18-year-old killed In Apartment shooting
Her friends want everyone to know that Danielle Weixelbaum's life had just begun.
"She was the most beautiful person," said Desiree Hawkins. "Everything about her was just unbelievable. She was beautiful inside and out."
Hawkins said she was stunned when she learned her friend had been shot to death in her east Wichita apartment early Wednesday by a man who had been dating her mother. A 51-year-old neighbor also was killed when a bullet penetrated his apartment wall.
Police said the shooter, Joshua Glover, 21, committed suicide after wounding two Wichita police officers responding to a disturbance call.
Hawkins said the shooting made Weixelbaum's friends realize how short life can be.
"It's horrible that something like this could happen to somebody so beautiful and so full of life," she said. "She'd just barely turned 18."
Hawkins said friends attending Weixelbaum's funeral on Tuesday would be wearing cherries as a sign of respect to the person they'd come to know as "Dino."
"She was really big into cherries," she said.
Hawkins said she met Glover at a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant where the two worked alongside Weixelbaum's 35-year-old mother.
She said Glover was "an all right guy" who later developed an unhealthy relationship with Weixelbaum's mother.
"He was obsessed with her, but I didn't think it would ever go that far," she said.
When Hawkins learned the name of the shooter, she said, "I was shocked. Completely shocked. I didn't believe it was real.
"It's surreal. It seems like a dream."
When Hawkins visited the apartment Saturday, she said, it became apparent how the shooting unfolded.
"He shot the lock off the door; that's how he got in," she said. "He had to have known going into that apartment with that gun that he was going to kill someone."
Police said Weixelbaum's mother may have been Glover's intended target. Hawkins said she thought Glover's intentions were to hurt Weixelbaum's mother any way that he could. She said Weixelbaum and her three younger sisters were the most important part of their mother's life.
"The girls are the world to her," she said. "For him to take her oldest, he had to have known that that would have hit her in the heart."
The funeral is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Garden Chapel of Watson Funeral Home, 3201 S. Webb Road. (Wichita Eagle, July 23, 2007)
