Student From Wichita Crowned Miss Kansas

PRATT -- Miss Wichita, Dawn Elaine Holmstrom, a 20-year-old public relations student, was crowned Miss Kansas Saturday night, before more than 1,700 people at the Municipal Auditorium here.

The daughter of Wayne and Inez Holmstrom of Wichita, she is a 1979 graduate of Wichita Heights High School.

Holmstrom attended Wichita State University in 1979 and 1980. She is a stuent at Texas Tech University, majoring in public relations and advertising.

For her talent performance, she sang a medley, including "My Man" and "Happy Days Are Here Again."

Asked why she entered the contest, she said: "For the opportunity to represent Kansas at the Miss America pagent. The scholarships (from previous wins) are terrific and have helped me through my first two years of college."

Dawn was Miss Wichita in 1979 and was first runner-up of the Miss Kansas pageant the same year. She later went on to the National Sweetheart Pageant in Illinois, where she was third runner-up.

The Miss Kansas prize includes a $2,500 scholarship.

The other winners include:

First runner-up: Julia Anne Mayes, 20, Miss Center City/Wichita, from Shawnee.

Second runner-up: Kandyce Lynn Berry, 21, Miss Derby, from Wichita.

Third runner-up: Jodi Lee Mattox, 22, Miss Shawnee, from Kansas City.

Fourth runner-up: Joyce Leanne Saunders, 18, Miss Flint Hills, from Eureka.
