JAY CARROLL EVERETT
The Reverend Jay Carroll Everett, clergyman of the Presbyterian Church, was born in Turin, New York, January 30,
1871, son of Edward William and Mary Ann (Allen) Everett. The father, a general merchant, was born in Remsen, New
York, April 3, 1843, and died at Emporia, May 12, 1920. He served as postmaster at Olpe, from 1893 until 1897.
His parents were the Reverend Robert Everett and Elizabeth (Roberts) Everett, who were natives of Denbigh, Wales.
Mary Ann Allen was born in Turin, July 9, 1847, and prior to her marriage taught in the country school in her old
home district. She died at Emporia, on June 14, 1919. She was the daughter of Stephen Parsons and Hannah (Michel)
Allen, who were American born.
Dr. Everett attended Princeton Theological Seminary, and in 1898 received the degree of Master of Arts from Princeton
University. In 1915 he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from the College of Emporia.
Before he entered the ministry Dr. Everett was in business with his father, and since that time has held the following
pastorates, Colby, Oakley, Norton, Wakeeney, Topeka (Third Presbyterian Church), Paola, Topeka (associate pastor
of First Presbyterian Church), Larned, and Minneapolis. He has served as trustee of the College of Emporia for
eight years, and during the year 1927-28 was moderator for the synod of Kansas. Since 1903 he has been permanent
and stated clerk of that synod. As stated clerk he has published the year book or minutes of the synod annually.
On June 1, 1899, he was married to Elisabeth Katherine Fleming in Pueblo, Colorado. Mrs. Everett was born in Menno,
Pennsylvania, December 4, 1873. To Dr. and Mrs. Everett three children were born, Esther Catherine, January 5,
1901, who married Floyd Slade McNair; Mary Rebecca, June 22, 1904, who died the same day; and Helen Frances, May
10, 1907.
Dr. Everett is an independent Republican. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club, and served as first president of
the Larned organization from 1925 until 1926. He was the first vice president of the Lions Club of Minneapolis
from 1930 until 1931.
During the World War Dr. Everett was county chairman of the Young Men's Christian Association and Knights of Columbus
drives and was chairman of the Miami County Red Cross. He is a Mason.

John E. Ewart
John E. Ewart, a merchant for many years, was born in Bellymena, County Antrim, Ireland, February 18, 1862, and
died at Minneapolis, Kansas, February 20, 1931. He was the son of Alexander and Sarah (McBride) Ewart, who came
to the United States in 1859, from Ireland. The father was born August 17, 1835, and farmed until his death at
Minneapolis, on May 2, 1890. The mother, born October 7, 1839, died at Minneapolis, March 25, 1918.
John E. Ewart was educated in the district schools of Kansas, and in 1880 began in the mercantile business as
a clerk. He was the owner of Ewart's Grocery at the time of his death. He was a Republican.
On October 7, 1885, he was married to Minnie Ett Elston at Minneapolis. She was born in Ross, Indiana, March
23, 1868. To them two children were born, Chester Harold, on July 31, 1892, who is married to Phyllis Lot; and
John Lewis, January 20, 1898, who is married to Dorothy Hile. Both are engaged in the mercantile business.
Mr. Ewart was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Red Cross, and the Chamber of Commerce at Minneapolis.
