HOUK, LYSANDER

The Well - Kansas Jurist Passes Away in Chicago

Special to the Capital

Newton, Kan., Feb. 12 - Lysander Houk, formerly of Hutchinson, and for ten years judge of this district, died this morning in Chicago, from paralysis. He had been an invalid for more than a year. His body will be sent to Hutchinson this evening, over the Rock Island road.

Judge Houk one of the most conscientious painstaking and able jurists who ever occupied a bench in Kansas was a native of Tennessee. He was a captain in the Confederate Army during the late war and some years after the close of the war settled in St. Louis where he practiced law. He came to Kansas in 1871 and made his home at Hutchinson for twenty years as county attorney of Reno county and in 1880 became district judge of this, the Ninth judicial district.

Two years ago his health began to "fail" and he has gradually grown worse ever since. He went to Chicago shortly after for medical treatment, but for some time his death has been imminent. (Topeka Weekly Capital, February 15, 1898, page 2)
