BARLETT, GLENN FLOYD

March 25, 1908 - July 14, 2007

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Glenn Floyd Barlett, 99, of Coos Bay, at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, July 24, at Holy
Redeemer Catholic Church, 2250 16th St., North Bend. The Rev. Karl Schray will be the celebrant. Burial will be at Ocean View Memory Gardens.

Glenn was born on March 25, 1908, in Omaha, Neb., the son of Frank H. and Cora (Hollen) Barlett. He died July 14, 2007, in Coos Bay.

He was raised and educated in Wichita, Kan. He worked in the aviation industry as a master tool and die machinist, working primarily for Boeing and Cessna, until he retired in 1973. He married Regina Sauer on March 23, 1940, in Wichita. They made their home in Wichita, Grover Beach, Calif.; Shell Knob and Cassville, Mo.; and Coos Bay, where they moved to be near their daughter.

Glen was a pilot and owned several airplanes including, a Cessna, a Luscombe and a Stinson. He built his first boat and later owned a 40-footer. He enjoyed camping, fishing, building miniature combustion engines and going to baseball games with his daughter.

He is survived by his daughter, Betty Ann Scott and husband, Jon of Coos Bay; grandson, Dennis Mitchell White of Cassville, Mo.; granddaughter, Deborah Mae Carter and husband, Rockiey of Nipomo, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brothers, David Barlett, Ray Barlett and Henry Barlett of Wichita; and sister, Marie Dye of Wichita.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Regina, who died May 16, 2007; brother, Frank; and sisters, Wanda, Alta and Grace.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to South Coast Hospice, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay, OR 97420.

BETTS, HAZEL (MRS. FRANK)

Mrs. Hazel Betts, 64, 307 W. Santa Fe., died Tuesday evening in St. Catherine Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born Aug. 31, 1897 in Garden City and has been a resident here all her life.

She was married to Frank E. Betts Dec. 18, 1912 in Wichita. Mrs. Betts was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include the widower; eight daughters, Mrs. Hazel Cecil, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Marguerite Miller and Mrs. Stella Whitlock, both Boise, Ida., Mrs. Kathryn Kahrs and Rose Marie Betts both of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Martha Miller, 1207 N. 3rd, Mrs. Geraldine Earnest, Holcomb, and Mrs. Carol Johnson, 405 N. 2nd; four sons, Jack of Newton, Daryle, Denver, Colo., Ronald, Medford Ore., and Monte of the home; one sister, Mrs. Ruby Long, El Dorado; 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be Saturday, 2 p.m. in the Phillips Chapel. The Rev. Arthur Fleming of the First Christian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery. (Submitted by Lisa Smalley)

MASON, LESLIE R.

ASTORIA - Leslie R. Mason, 85, of Wichita, Kan., formerly of the Astoria area, died at 3:58 a.m. Monday, March 8, 1993, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
Born Nov. 11, 1907, in Streator to Leslie M. and Ethyl Kline Mason, he married Frances S. Shields on Sept. 1, 1935. She died Feb. 12, 1978. He married Alice E. Willis. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, John Mason of Wichita, Keith Mason of Aurora, Colo., and William Willis of Memphis, Tenn.; five daughters, Ona Turner, Helen M. McDonald and Wilberta Burchfield, all of Wichita, Mary Beth Bucher of Oklahoma City and Wilma Moore of Brownsburg, Ind., 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Carolina Bosworth of Grandview, Texas.

He was a retired chemical engineer for Boeing Corp. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Summum Cemetery. The Rev. George L. Harris will officiate. There will be no visitation. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.

RANER, JAMES

James Raner, age 88, died this morning at a lcoal hospital after a long illness. He came from Pratt to Wichita 20 years ago, and was engaged in the furniture business agt 81st and North Main. VEN JOHN, ANNA

Mrs. Anna Ven John, 84, died at her home in Andale, Kansas., Thursday morning. She married Arnold Ven John April 3, 1883, at West Point, Nebraska., and moved to a farm near Andale 45 years ago and had resided in the Andale community since. She was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Christine Steinberger of Wamego, Kan., three sons, John and A. H. of Andale and Casper of Garden City, 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Catholic church at 9 a.m. Saturday with Msgr. J. A. Klug officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's cemetery at Andale. Wulf mortuary of Mt. Hope is in charge.

ALLEY, LILLIAN MAXINE "MICKEY"

WOMAN KILLED IN I-135 CRASH

A Wichita woman was killed and her husband critically injured when their car collided with another Friday evening on I-135, the Canal Route. Both cars were trying to avoid another accident.

The dead woman, who was thrown from the car in which she was riding, was identified as Lillian M. Alley, 58, of 3348 Bellaire. She was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Robert, 57, who was taken to Wesley Medical Center, where he was in critical condition with chest injuries.

The driver of the other car, Cherrie J. Glymph, 27, of 621 N. Grove, was not injured. She was being questioned by the Kansas Highway Patrol late Friday.

DOCKUM, ROBERT B.

Executive of Drug Firm In Wichita Dies at 56

Robert B. Dockum, 56, of 40 Stratford, Eastborough, past president of Dockum Drugs and founder of Rexall Drug Co. Association died Sunday.

A lifetime resident of Wichita, he graduated from Wichita High School and the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy.

He began his career with Dockum Drugs as assistant manager of Dockum Drug Store No. 7. His father, Harry, had founded the Dockum Drug chain in 1900 with a store at 128 N. Main.

When his father died in 1941, Dockum became president of the chain and pioneered a new concept in drug stores with the opening of a drug store-super- market complex at Douglas and Oliver in 1942.

Adams Drug Co., Pawtucket, R.I., bought the chain from Robert Dockum in 1961, when he retired. The Dockum drug store empire, which once owned 10 stores in the Wichita area, has been reduced to three stores.

Dockum was past president of the International Club and a director of the Rexall Drug CO. He had been on board of advisers of Rexall Drug CO., past president of the Association of Rexall Clubs, and past vice president of the Southern Drugstore Association.

In 1954, he founded the Rexall Drug Co. Association and was president of the of the group. He was also a member Chamber of Commerce,Rotary Club, Wichita Country Club, St. James Episcopal Church, and a director of the First National Bank and Boulevard Bank.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Burton Schmidt, Wichita, and Mrs. John Trombold, La Jolla, Calif., and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Dockum Boggs, Houston, Texas.

DOCKUM, VELMA VARNER

Mrs. Velma Varner Dockum, 45, died Wednesday May 30, 1956, afternoon at her home, 40 Stratford Road, after an illness of three years.

She was the wife of Robert B. Dockum, president of the Dockum Rexall Drug Co.

Bom July 1, 1910, in Augusta, she had been a resident of the Wichita area most of her life.

She attended grade school and high school in Augusta and later was a student at the University of Kansas. She was married to Robert B.Dockum in April 1934.

Mrs. Dockum was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, the Junior League of Wichita, Inc., and PEO. She also was a member of Pi Beta Phi, national social sorority, becoming affiliated with the group while attending the University of Kansas.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Judy of the home, and Mrs. John Trombold of Kansas City, Mo., and two brothers, Ralph Varner of Winfield and Cecil Varner of Augusta.

Services for Mrs. Dockum will be held at 2:30 p. m. Friday from, St. James Episcopal Church with the Rev. Daniel Jackson officiating. Pallbearers will be Robert Howse, Kenneth Fitch,John Butts, Granville Tierney, James Klepper, Jack D. Pottenger, and Virgil Browne. Burial will be in Highland Mausoleum.
