TILLOTSON, Maxine (Middleton) Maxine (Middleton) Tillotson, 88, Topeka, formerly of Lenora, died on March 16, 2008 at Brewster Place Healthcare Center in Topeka. Born in Topeka in 1910, she was the only child of Frank and Wilhelmina Middleton. She grew up in Potwin and attended Topeka High School and Washburn College. While in College she met John Charles Tillotson when they both were members of a college play. She and John were married in 1935 at Grace Cathedral in Topeka. After graduation, she taught in Johnson County and then began a Social Work studies at the University of Kansas. When she and Mr. Tillotson were married they moved to his home county of Norton, where he set up a law practice as a third-generation attorney. The couple, (known to many as Tilly & J.C. or "Chick"), had two children, John Clinton and Carolyn Louise. When the children were both in college, Mrs. Tillotson resumed her studies, attending Ft. Hays State College and earning a Master's Degree. In the meantime, Mr. Tillotson had been elected Norton County Attorney and was the Northwest Kansas campaign manager for Bob Dole. His Republican activitism, along with her strong support saw the Lenora native further his political career, being elected to the Kansas House of Representatives serving as Speaker Pro-Tem followed by election to the Kansas Senate as Vice President. At this time, the Norton Tuberculosis Sanitarium, which had been unoccupied as a healthcare facility, was brought back to life due to the diligence and interest of the Tillotsons; with the Senator's legislative direction in Topeka and her community strength and support, the Norton State Hospital came into being in the old facility and new jobs were created for the Norton area as well as a caring and understanding home for persons who were mentally challenged. Mrs. Tillotson was justifiably proud of the accomplishment and she became their Director of Public Relations and Volunteers as well as the editor of the Kan-San, the hospital's monthly newspaper. Representing the North West Kansas Senatorial District, the Tillotsons traveled extensively on goodwill and fact-finding trips all around the world, most especially to what then were Communist-Bloc countries. Once, she was even detained and her camera film destroyed, for taking a picture of a military officer at the airport in Budapest, Hungary. Her favorite cities were Vienna, Austria and Paris, France and she spoke French commendably. During her long and busy career, she was a member of and served as an officer in several organizations including: of the Kansas Council of Women; Kansas Press Women's Club; the Native Daughters of Kansas; the Republican State Women's Club and Chair of the Norton County Chapter of the American Red Cross, from which she received her 50-year pin in recognition of her many years of volunteer service; and board member of the Norton County Hospital, where she organized and supervised the Candy Stripers and the Grey Ladies. For many years, she was active in the Women's Society of Christian Service for the United Methodist Church. She was a director at the Norton Church when the new facility was planned and built. Her hobbies included: golf, baking, ceramics and bridge. Mrs. Tillotson was predeceased by her husband, J.C. and her son, John but is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Norman Smith of Middleburg, VA, as well as a granddaughter, Cathy Tillotson and grandson Charles Tillotson of Leavenworth and great-grandsons Cole and Clayton Tillotson. Inurnment was in the Lenora South Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Brewster Place Employee's Fund or the Brewster Place Chaplain's Fund 1001 SW 29th St., Topeka, Ks 66611.
