ANDREW JACKSON HOLLAND

Is the son of Daniel Holland, a physician and native of Robertson County, Tennessee. Where Andrew was born 22-Feb-1830. The father died in 1852 and his widow, Rebecca (Skinner) Holland  died two years later. Andrew was reared on the farm of his father, and attended district school. He remained at home until of age, when he came to Murray and further prosecuted his studies, his father having in the meantime moved to the eastern part of the county. After attending school one year, he taught one for the same period of time, and then engaged in the mercantile trade at Flint Springs, this county, continning there four years,selling out he purchased a dry goods store in Murray, and was in the business two years,being burnt out in 1861. He was later engaged in the dry goods trade in Murray from 1865 to 1868, and has been largely identified with the tobacco business both here and in Grenn County adjoining, and was burnt out for a second time while engaged in the manufacture of plug tobacco ub the latter county. He was also in the milling business, owning a half interest in the Murray Mills. 25-Oct-1856 he married Elizabeth Pitt of Murray, she died in 1865, and he was subsequently married to Ellen Curran. Mr Holland was a menber of the Masonic order, and of the Missionary Baptist Church, also a member of the Knights of Honor, and gives his support to the prohibition cause.
