SGT. DONALD D. SMITH

Sgt. Donald D. Smith, infantry, of Eskridge, was one of three Kansas soldiers the War Department announced Saturday the awarding of the Silver Star. The award was as follows:

Sgt. Donald D. Smith, infantry, of Eskridge, for courage and devotion to duty which contributed materially in preventing the loss of his tank in Italy. The citation states that February 11, 1944, his tank was engaged in a fire fight with the enemy at close range and he was forced to leave it temporarily when struck by fire from antitank guns. Later he returned and moved the tank to a covered position, where it was repaired and returned to service after exposing himself to enemy fire. Jacob Weimer, Who Was Taken Prisoner By Japs In December, 1941, Alive.

A telegram from the War Department was received this (Wednesday) morning by Mr. and Mrs. George Weimer, of Olivet, stating their son, Jacob Weimer, who was taken a prisoner by the Japs on Wake Island on December 24, 1941, was alive and had recently arrived at Guam.
The family has never received but three or four letters and cards from Jacob since he was taken prisoner and these have been anxious days for the family since V-J day hoping they might learn Jacob was alive. He is 23 years old. (The Journal Free Press, Wednesday, September 19, 1945, transcribed by Jim Laird)
