From the time John Heersche bought his first
Holstein cow more than 60 years ago, the Mulvane dairyman worked to better the industry for Kansas milk producers.
''He was one of the leaders that brought us from small local co-ops to the marketing organization that we have
today," said Jim Moore, division manager of the Kansas Division of the Associated Milk Producers Inc. "He
has been a very loyal and dedicated member and advocate of cooperative milk marketing."
MR. HEERSCHE, one of the founders of the Wichita Associated Milk Producers Inc. in 1933 and owner of one of the
state's largest registered Holstein dairies, died Friday. He was 78.
Last month, he received an award from the Associated Milk Producers for more than 50 years of "service and
devotion to the principles and practice of cooperative milk marketing in Kansas."
In 1980, he was given the Kansas Distinguished Dairyman award from the Midland United Dairy Industry Association
in cooperation with the Kansas Cooperative Extension Service.
Mr. Heersche helped form the the Wichita Milk Producers Association in 1933. Later he became a board member and
president.
IN 1961, the group consolidated with the producers association in Dodge City and formed the Southwest Milk Producers
Association. Mr. Heersche was the first president of that group, which eventually became the local branch of the
Associated Milk Producers Inc.
His wife, Bobbie, said that each day at 3:45 a.m., Mr. Heersche got up to milk his herd, enjoying classical music
and opera while he worked. The early hour gave him a head start on the nearly four hours of milking in the morning
- and ensured that he'd finish the evening milking at a reasonable hour.
FOR THE past 10 years, he and his son, Don, have operated Heersche Farms in Mulvane. Before that, he and his brother,
George, who is retired, ran the dairy farm, then called Heersche Brothers.
In 1915, when Mr. Heersche was 8, his family moved from Losser, Holland, to Nova Scotia.
In 1919, the family moved to Mulvane, where they rented a farm that had a few Holstein cows.
Mr. Heersche married Melba Louise Meyers in 1939, and they had four children. She died in 1958.
He married Bobbie Rork in May 1965.

LLOYD HILL TOOK THE TIME FOR LOVE
More than just about anything, Lloyd Hill loved his grandchildren and animals.
Mr. Hill died Monday at 87.
Virginia Hill, his daughter-in-law, said that since moving to Mulvane almost 30 years ago to spend more time with
his family, it was common to see him and a few of his grandchildren tucked into a small cart pulled by a pair of
Shetland ponies.
In order to be around animals he had a cabin outside Mulvane, where he kept sheep and goats. His daughter-in-law
described him as a quiet and family oriented man, a loving father and grandfather.
''He took great pride in being able to help his kids and grandchildren," she said.
Born in rural Augusta on Sept. 14, 1900, he moved to Wichita in 1924 when he was hired by The Wichita Eagle. He
retired in 1967 as head of maintenance. Mr. Hill was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and
was a former grand master of the Kansas chapter. He was also a member of the Sovereign Odd Fellows Lodge of the
World.
Soon after he moved to Mulvane, he became an usher at the United Methodist Church, a service he would perform for
almost 30 years.
He also spent a great deal of time helping with the Old Settlers Association, a Mulvane group that sponsors an
annual parade.
