GENEVA JUNE ANDERSON, 71, 'DIDN'T WANT TO GIVE UP LIFE'
In 71 years, Geneva June Anderson did everything one could hope to do.
She built a long-lasting marriage, reared two children, worked at a job she enjoyed and served three terms in the
Kansas Legislature.
But Anderson, who died Friday of ovarian cancer, did not get a chance to do two things she wanted. Her son, Tim,
said she wanted to see her grandchildren finish school, and she wanted to vote one last time.
She wanted to see Joan Finney, a close friend, become governor, he said.
''She didn't want to give up life," Tim Anderson said.
His mother, a fan of music, mathematics and politics, had never been one to give up.
She was born Geneva June Stratton in 1918 in Springfield, Mo. Her parents divorced, and she and her mother and
stepfather moved many times. She graduated from Wichita East in 1936 and married Virgil Anderson one year later.
The Andersons reared two sons, Allen and Tim, while both worked full time. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service,
and she was a bank teller.
''She was a full-time housewife and mother as well as holding down a full-time job," Tim Anderson said. "How
she did it, I couldn't tell you. I know I couldn't do it the same way she did."
Anderson retired and ran for the Legislature in 1974. She earned a reputation as an ardent worker, putting extra
effort toward securing turnpike entries in her district, and she became friends with Finney.
Tim Anderson said his mother often sat with Finney's husband, Spencer, at Finney's speaking engagements. Finney
would scan the room for the twosome and say, "Where'd those two run off to now? My husband and his girlfriend.
. . . " Anderson said.
''That was one of their standard jokes," he said.
Finney, who will speak at Anderson's funeral service Monday, was campaigning and could not be reached Saturday.
But Ardena Matlack, of Clearwater, who served in the Legislature with Anderson, recalled her bubbly, hard-working
spirit.
''We would talk about bills and then sing all the rest of the way to Topeka," she said.
Anderson is survived by her husband, two sons and two grandchildren. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday
at the First Baptist Church, 1020 N. 2nd, Mulvane. Senter-Smith Mortuary is handling arrangements.
