William P. Gatlin
John B. England was one of the most thrifty and enterprising farmers of Calloway County. He was born in Cumberland County, Va, July 30 1823. He was the fourth of a family of six children of John and Mary B. England, who settled in Calloway County in 1839, migrating from Virginia. John England the father of John B. England was born in 1786, in Hanover County,Va, where he grew to man hood. He served as a soldier in the war of 1812, at the close of which he married Miss Mary B. Cayce, who was born in Virginia in 1792. She lived to the advanced age of eighty-two years, and died in Calloway County, her husband having died two years subsequent to their settlement in Calloway County. They were both advocates of pioneer Methodism, in the faith of which they trustingly died. John B. England received a common school education in Virginia, and assiduously devoted his life to the pursuits of agriculture, in which he has been quite successful. He had own near Murray a tract of land consisting of 500 acres. In political faith Mr England is a Republican, and has been repeatedly called to fill positions of public trust. In 1851 he was elected to the office of county assessor, serving one term, in 1862 he was elected to the office of county clerk of Calloway County, serving four years, was assessor of internal revence from 1867 to 1869, and for several years has served as United States commissioner for the Sixth District of Kentucky. Mr England has been twice married, first to Mrs. Lizzie Smothermen formerly Bramlett, of Memphis, Tennessee, she died in May 1871, leaving two children, Etna C. England and Bernard B. England. The second wife was Susan M. Graham, the daughter of Dr John B. Graham, of Calloway County. She died in September 1883,the mother of two children, Kenton B. England and John G. England. Mr England was a worthy member of the Masonic order, I. O. O. F. , and of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
