister Harriet DOUGHERTY, Plainville, Kansas; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Orin P. SMITH. SMITH, Lawrence Luther Lawrence Luther Smith, son of Hiram and Lura (Flanders) Smith was born January 9, 1898 in Santa Rosa, DeKalb County, Mossouri and passed away at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas on April 20, 1988, at the age of 90 years, 3 months and 11 days. He grew to manhood in the Santa Rosa area and attended the rural grade school. He was united in marriage to Alice Dora Ford on November 12, 1932 in WaKeeney, Kansas. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in 1987. They made their home in Bogue for one year before moving to the farm in Lenora where they have lived since. He had helped with trail drives when he was 16, driving livestock from Bogue to St. Francis. He was known as an expert cornshucker and and one time was the State Horseshoe Champion. He attended the United Parish church, served as the Modell Township Trustee fro 32 years, served on the Lenora School Board fmor many years and was a member of the Farm Bureau. Survivors include his wife, Alice, of the home; one son and his wife Robert and Debbie Smith, Lenora, Ks; three grand children, Tawny, Lacey and Jeannie Smith, Lenora, Ks and many other relatives and friends. SMITH, Thomas Clifford Thomas Clifford Smith, son of Eugene and Myrtle Snyder Smith was born March 18, 1901 at Red Cloud, Nebraska and passed away at the Norton County Hospital, Norton, Kansas on June 8, 1983 at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 20 days. When Clifford was an infant the family came to a farm near Bird City, Kansas. In 1915 the family moved to the Clayton Community. He attended Rural Grade School near Bird City and also attended the Clayton High School. On October 10, 1928 Clifford and Amy Marie Hager were united in marriage. Amy passed away on December 8, 1935. To this union four sons were born Bill, Robert, Walter and Larry. On September 6, 1941 Clifford and Emma Eichenberger were united in marriage. To this union one daughter and three sons were born Arline, Alvin, John and Vern. Clifford had farmed in the Clayton area until he retired and moved to Norton in 1974. He attended the Good Hope Community Church. Served on the school and township boards for many years. Member of the Lenora I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 439. He had a great love for his family and farming. Survivors include his wife Emma; six sons Bill and Robert E. Smith both Denver, Colorado; Larry and wife Iris Smith and Alvin and wife Cheryl Smith all from Norton, Kansas; John and Laquita Smith, Liberal, Kansas and Vern Smith, Beloit, Kansas; one daughter Arline King, Phoenix, Arizona; one sister Eva Saltzman, Troy, Kansas; eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Amy, one son Walter, two brothers Cecil and Marion, one sister Alice and infant twin grandchildren. SPURLIN, Cora Died - September 24, 1891, Cora, daughter of David and F. A. Spurlin age 15 years, 4 months, 20 days. After an illness of about four weeks duration, borne patiently and uncomplainingly, Cora fell asleep to awake no more in this world. Hers was a pure Christian life and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Her relatives and friends have the sympathy of the entire community. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mann Sept. 25, 1891. STEINBROOK, Earl Earl Steinbrook was kicked on the abdomen by a horse last Friday, and after intense suffering died on Monday. Funeral took place from his home on Tuesday at 2 o'clock, and the body was buried in the Norton Cemetery. Earl was an industrious hard working young man, full of life and health, with a bright and prosperous future before him, but striken down in his early manhood.
