Perry county was orginally founded by Elijah Combs and his seven brothers in 1790, the county and its seat were later named for American naval hero Commodore Oliver-Hazard Perry. Commodore Perry was victorious over the British in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. Perry County was formed from Clay and Floyd Counties. It was created on 2 Nov 1820.
