BLAKELY, JOHN

WAKEENY, KAS. July 27 - John Blakely, an old settler of Trego County, shot by Frank O'Neil, an implement salesman of Wakeeny, Sunday, died at 7 o'clock this morning. O'Neil is reported to have been drinking heavily for a week. Screams were heard coming from the O'Neil home in the outskirts of Wakeeny Sunday and Mr. Blakely and J. C. Milholland went to investigate. They found O'Neil threatening his wife with a revolver. Blakely rushed in and attempted to disarm O'Neil when the shooting took place. Blakely received two shots in the left side and O'Neil shot himself through the arm.

Deputy Sheriff Hillman arrested O'Neil near the house, where he was trying to hide in a corn field. Frank O'Neil is a brother of Edwin O'Neil an attorney of Topeka. Blakely was a retired farmer and his sons are farmers and business men of this county. (Kansas City Star, July 27, 1914, page 4)

HARDY, FRANK

Leavenworth, Dec. 26 - Frank Hardy, 60 years old, an Austrian, inmate of the state prison, was killed within the walls of the prison at 11:30 o'clock this morning when a bale of sisal fell on him, knocking him from a wagon. The wagon passed over his body and he died on the way to the prison hospital.

Hardy who had no known relatives in this country, was received at the prison December 19 this year. He was convicted in Trego County for selling mortgaged property and sentenced to serve from one to five years. (Kansas City Star, December 26, 1919, page 2)
