ARBUTHNOT, WILLIAM SHERMAN
William Sherman Arbuthnot, president of the Farmers State Bank of Bennington was born in Oil City, Pennsylvania,
March 18, 1868, son of James G. and Kate (Fogal) Arbuthnot. The father, a farmer and merchant, was born in Pennsylvania,
and died in Belleville, Kansas. His ancestry was Scotch-Irish. His wife, Kate, was born in Germany, and died in
Belleville.
Educated first in country school, William Sherman Arbuthnot later attended Kansas State Agricultural College, from
which he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Science. He later attended Chicago Veterinary College where
he received the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Surgery.
A Republican, Mr. Arbuthnot served two terms as state senator from the 31st district of Kansas. He engaged as a
druggist at Republic city for four years and at Lebanon 20 years. For the past 15 years he has been in the banking
business.
In February 1898 he was married to Mary Stanfield at Belleville. She is a native of Republic City and the daughter
of Richard T. Stanfield. There are three children, Richard, Dorothea and Marie. Richard is a bank examiner and
Dorothea is married to Lawrence Austin, who is in the drug business in Bennington.
Mr. Arbuthnot is a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Bennington, the Lions Club, the Modern Woodmen of
America, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Masons (32nd degree, Shrine). Residence: Bennington. (Illustriana
