[GEORGE] HEINRICH "HENRY" BANGERT 1877-1917
Henry Bangert was born at Colony Oleschna (Dietel) Russia [a Province of Saratov, Russia], December 7, 1877,
and died April 15, 1917, in Kansas City at Bethany Hospital, aged 39 years, 4 months and 8 days. He was buried
in the cemetery of the German M. E. Church, Ebenezer, April 17, 1917. He came to America with his parents in July
9, 1892, settling at Russell, where his home has ever since been. In January 1904 he was married to Mary [Maria
Elizabeth "Mary"] Batt, who died two years later, leaving two daughters to mourn her loss. In 1907 Mr.
Bangert was again married to Amalia Hettinger, six children being the result of this union. He leaves to mourn
his death his wife and eight small children, his parents and two sisters. In 1912 Mr. Bangert became a member of
the German M.E. Church, Ebenezer, from which his funeral was conducted by his pastor, Rev. G. F, Meyer, who preached
the sermon from John XVI: 22nd verse. He stood high in the community in which he lived, and his taking away so

JOHANN HEINRICH "JOHN HENRY" BANGERT 1848-1924
John Henry Bangert died last Saturday morning, July 19, from apoplexy, Mr. and Mrs. Bangert were on their way
to their daughter's home and when crossing the Smoky bridge, Mr. Bangert had car trouble in making the hill just
south of the bridge. In stooping over to make an adjustment he collapsed and died instantly. John Henry Bangert
was born August 26, 1848, at Dietel, Russia, and came to Russell city or on the farm south of town. For the past
several years they have made their home with their children, who live south of the Smoky River. At the time of
his death he was 75 years, 10 months, and 22 days old. Mr. and Mrs. Bangert had four children, two of whom preceded
Mr. Bangert in death; Henry Bangert who died six years ago, and Sophia Bangert who died five years ago. He leaves
to mourn his death his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Fred Michel and Mrs. Jacob Flegler, 24 grandchildren, and two
sisters, Mrs. Michel and Mrs. Hettinger, of Greeley (Greeley) Colo. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon
with Rev. John Shue, pastor of the south German Methodist Church, in charge. Burial was made in the cemetery there.

MARIA ELIZABETH "MARY" (BATT) BANGERT 1882-1906
Mrs. Henry Bangert, who lived on the old Frier place near the Smoky, died Sunday after an illness which began
with the birth of a child (Mary Bangert) a few weeks ago. The deceased was Miss Mary (Elizabeth) Batt and her home
was in Nebraska where she was born. [Mary Elizabeth Batt was not born in Nebraska. She was born in Dietel, Russia
on July 3, 1882.] She was married two years ago and came to this county at that time. She leaves two children,
one a year old (Ohrla Bangert), and the other but a few weeks, (Mary Bangert who lived to adulthood). Her parents
have been with her for the ten days previous to her death. The funeral service was held Tuesday from the German
Methodist Church on the Smoky, and the burial was in the cemetery near by (Ebenezer German M. E. Cemetery). Rev.

LACKMANN, EVA ELIZABETH
Eva Elizabeth (Lackmann) Bangert is buried next to her husband in the old "Ebenezer M.E. Church Cemetery"
in Russell, Kansas. The Church was on the corner, and the cemetery was next to the church. The church was sold
in 1928 and the following year moved to WaKeeney, Kansas, and converted into a service station. There is a large
tombstone with the name " BANGERT" and engraved are the words in German "HIER RUHEN IN FRIEDEN"
and around this tombstone are; Johann Heinrich "John Henry" Bangert (1848-1924), his wife Eva Elizabeth
(Lackmann) Bangert (1856-1941); a daughter Sophia Bangert (1883-1914), son Georg Heinrich "Henry" Bangert

HAGEMAN, BERNARD
Overdose of Pills Killed Teacher
Russell, KS --- A coroner’s jury found Tuesday night that the death of Bernard Hageman, 26 years old Russell sixth
grade school teacher, was accidental.
Hageman, who was unmarried, was found dead in his bed Sept. 22.
The jury, which met after results of an autopsy were received, held death was from accidental poisoning from an

