MRS. DANIEL MURPHY RETURNED HOME Mrs. Daniel Murphy returned to her home in Pratt county Wednesday morning after two weeks pleasant visit with her grandmother, Mrs. Sophia Grindle. (Haven Independent, Haven, Reno County, Kansas, March 20, 1897, page 3, column 2, submitted by Rose Stout) A VETERAN ROCK ISLAND ENGINEER DEAD PRATT, KAS., Dec. 6---Fred Gifford, said to have
been the oldest engineman on this division of the Rock Island, died in a hospital in Topeka today. He was taken
ill about a year ago, but did not give up his work until three months later, when he suffered a nervous breakdown.
The body will be taken to Ellis, Kas., tomorrow. Dr. E. M. HAWKINS, OF PRATT CO., COMMITS SUICIDE WITH A REVOLVER PRATT, Kan., Sept. 2---Dr. E. M. Hawkins committed
suicide at his home in this city at about 1 o'clock this morning. He was lying in bed with his wife and child
when suddenly and without a word he raised himself in bed and sent a bullet crashing through his brain from a 32
calibre pistol. In the absence of any known cause the rash act is supposed to have been superinduced by financial
troubles.
