The area that now comprises Riley County was formerly the home of the Kansa Indian tribe. By 1854, however, when the lands in that part of Kansas were opened to white settlers, the Kansa had already left. The government felt that a military reservation was necessary to keep order when the settlers started arriving, and Camp Center was opened in 1853. The name was changed to Fort Riley, named after Major General Bennet C. Riley, former Commander of Ft. Leavenworth, Mexican War Veteran, and last territorial Governor of California. |