RUSSELL, KS – Cecil H. Martin, 48, Russell, died Tuesday of injuries he suffered in a truck accident 4 ½
miles west of Lancaster earlier in the day. Born Aug 23, 1923, in Rio Arriba County, N.M., he married Edna Mae
Isaac Nov. 29, 1965, at Wichita.
He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Hutchinson.
Survivors include the widow; daughters: Cecillia, of the home; Karen, San Diego, Calif.; mother: Mrs. Charles H.
Martin, RFD 1, Hutchinson; sister: Mrs. Mary Juanita deck, RFD 1, Hutchinson; brothers: James, Russell; Clyde,

ANDERSON, MARY ELIZABETH MEHARG
Mrs Mary Anderson - Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel and Margaret (Hepburn) Meharg was born December 14, 1868
at Kankakee, Illinois. She died at her home, 316 East Eighth St, Russell, KS on November 9, 1957, Saturday evening
at 8 pm. Her age was 88 years, 10 months and 26 days.
In 1873 she came with her parents to Kansas. The family settled in Russell County and she has been a resident
of Russell since that year. She attended school, grew to womanhood on the farm home of the Shannon Community. On
November 27 1887 she was united in marriage to Christopher Anderson. There were eight children born to this marriage;
one son, Nelson, preceded her in death. These are but facts or statistics in the life of Mrs Anderson. But to her
children, grandchildren, sisters, neighbors and friends, her life does not have to be eulogized. Along with rearing
a large family through those many years of tribulations with which so many of these pioneer mothers contended with,
she was always ready to extend a helping hand to anyone that was hungry or in distress. As a practical nurse she
cared for a lot of older people in her home before the time of Nursing Homes.
So to treasure her memory are: her children, Mrs Tora Rock, Navarre Kan; Mrs Susie Luckenbough, Abilene Kan;
Chris Anderson, Ponca City Okla; Arnie Anderson, Russell Kan; Tom Anderson, Bunker Hill, Kan; Fred Anderson, Russell,
Kan; John Anderson, address not known at this time. There are 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Also two sisters, Mrs Josephine Dietrich, Hoisington, Kan; Mrs Robert Heckman, Temple, Penn; two brothers and three

ANDERSON, CHRISTOPHER
Christopher Anderson was born December 25th 1851 in Bergen, Norway, and departed this life January 10th 1933,
at the Larned State Hospital, Larned KS, age 81 years and 16 days. He came to America before he was 21 years old,
and for several years was a gold miner in Colorado, where he endured many of the hardships of the miners of that
day, as well as receiving some prosperity. He came to Russell county, Kansas in the year 1887, and settled on a
farm 12 miles south of Russell, which farm he still owns. November 19, 1887, he was united in marriage to Mary
Elizabeth Meharg, and to this union eight children were born, all of whom are living with the exception of a son
Nelson E Anderson who died January 7 1913.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife Mary E Anderson of Russell KS, and his children: Tory G Rock of Navarre
KS; Susie B Luckenbaugh of Navarre KS; Christ A Anderson of Marland OK; Arnie N Anderson of Russell KS; John T
Anderson of Long Island NY; Tom B Anderson of Russell KS; Fred R Anderson of Honolulu HI; two brothers: Henry Anderson
of Marland OK and Arnie Anderson of Ponca City OK, who are unable to be present because of sickness. He also leaves
one sister Christina who lives in Bergen, Norway.
Funeral services are being held this afternoon at the Shannon Friends Church with Rev TH Parrott of the Methodist
church officiating; burial in the Shannon Cemetery, with Deines Brothers in charge.

wife of Charles "Chuck" sharing 27 years together. Cherished mother of Ryan, Evan and Kristen. LouAnn
is also survived by her sister, Ruth Weeks Lanterman, mother-in-law, GayAnn Davis, father-in-law and mother-in-law,

