COMMENCEMENT DAYS

Commencement time! It's the time of flowers, singing birds, and special picnics. There were many lovely events to provide treasured memories – the early morning breakfast, the class play and reception, and baccalaureate services with Rev. John Weir, pastor of Mayo Methodist Church in Paintsville, Kentucky, as speaker. His message will be a good treasure on which to draw to enrich the years ahead of Bethany's four graduating eighth grade members, namely, Mildred Ritchie, Janice Wilson, John Little and Bill Little.

May 20, Friday, at 1:00 p.m., as the four graduates, speaker and faculty ascended to the platform, the hearts of those assembled in Bethany's chapel welled with thankfulness to our heavenly Father for this service, another milestone so abundantly achieved through God's tender and thorough care. Throughout the carefully planned program Bethany was justifiably proud of her participating family. We humbly thank God for Rev. Stanley R. Patterson, Vice-President of the Bethany Board of Trustees, and pastor in Cincinnati. His commencement address was freighted with the Lord's blessing.

We were made grateful for the achievements represented in the form of diploma and awards, as they were presented by Miss Burt, Superintendent. The diplomas were presented to the four graduates and the scholarship awards were presented to the following children: First Grade – Linda Dalton; Second grade- Logan Pence; Bible achievement – Chalmer Risener; middle grades – Carol Banks, Mildred Pence, and June Miller; Bible achievement: June Miller; upper grades – Bill Little; Bible achievement: Louise Dalton.

We were happy for each of the guests and friends present. The activities were especially enriched through the presence of the Board of Trustees, Dr. James Deweerd, eminent pastor of Cadle Tabernacle, Indianapolis.

To the graduates we would say with the poet:

“Go, young heart, and wing thy flight from star to star,

From world to luminous world as far

As sun doth shine her flaming wall; Take all the pleasures of all the spheres, And multiply them with endless years;

One moment in God's service is worth them all.”

NEW GLANCES

---------

To our many friends who have not had the privilege of visiting the grounds of Bethany Orphanage, we offer this article to give you a mental picture of what you might see were you to be one of the hundreds that visit Bethany. We are always happy to have visitors and it always gives us a natural inward sensation of delight when someone notices some change that might have taken place. This helps us as workers to realize that we are making some progress, though we may often question just how much.

Telephones: Readers will recall that a few months ago we mentioned the urgency of some means of communication between our buildings for the sake of emergencies as well as for the multiplied steps that could be saved. We are happy to report that we now have a private telephone system installed. This has been made possible by the untiring efforts of Mr. R.B. Stone of Lexington, Kentucky. Having retired a few months ago with better than forty years of telephone experience, we found Mr. Stone well capable to undertake the task. Through his numerous connections and the generosity of his many friends, practically all of the needed materials and equipment were secured with little or o cost. The completed job will call for 18 or 20 telephones spotted in the various buildings of the Home. Already miles of walking have been saved as Bethany workers have been able to go to the phones now in use and call about the numerous items of business.

Goats:

If space permitted in this issue we would have included a snapshot of a very interesting scene of a few weeks ago when the Bethany truck came in from Covington, Kentucky, with a number of

REPORT ON MISS BURT

--------------

Many inquiries are received in regard to the physical condition of our superintendent and founder, Miss Marjorie Burt.

As this issue goes to press, Miss Burt is in Good Samaritan Hospital at Lexington, Kentucky. She has again undergone surgery, but the doctor's report is very satisfactory. Feeling that she has perhaps heretofore been up and around a little too quickly, he plans to hold her in the hospital a while longer. We thank God for the way that He has helped here through these times of suffering and we marvel at the patience and faith that she has exhibited. We hope for here a speedy recovery and she like-wise hopes to be able to continue on with her summer schedule soon.

Miss Cora Jewell, our faithful nurse at Bethany hospital for over twenty years, will be entering the Good Samaritan Hospital on July 5th for surgery. She will undergo orthopedic surgery which will necessitate her being off her feet for several weeks. We are very glad that the Lord has sent us a nurse at this time to help with her many duties and responsibilities here. We also hope for Miss Jewell a very speedy recovery.

BETHANY MEMBER LEAVES FOR AFRICA

-------

A few days ago a large wrecker truck came in and circled around the buildings of Bethany Orphanage to have its part in the sending out of what had been a faithful member of Bethany Orphanage.

Since the installation of electric power lines to Bethany a few years ago, there was little use for the big Dieselelectric plant that was still here. So it was our privilege and delight to start it on its way to the foreign field of Africa where it will once again be put to use in the Lord's work. The plant was given to the World Gospel Mission to be used in Africa. It is our hope that as it once again produces light it will have its part in dispelling the spiritual darkness of the mission field.
