SUMNER COUNTY, KANSAS

OBITS

McEACHERN, NEIL

Neil McEachern was born in Toronto, Canada, April 4, 1858 and after an illness of only a few days passed away at the Wellington hospital, Wellington, Kas., at 8:45 a.m. April 17, 1948, at the age of 90 years and 12 days.

When but a small boy, he moved with his parents to Illinois. The family came to Kansas in 1854 and homesteaded in the Perth community.

Mr. McEachern was united in marriage to Fannie Connor July 17, 1890. Mrs. McEachern preceded him in death Nov. 3, 1927. In 1943, he moved to Wellington and made his home with his children.

Mr. McEachern lived a very active life and took an active interest in all community affairs; was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand where it was needed. He helped build the Presbyterian church in the Perth community, and himself became a member of the church. For years he hauled freight between Wichita and points in Oklahoma. Truly a pioneer in the early days of Kansas and Oklahoma.

On April 4, he celebrated his 90th birthday in the midst of his children and grand children and thoroughly enjoyed the day. His friends also made him happy with their shower of greetings. Among the greeting cards was one from Governor Carlson.

Neil McEachern leaves to mourn his death his sons, William Alameda, Calif.; Leroy, Hugh, John, Jesse, and Eugene, all of Wellington and Lewis, El Dorado; three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Kingsley, Conway Springs, Mrs. Marie Kern, Wichita, Mrs. Fannie Kern, Perth; one brother, Allen, Twin Falls, Idaho; one sister, Mrs. Katie Patton, Wellington, 40 grandchildren (three grandsons gave their lives in the last war), 15 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. McEACHERN, FANNIE ELIZABETH

Mrs. Fannie Elizabeth McEachern

9 November 1927

McEachern - Mrs. Fannie Elizabeth McEachern, wife of Neil McEachern, a resident of the Perth vicinity for many years and whose family has long been one of the most prominent of that locality, died very suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bessie Kingsley, southeast of that place last Thursday evening. The circumstances of her death were unusual. She had gone with her husband to celebrate her fifty-ninth birthday at the daughter's home and after spending a pleasant evening they had begun preparations to return. While putting her on wraps Mrs. McEachern was seized with attack of cerebral hemorrhage and fell to the floor. She was assisted to a couch and a Wellington physician called, but she passed away about 9:30 o'clock a few minutes after his arrival. Mrs. McEachern had not been well for some months and had been taking treatment during that time, but her condition was not considered serious and her sudden death came as a great shock to her family and friends.

Mrs. McEachern was born (Connor) in Table Rock, McLean County, Illinois, November 8, 1868. She came with her husband to the vicinity of Perth in the early 80s and has since resided in that locality where a large family of children grew up in their farm home. Besides the husband Mrs. McEachern is survived by seven sons, W.M., Roy, Hugh, John, Jess, Eugene and Louis, all of Perth; and three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Kingsley, Mrs. Marie Kern and Mrs. Fannie Kern, all of the Perth vicinity. She leaves also two brothers, Louis Connor, of Cushing, Oklahoma, and Grant Connor whose present address is not known, and three sisters, Mrs. Dora Wickery, Glendale, and Mrs. Mary Stone, Los Angeles, California, and Mrs. Mima Vliet of Table Grove, Illinois. Also by twenty-two grandchildren.

The funeral services took place on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Presbyterian church at Perth, of which she had been a faithful member for many years, the services being conducted by Rev. C.H. Myers, of Braman. Interment was made in the Bethany cemetery at Perth.

This was in a Sumner County Newspaper but I do not know the name. I left spelling and punctuation as they were in the original notice as much as possible. Submitted by Pam McEachern October 2010

And perfect love is o'er them all
Though far above our sight.
Beloved, "It is well !"
Though deep and sore the smart,
The hand that wounds knows how to bind
And heal the broken heart.
Beloved, "It is well !"
Though sorrow clouds our way,
'Twill only make the joy more dear
That ushers in the day.
Beloved, 'It is well !"
The path that Jesus trod,
Though rough and straight and dark it be.
Leads home to Heaven and God.

CARD OF THANKS

He leaves to mourn his loss, his mother and father, three sisters, Frances, Margaret and Dorothy and one brother, John, and a host of relatives and friends.

Little Gene
I came and looked upon his face-
But didn't weep.
His placid features looked so like
A babe asleep!
Just like, before I'd seen him in-
His cradle bed.
But when I touched his brow, I
knew
That he was dead.
How oft He's answered back your
kiss
With laughing eyes.
And you have said: "He's worth in
gold;
His weight and size."
And if t'were not that through
your tears-
You hear him say "Come little
one"
Your lives would be
So dread today