MARGARET (BANGERT) MICHEL 1869-1947
Margaretta, daughter of Heinrich and Elizabeth Banger, was born on December 12, 1869, at Tittle (Dietel), Russia.
In early infancy she was baptized, and at the age of 14 years she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In the year
1899 she was united in holy wedlock to Fredrick Michel. To this union 12 children were born, two of whom preceded
her in death.
In the year of 1891 [her husband with Jacob Flegler and Jacob Hilderman came to U.S. She and her daughter arrived
July 9, 1892 with her parents and siblings] ]they came to America and settled on a farm eight miles south of Russell,
where they resided until 1936, when they retired after 45 years, and moved to the city of Russell. On May 3, 1945,
her devoted husband passed away.
On Saturday, December 13, she felt her usual self, spending some time downtown shopping, but late that evening
suffered a heart attack from which she quietly passed away early Sunday morning, December 14. She reached the age
of 78 years and two days.
She leaves 10 children to mourn her passing: Mrs. Mary Weimaster, Fred Michel, Mrs. Sophia Strecker, Peter Michel,
Willaim Michel, Leo Michel and Ruben Michel, all of Russell, George Michel and Henry Michel, both of Bunker Hill,
and John Michel of Downs. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Jacob Flegler, Sr., of Russell, and 25 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held December 17, from the home at 2, and at 2:30 p.m. from St. John's Lutheran Church,
Russell, with Rev. E. H. Thomas officiating. Burial was in the Russell Lutheran Cemetery on the family lot. (Russell

MARY [MARIA] ELISABETH "MARY" (BANGERT) FLEGLER 1876-1956
Mrs. Jacob Flegler, Sr.--Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Heinrich ,Katherine (Eva Elisabeth] Bangert nee Lackmann
was born June 30, 1876 at Tittel (Dietel), Russia and died at the Russell City Hospital, Sept. 20, 1956. Her age
was 80 years, 20 mos., and 21 days. In early infancy she was baptized and after about 14 years she was confirmed
in the Lutheran faith. She remained a faithful member of her church all her life. In 1892, wrong [Ellis Island
Manifest, July 9, 1892], she came with her parents to America. They settled on a farm about 8 miles south of Russell.
Here she grew to womanhood, and on April 15, 1895 she was united in marriage to Jacob Flegler. There were 10 children
born to this marriage, three of them preceded her in death. Leo at the age of 7 years, Andrew 2 years, and Jacob
Flegler, Jr, who died in April 1954. After living on their farm home for 60 years, where they raised their family,
in the true Christian Spirit, respected by their neighbors and friends. They retired and moved to Russell in Sept.
1951. On Feb 1, 1952 her husband was called home by his Lord and Saviors. She continued her residence at 1116 North
Maple St. in Russell until she became ill on Sept 18, and was taken to the hospital, where she quietly passed away
Friday morning at 8:45 A.M.
She is survived by 7 children; Alex, Andrew and Leslie, Mrs. Caroline Schwartz all of Russell; Mrs Elizabeth
DeWald, Otis, Kansas; Mrs. Maria Runyan, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and
many other relatives.
Services held Sunday, Sept. 23, 1956 at 11.15 a.m. from the Deines Brothers Funeral Home, and final rites at

Sophia Bangeret was a daughter of Johann Heinrich "John Henry" Bangert (1848-1924), and nee Eva Elizabeth
Lackmann (1849-1926). Sopia immigrated to the United States with her parents from Dietel (Oleschna), Russia. Departing
Bremen, Germany, and arriving on July 9, 1892 aboard the "SS Dania" with her siblings, Margaretha "Margaret"
Bangert; Maria Elizabeth "Mary" Bangert, and George Heinrich "George" Bangert. The family settled
in Russell, Russell County, Kansas. Sophia had seven other siblings who died stillborn, or before the age of two
years old in Dietel (Oleschna), Russia. Sophia never married, and died at the age of 31. (by a niece Betty)
FREDRICK "FRED" MICHEL (1870-1945)
Funeral service was held at St. John's Lutheran Church Sunday afternoon for Fredrick Michel who died Thursday
at the Russell Hospital as the result of a stroke which he suffered February 13, 1944. Mr. Michel was 75 years
old. The son of Fredrick Michel and his wife, Sophia (Busch), Mr. Michel was born March 29, 1870 in Dittle, (Dietel),
Russia. He was baptized in infancy and at the age of 14, was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
In 1889 he was united in marriage with Margaret Bangert. To the union were born 12 children, two preceding him
in death. In 1892 [1891] Mr. Michel came to the United States, [with Jacob Flegler, and Jacob Hilderman] settling
on a farm nine miles south of Russell, and where for 45 years he engaged in farming. For a number of years he was
a member of the German Methodist Church of the community. In 1936 he retired from the farm and moved to Russell,
residing on East Third Street. Soon after coming to Russell he became a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, of
which he was a faithful member until his death.
Besides his wife he leaves 10 children who are; Mary Weinmaster(Weimeister), Russell, [KS}; George Michel, Bunker
Hill, [KS]; Fred Michel, Russell; Sophia Strecker, Russell; Henry Michel, Bunker Hill; Peter Michel, Russell; John
Michel, Downs, [KS]; William Michel, Russell; Leo Michel in the armed forces now stationed on New Guinea; Ruben

