SLAVERY in Lyon County
Submitted by Jo Ann Scott
The slave business was another thriving industry during the period. The most prominent
slave dealing establishment of that time was Hillman Brothers. In the old slave book found among the records were
listed the name of the slave (usually first names only), age, sex, and short description. Usually these slaves
assumed the names of their master. The first entry in the slave book is to Hillman Brothers and simply states:
Spencer (a yellow boy) age 30, male.
