Pottawatomie County was organized in 1856. It was named for the Pottawatomie tribe, which at the time of statehood called this area home; besides the cities listed at the left, the communities of Aikins, Barret, Duluth, Fostoria, Laclede and Swamp Angel lie within the boundaries of Pottawatomie County.