JACOB FLEGLER, Sr.1870-1952
Jacob Flegler, Sr. the son of Christain David and Maria Elizabeth (Batt) Flegler, was born April 30, 1870, at
Tittel (Dietel), Russia. In early infancy he was baptized and later confirmed. In 1891, he came to America and
spent one year working in Colorado. He then came to Russell County and settled on a farm 8 miles south of Russell.
On April 15, 1895, he was united in marriage to Mary (Maria) Elizabeth Bangert. To this union ten children were
born, two of whom preceded him in death. After being engaged in farming for 60 years, he retired and moved to Russell
in September 1951. He enjoyed good health throughout his lifetime and only a few days prior to his death he became
ill, and quietly passed away at his home in Russell at 4:15 p.m., February 1, 1952. He was a member of the Friedens
Lutheran Church at Bender Hill, where the last rites will be held.
Surviving are; his wife Mary Elizabeth Flegler, eight children; Alex, Jacob, Jr., Andrew, Leslie, Mrs. Caroline
Schwartz and Martha Runyan, all of Russell, Mrs. Elizabeth DeWald, Otis, Kansas; and Mrs. Esther Barnes, Wichita,
Kan. Also 20 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, and many other close relatives and friends. Jacob Flegler

WILBUR (WING) WINGERT
Wilbur (Wing) Wingert, a native of Dalton, Ohio who lived in Santa Clara [California] for the past 19 years, died
Feb 25, [1963] in a San Jose hospital after a brief illness.
Wingert, 57, was a maintenance mechanic for Malani Poultry Co. in Palo Alto the past seven years. Prior to that
he was a maintance mechanic for FMC Corp.
He lived at 1074 Bellomy St., and was a former member of the Santa Clara chapter of Druids.
Survivors include his wife Ohrla B. Wingert, [born Russell, KS], two sons, Wilbur D. Wingert of Boulder Creek,
and Charles R. Wingert of San Jose; a daughter, Betty Carvalho of Byron; a sister, Ruth Merideth of Englewood,
Fla.; and a grandson Jeffery A. Wingert.
Services were held at the Santa Clara Funeral Home, followed by private interment in Santa Clara City Cemetery

JOHANN GEORG "GEORGE" RING 1875-1960
George Ring, 84, of Route Two, Lyman, Died Wednesday at a local hospital. He was born July 31, 1875, at Dittel,
(Dietel) Russia, and came to this country in 1902 to Lincoln. He married Eva Batt Jan. 2, 1904. They moved to Scottsbluff
in 1919, and to Lyman in 1924. He had farmed until his retirement a few years ago. Ring was a member of St James
Lutheran Church of Scottsbluff. Survivors include four sons, Henry and Herman of Lyman, Alex of Morrill, and William
of Torrington; by one daughter, Mrs. John Derr, Jr. of Lyman; by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Eva Ring of Scottsbluff;
by a sister, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Ring) Miller of Scottsbluff; and by 14 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and four children. Services will be held Saturday at 2. p.m at the St. James
Lutheran Church, with the Rev. E. L Wittenburg officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery at Morrill.
A prayer service will be held at 1:30 p.m. before the funeral at the Benson-Coulthard Funeral Home. (Scottsbluff,

