COURIER JOURNAL OBITUARY – 08/15/1985
Frank E. Haddad Sr., GOP leader, dies at 78
. Longtime Republican leader Frank E. Haddad Sr. died yesterday at his home. He was 78. Haddad, patriarch of one
of Louisville’s most respected Lebanese-American families was a native of Hammana, Lebanon. During his long career,
he was city director of building and housing during the administration of Republican Mayors William O. Cowger and
Kenneth Schmied. He served as Jefferson County’s building and housing director as well. Cowger named the colorful
and outspoken Haddad to the city post in 1961. After the 1969 elections, in which the Republicans lost control
of both City Hall and the County Courthouse, he was named to the county post before the Democratic administration
of County Judge Todd Hollenbach took office. Hollenbach kept Haddad on the job for three years, and when he finally
resigned, in 1972, it was his own decision. “There was no coercion,” he said at the time. “They (the Democrats)
treated me like a favorite son.” “I was the last of the Republicans, kind of like the last of the Mohegans,” he
said. “Every party has an advance man, but you need a damn good retreat man, too.” In 1968, during Haddad’s years
in the City Hall job, his then 7-year-old grandson, Bruce Haddad, threatened to challenge Democratic Aldermanic
President James E. Thornberry to a duel because of remarks uttered about the elder Haddad in a political debate.
Haddad talked the lad out of it, saying Thornberry “is like any other boss. He and the Democrats (on the Board
of Aldermen) have given us more money than we ever got from the Republican board. He’s the man who pays the money
and he wants us to do a good job.” Besides, he told the boy, all Kentucky officials must take an oath not to fight
duels. Haddad was a member of Daylight Masonic Lodge 760, Scottish Rite, Kosair Shrine, Second Presbyterian Church
and the Lebanese-American Country Club. Survivors include his wife, the former Clara Gallo; two sons, Frank E.

. John Feighan, 84, of Trinity Towers, died there Aug. 30. He was a retired employee of the old Louisville &
Nashville Railroad Co. Funeral: 8 p.m. Wednesday, McDaniel Funeral Home, 4339 Park Blvd., with private burial.
Visitation after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
If You Didn’t Know Johnny Feighan, You Missed Knowing a Darn Nice Guy
. One by one, often in tears, the mourners at McDaniel Funeral Home stood up to say how much they were going to
miss Johnny Feighan. Most of them were not used to public speaking. What they had to say was rough and halting,
but it came from the heart, because that’s where Johnny Feighan had touched them. Feighan, 84, had been known forever
around the Beechmont and Highland Park areas as “Johnny Finn,” partly because that’s how his name sounded, partly
because Feighan didn’t bother to correct them. He was the stuff of neighborhood legends, the man who always wore
a hat, coat and tie even in the worst days of August, the man whose life will always define a time and place in
blue-collar South Louisville. That is why, although Johnny Feighan died in his Trinity Towers apartment without
immediate survivors, he had a family of more than 140 people at the funeral home at 4339 Park Blvd. on Wednesday
night. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” said one of the mourners. “If all of Johnny’s friends could be here,
we’d have 10 times this many.” Many people carried pictures of Feighan, pictures of a short, stocky, white-haired
Irishman often surrounded by other people’s children – children who grew up to remember. “He would gather up all
the children in the neighborhood and tell stories, said one who was there. “Then he would take us over to Duckys,
the neighborhood hangout, for hamburgers and ice cream.” Feighan worked 20 years for the L&N Railroad, hauling
parts around the big South Louisville yards in his three-wheeled bike. He also worked for the old Louisville Parks
Department, mostly telling stories to kids. He led them on long walks from South Louisville to Iroquois or Shawnee
parks, teaching them about the birds and flowers as he went – walks that few adults would allow today. He walked
the streets of Highland Park playing a harmonica, and gave the instruments away by the dozens. He carved canes
and walking sticks from tree limbs and gave them away – canes that many of the mourners still cherish. He often
wore a magnifying glass around his neck, the better to examine nature’s exquisite details. Feighan was a bachelor
who outlived his mother and three sisters. He was a self-educated, well-traveled man with an excellent collection
of classical music. He wrote hundreds of thoughtful poems and wondering essays. He was a student of religion, cultures
and, in his case, the rare medical malady. “If the doctor told him he had a certain ailment, John would go home
and study it,” a mourner said. “Then he’d go back, and the doctor would say, “John, you’ve been reading again.”
Feighan never made much money; he had his Social Security and a modest railroad pension. He never owned a car,
established a checking account or used a credit card. He paid cash, and most of that went for other people. He
bought eyeglasses for old people, and even dentures. He bought medicine for widows who had young children. He fed
street people. He bought Scout uniforms and baseball equipment. He bought ballet tickets. He counseled the sick
and their families. He offered advice but never judgment. He lived to give. “Johnny,” said a mourner, “was the
nearest thing to a saint I’ll ever know.” A young woman who grew up in Highland Park stood and cried as she said
the only Christmas presents the seven children in her family knew were the ones Johnny Feighan brought. A girl,
now 16, said Feighan paid for six years of her private schooling because she had difficulties in public school.
One at a time they stood up, each trying to explain what he or she had lost, what a special man Feighan had been.
Finally, a priest led them in prayer, and the room was hushed, and a certainty hung heavy in the chapel that Johnny
Feighan had gone to a better place.