EVA ELIZABETH (BATT) RING 1883-1947
Eva Elizabeth Ring, 63, died Monday morning at her home south of Lyman. Funeral services will be held Thursday
at 2 p.m. from St James Lutheran Church in Scottsbluff; brief services will be held at 12:30 p.m., from the Jackson
Mortuary at Morrill. Rev. W. E. Harms will officiate, and burial will be made in Morrill Cemetery. Mrs. Ring was
born in Dittel (Dietel) Russia on May 28, 1883, the daughter of George Batt and Mary Elizabeth Lackman. She came
to the United States, arriving at Lincoln on July 4, 1902. She married George Ring there Jan. 5, 1904. They moved
to Scotts Bluff County in 1915, and to Lyman in 1924, and to Goshen County, Wyoming in 1933 where she resided at
the time of her death.
Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Lydia Derr of Lyman; five sons, Henry, Alex, Bill, and Herman all
at home, and Jacob of Lyman; 10 grandchildren; and sister; Mrs. Katherine Walters of Lincoln; and a brother; George

JACOB FLEGLER, JR. 1902-1954
Jacob the son of Jacob and Mary Elisabeth Flegler, was born March 15, 1902, on a farm about 11 miles south of
Russell, and departed this life on April 17, 1954 at the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City. Age 52
years 1 month and 2 days.
He attended rural school and grew to manhood in the community where he was born. On April 6, 1924 he was united
in marriage to Hanna Deines after which they established their home on a farm east of the home place. There were
three children born to this union all of whom survive. Jake spent his lifetime in Russell, County. Always taking
an active interest in all problems related to his home, his community, church and social life. He was a member
of the Lutheran Church at Bender Hill and served on the Church Council.
For the past two years he has been in poor health and had undergone major surgery about a year ago. Early this
month he entered the Russell Hospital and on April 9 he was taken to Kansas City for further treatment. Another
operation was performed but medical science and tender care were of no avail. He answered his Master's summons
on Saturday evening at 9 o'clock.
To treasure his memory are; his wife, Hannah the three children, Clarence, Mrs. Dora Lee Miller and dean; his
mother, Mrs. Mary Elisabeth Flegler; three Brothers, Alex, Andrew and Leslie, all of Russell. Four sisters, Mrs..
Elisabeth (Wm.) De Wald, Otis; Mrs. Caroline (Jake Schwartz, Russell; Mrs. Esther Barnes, Wichita; and Mrs. Martha
Runyan, Russell. Also one grandchild, Bobby Dean. Casket Bearer; Albert Flegler, Melvin Flegler, Edwin Dietz, Leon

Trinity Bender Hill Lutheran Church, of which she was a member. the Rev. Herman Frerichs officiating. Burial will
be in the church cemetery. A memorial in Mrs. Flegler's name has been established for the Trinity Bender Hill Lutheran
Church Cemetery.
Friends may call until 9 a.m/ Friday at Pohlman's Mortuary, Russell, which is in charge of arrangements.
The body was discovered by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Gertrude Flegler, Rt. 3, Russell, at about 1 p.m. Police
were called at assist when Mrs. Flegler arrived at the home and failed to rouse her mother-in-law. It appeared
that the woman died during the night, possibly of a heart attack. She was in bed and was wearing night cloths.
She was born Dec. 16, 1902, in Russell, County. She married Jacob Flegler Jr. on April 6, 1924, at the Bender
Hill Church. He died April 17, 1954. She was a lifetime resident of this area. She lived on a farm south of Russell
until she moved to town in the mid 1950's.
She is survived by two sons, Clarence and Vernon Dean Flegler, both of rural Russell; a daughter Mrs. Irvin
(Dora Lee) Miller of Newton; a brother Ferdinand Deines of Russell; four sisters, Mrs. Rosa Bangert, Mrs. Ella
Keil and Mrs. Freda Peake, all of Russell, and Mrs. Ida Dietz of Hoisington; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
